View Full Version : The Pelicans back-court... on paper.

I realize basketball isn't played on paper, but when I look at the Pelicans back-court rotation, I feel like these guys could be an elite combo.

Eric Gordon is 26 years old. A couple years ago, Gordon was averaging 20/3/3 on this same team. In his final year with the Clippers, most people ranked him as a top 5 SG in the league.

Tyreke Evans is 25 years old. He's a former rookie of the year that averaged 20/5/6 for a season, with career averages of 17/5/5 on 45%. He still can't shoot, but he does a lot of little things on the court.

Jrue Holiday is 24 years old. His last year with Philly he was an All-Star. This season he's averaging 15/4/7 while playing solid defense. Jrue's isn't the kind of guy who can take over a game, but he's become much better at being a game manager.

Now, like I said, I know basketball games aren't played on paper... but we're also not talking about a bunch of veterans either. These guys should just now be entering their primes, and all of them have performed, at one time or another, at an elite level. I think Eric Gordon is the biggest enigma to me. I watched almost every game this guy played with the Clippers, and I thought he was gonna be a great piece to a championship squad. He played solid defense, could shoot the 3 ball, had decent vision, and played fantastic off-the-ball.

Now you need to watch a pels game or 3, and tell us your thoughts on them NOW.

Since Gordon has hardly played for 3 seasons.
Evans was figured out after season 1.
And Jrue is on his way to mirroring Gordon.

Good backcourt on paper in 2011 maybe.

Woeful now.

They need a better coach. Their players are not that bad

This is what I'm thinking. I also think they're a victim of a historically stacked conference... and injuries.

Evans can be good but I really think he should be a full time point guard. This guy NEEDS the ball in his hands.

the problem with the Pel's backcourt is that they don't know how to bring the ball to AD on his sweet spots.

Tyreke Evans is averaging 17.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.2 steals with a 16.4 PER. His problem is that he hasn't been efficient at all. He has a 49.5 TS% this year, despite being way more efficient on a lottery-bound Kings.

Eric Gordon has had a career-worst year with 11.8 points, 3.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.0 steals on 52.3 TS% with a 11.0 PER. A couple years ago, he was a scorer that was averaging 22.6 points on 56.6 TS% with an 18.5 PER. Injuries ruined his bright future and now he's arguably not even a starting-caliber shooting.

Jrue Holiday is the best player out of all three, averaging 15.2 points, 7.1 assists, and 1.6 steals on 51.9 TS% with a 18.6 PER. The problem isn't just with the fact he's not efficient. The problem is that the point guard position is so deep, he can't match up. There's Curry, Lillard, Wall, Lowry, Paul, Westbrook, Teague, Irving, Conley, and Rose all playing extremely well. Then, there's Rondo, Lawson, Parker, Dragic, Bledsoe, Thomas, Walker, Hill, and Jennings. When there are so many good point guards, it's impossible to match up, especially with most of these players still young and full of potential.

So if we had these players all at their peak, this would be potentially an elite backcourt. Unfortunately, these players have all regressed.

Shouldn't their front court be elite? Asik/Davis/Anderson?

Something is amiss in NO

Law of diminishing returns. Holiday and Evans both need the ball to be effective, but the ball should be run through Anthony Davis. Eric Gordon just plain sucks because he's never healthy.

Exactly, put them in a system like the Hawks with a healthy Holiday and they look better. This team has talent.
