View Full Version : Rudy Gobert...Next Dikembe Mutombo?

Dike had a good 25+ lbs on Rudy, but I think they have similar games.

Half mobile trees who can rack up blocks and rebound with the best of them. Can't play a lick of offense but are at least big bodies who can set screens and finish layups/dunks/alley-oops.

Is there a better comparison for Gobert?

Rudy will develop into a good offensive player. Dikembe was effective at that end but it was ugly. Rudy's a good passer already too.

Gobert has a lot of potential and an elite wingspan that will give him enough second chances to prove himself. He's getting better constantly and will be a force.

Gobert is already dominant on the defensive end, you can see the frustration of players trying to score with him in the paint, he is an incredible combination of long and athletic and the scary thing is he probably still has a lot of improvement left in him.

On the offensive end, he will inevitably get plenty of putbacks and alley oops, but he has already shown the ability to make a move, for example his nifty little euro step, and he is a good free throw shooter. And he really is a surprisingly good passer.

In summary, he will one day be seen as the greatest to ever lace them up.

Thank you.

Gobert seems naturally athletic unlike Deke who moves pretty akward.

Imagine when the dude adds some bulk in his frame and gets stronger. Dude is gonna be soooo dominant.

I don't see Gobert ever being as good as Mutombo. He has time to have more offense, but Mutombo was a defensive beast his entire career.

Random note...

Dikembe put up 20/15 the first month of his career....18/13 the second...18/12 the third...17 and 12 the 4th...

Then he scored 10ppg the last month of the season and only put up 17ppg in one month of the next 17 seasons.

Scoring just vanished.

And Gobert, as a sophomore atm, is probably a top 5 defensive Center in the league. Dude is like 22. I could see him reaching Deke defensively, and will most likely be a better offensive player when its all said and done.

Good as in Tyson Chandler good? Because he won't ever be a real post player probably.

I just don't see Gobert becoming a guy that blocks over 4 shots per game, 4 DPOY awards, or is a key part of 2 runs to the Finals. He may be able to reach Mutombo's peak of rebounding (14), but not the consistency (11 straight years of 10+ rebounds). That is not to say that Gobert won't be a very good defender, I just think Mutombo is one of the all time greats on the defensive side.

Gobert I think can do a lot of the things Hibbert does. Affecting shots with verticality, offensively he's got more skill than the just hard roll guys have, but he's also not very good at that specific hard roll skill yet, and will never be great at it.

And like Hibbert, he can be a legit post player as a third option on a good team. The problem is finding a team who'll play like that. And Utah may be that team.

Gobert does have a good nickname I just heard last night. The Stifle Tower!

Westhead's ridiculous offense vanished.

I think he will. They're starting to run the pick and roll with him. He's working on a hook shot. Hitting 3's in practice. He's works hard. See him improve from game to game. He's highly skilled just raw. He's another guy that was a guard before a huge growth spurt

Gobert is going to make himself some serious bank in the next few years. I wouldn't be suprised if a team throws him the max.

Jazz will be signing him to the 5 year max. He's the best thing that's happened to them since Stockton/Malone ended up in their laps.

Getting the best non big defender was pretty good, also.

Despite some of the stuff you say that I don't agree with I respect how hard you have rooted for him the past 7 years

Going for #4 now. 15 boards a game. Going for 7th straight 10 + rebound season

15 years ago the jazz made the conference finals under boozer and williams. Have yet to see them make it there again.

they made the finals because 8th seed GS beat 1 seed Dallas. Those Utah teams weren't as good. And again for the trolls. Basketball is a team sport

At least they never blew a 3-1 series lead during that time lmao.

Mutombo was the better playoffs and "finals" performer. Gobert is a poor man's Mutombo.

Dikembe was effective at that end but it was ugly. The ugliest.
His adidas were also befittingly ugly.

That's a good comparison, actually. The only difference is that Mutombo played in an era with far fewer 3s, and his rim protection closer to the basket was much more impactful than Gobert's.

If he played today, Mutombo would be doing the "Thriller" just like Gobert when the time came to defend 3 point shots...
