For the sarcasm-challenged, he was kidding. Popovich is of course delighted for his longtime friends, who currently are on top in their respective conferences -- playing the way Popovich's Spurs have for 18 years. It is the way the Spurs hope to play again this season, in enough time to have some say about capturing a back-to-back championship, the only remaining accomplishment unearned during the Tim Duncan Era.

The Spurs have been under the radar most of this season, barely hanging on to a playoff spot in the West while waiting for key players to return. They've made uncharacteristic mistakes at the ends of games, and they've got the usual Western Conference gantlet to traverse.

Its the truth though. Spurs playbook would not work with the warriors because warriors guards dominate the ball and they dont have a lot of scoring bigs in the post and the hawks are vice versa

The Hawks use Triangle system too and no it's not exactly the same has Pop. The Hawks play to their strengths, just like the Warriors do. They have different players.

The "system" is getting talented players to buy into the team concept.

It has a lot less to do with x's and o's IMO than most people think. It's just the fact that there are still teams out there trying to win games with an iso chucker playing hero ball that it looks very lopsided when you have a few teams playing smarter than that and racking up wins, but the truth is it's not some elaborate scheme of plays. Some teams have returned to a more effective variety of team ball, many teams still allow their "stars" to go out and play hero ball 1 on 1. Those squads are making the team ball squads look really good right now.

Is it really surprising? The system gets the best out of its role players. This differs from say, Phil Jackson's triangle, which if eventually learned, gets the best out of stars, and if those stars aren't clear cut HOF players, the system will fail.

Lest we forget, Bud is the one who pushed Pop into changing his entire basketball philosophy.

Also, is Kerr really a Pop guy? He played for Pop when he was an all-out defensive coach, and Kerr hasn't really done much with Golden State's defense (because it was so good last year)? I think Pop's influence on Kerr was showing him how to trust his staff and players. Kerr will probably admit that a lot of specifics are left to his assistants (which is how it should be when you're a rookie coach and your assistants are some of the best in the league).

A match up with The Spurs and The Warriors are easily the two most compelling games left in the season at this point. The Hawks have come dangerously close to knocking off the Spurs the last two meetings. It basically took two game winners.

It would be an interesting series.

I don't need data. You're over here talkin about the regular season, not the playoffs, the regular season. The Hawks might be a better regular season team than the spurs so far this year. That doesn't concern me in the slightest. The Spurs have been dealing with multiple injuries all year and have pretty much been playing at 50%.

Hawks are for real, but blaming officiating for the loss without clear examples of it is pretty weak.

Our perimeter defense would simply be too much for the Hawks. Once teams seriously start gameplanning for them (ie in a Playoff series), the fluid offense and collective defense will be exposed (not in a way that it won't work, but there will be long stretches of it). You're just really lucky that you'll have a bye in rd 1 (unless you meet the Pistons).

You guys are still missing that Tim Duncan player, a guy you can give the ball to and get a bucket or a FT with. Horford and Korver can't create their own shots well enough, and the best opposing wing defender will be put on Teague. That leaves Milsap. A very good player, but he's not that good.

If one of your top 4 players (Korver, Teague, Milsap, Horford) goes cold for a series, it could be disastrous. Your role players are good, but I can tell you know that Bud isn't giving them much burn when things get real serious.
