like... ooh, how nice! so now that we're pretty much screwed and our options limited in a variety of pragmatic, scientific and economic ways... NOW's the time to finally admit that you're a bunch of self-interested blowhards? now's the time to come on board? really...??

but hey-- doesn't that mean that neocons and various other dimwits get to say-- "these republican d-bags in congress are total flip-floppers??"

because no person of integrity and decency ever changed their mind upon a subject, amirite...?

nope, because the amendment is poorly worded, it allowed someone like Inhofe to say "the climate is changing and it has always changed". There is no reference in that amendment to anthropogenic activities causing climate change.

There was another vote that said they don't think mankind causes it.

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jan/22/us-senate-man-climate-change-global-warming-hoax

The Senate voted virtually unanimously that climate change is occurring and not, as some Republicans have said, a hoax – but it defeated two measures attributing its causes to human activity.

Only one Senator, Roger Wicker, a Republican from Mississippi, voted against a resolution declaring climate change was real and not – as his fellow Republican, Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma once famous declared – a hoax. That measure passed 98 to one.

But the Senate voted down two measures that attributed climate change to human activity – and that is far more important.

Unless Senators are prepared to acknowledge the causes of climate change, it is likely they will remain unable and unwilling to do anything about it.

wait the Senate is voting about whether climate change exists or not?

As if its somehow decided by senate vote??

Lol wtf. I mean i understand what theyre getting at but it just sounds hilarious that theyre voting on whether something is scientifically true or not. As tho its up to the Senate to decide.

Republicans are too slow to realize that making money off global warming is for real. Al Gore and his pals are three steps away already.

And Democrats already had their hands on solar energy businesses.

It's ironic that these guys control a good amount of the country's financial interests when they can't even invest in solar energy :lol

Many politicians have been denying it exists for a long, long time. So, yes, this is something new. Would something like this pass in the current House of Representatives?

2014
The House Energy and Commerce Committee Tuesday voted down an amendment that would have stated conclusively that climate change is occurring.

2011
House Repubs Vote That Earth Is Not Warming
All Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted against an amendment that states that global warming exists, regardless of cause.

They also wanted to stop funding study of it.
2011
Last night the U.S. House of Representatives agreed to cut off funding for the rest of 2011 for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

In 2014:

87% of the political contributions of the oil and gas industry went to Republicans.

96% of the political contributions of the coal industry went to Republicans.

I would say the Republicans are making more money off global warming than their opponents.

Mitt Romney has just created a distinction between him and the other 2016 GOP candidates (http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/230398-romney-im-one-of-those-republicans-who-believes-in-climate-change)
Stoking the fires for a possible third presidential run, Mitt Romney split with the majority of Republicans and said he believes humans contribute to climate change.

Might as well. If it doesnt work this time he can always give a different opinion next election.

He'll never survive the primaries with that opinion.

The republican base may be in general on the side of downplaying global warming, but I dont think its exactly a priority issue. Hes still likely going to tow the republican line on abortion and gay murriage. If people think he has the best shot to beat the Dem candidate theyll vote for him.

Incorrect.

Huntsman easily would have had the best chance in the actual election in 2012, because he wasn't too extreme.

He didn't survive the primary because he wasn't extreme Right enough.

On which issues?

I'm talking about Romney specifically. If Republicans think he can unseat the Dems, I doubt they thumb their noses at him over his current stance on climate change.

Last election, anyone who wasn't anti-abortion, anti-tax, pro-military, anti-immigrant, anti-climate change, anti-gay marriage, didn't stand a chance in the primaries.

I don't think that has changed much, but the Republican primary voters could surprise me I suppose.

Well fundamentalists bitched about Mittens in the primaries last election just like they did with McCain before him. Obviously moderate Republicans are winning in the primaries. So I doubt takin a moderate view on climate change is going to have much impact. Besides I'm sure his team did plenty of polling and research before making his position official :lol.

awesome factoid, thank you.

i'm not sure exxon secrets (http://www.exxonsecrets.org/maps.php) is being updated anymore, but it's a great way to see how the money flows from the energy industry in to the pockets of their lackeys... whose jobs are essentially to snow the public on various science issues in the form of 'think tanks' and such.
