Leaning towards the Civic, looks like it has the best value. I'm looking for decent gas mileage and low maintenance costs, something to commute with. Thoughts?

Good choices there, I'm torn between the Civic and the Corolla. My brother in law has that exact 04 Civic and has put over 300,000 miles on it with no unexpected issues. I like the rims and color of the Corolla more though. That 04 Civic silver paint peels pretty bad from what I've seen to (not that car, my brother in law's)

The Mazdas are pretty nice, tons of devolpment over the years... parts are cheaper AND readily available due to so many being shared with ford products

Mazda 6 is the same platform as the Ford Fusion, Edge, a couple of Lincoln's and another Mazda, was still in production until 2013 so there's a ton of parts and a ton of crossover.. basically the same base in production for about 10 years

Also, what's the mileage on it? I know the performance is probably the best out of all of these but the mileage is keeping me on the fence about it.

Audi A6 from 2005 is several tiers above in terms of comfort and style, performance wise is not as fun as the beamer but its also fuel efficient and 10 times better looking that all of crap the OP posted

I don't think he wants to spend that much on maintenance even a well kept one of those is expensive to keep up

My Vanos just went out on the M5... I'm going to fix it myself (I did it on the M3 5 years ago, it' actually very easy) but the price of the parts alone are off the hook.. Just for fun I called the stealership to see what they charge to rebuild the Vanos and got a $4500-$6000 estimate :wtf:

Would like some more thoughts before I decide, appreciate what I have gotten so far other than fiddy. Some better reasons for which car is best would be great

i just bought my wife a near new 2012 mazda 6 for dirt cheap. She loves it. It's a decent economical ride that is fun to drive hard.

I'd stay away from the jetta. Maintenance on those things is stupid expensive. INB4 "do it yourself", because most people never get around to doing it. Be realistic. Maintenance on japanese cars is way cheaper. The perks of a german car over a japanese car aren't worth it especially in a jetta.

The mazda is more car than the civic or corolla. More power, and probably more spacious.

I'm a huge nissan guy, I drive an altima but i'm a huge huge maxima fan. I've always wanted one but can't really justify one. That v6 is a sweetheart of an engine and out of all the cars you posted the maxima would by far be the most fun to drive. Only 1 mile? I didn't read the description too much. Make sure the title is clean.

what is ugly about the 05 accord ? .. I guess the basic model with nothing and 'hubcaps' looks like shit but the ex looks alright .. had the 05 in satin silver with black leather, blacked out tints and alloy rims when it came out .. always got a good response with that car ..

that white audi looks nice though .. not bad for 6k+(depending on mileage .. I don't see mileage there)

The Mazda's look significantly better.

However, I had a Mazda Protege back in college and it looked nice - the Red Dragon, but it was quite the money hole when it came to maintenance. I don't know if I was just unlucky or that is how it goes but my parents Corolla and Sentra both went 150k+ with basically zero issues. I got my car at 30k and in the next 90k had plenty of problems.

I'd say Sentra, Corollas, and Civics are always a safe bet. Personally, really dislike that grey Civic look though.

Any reason you aren't looking into getting a Prius or a Smart FourTwo or something? I am going to be commuting a lot and got not much scrills either but am thinking about a Prius. 72 month loans + low APR = awesome (I hope these are easy to come by).

Mazda 6 ofcourse!?

But for that money with your criteria (~6.000$ and at least from year 2004 and above) i would go with a BMW E46, easily... any engine version...

BMW = Most bang for the money, for your money you always get the best combination of quality/beauty/engineering/fuel u. & performance.... its a manual shifter & RWD aswell.... what more do you want for that cash?

The only time i would choose something else for that cash & year is if i desperately wanted a car with the least fuel consumption.

Aim for VW Passat, Jetta

Just don't take Mazda, they're not reliable

All Japanese car brands are the most reliable in the world, same goes with German.... then it depends on how each individual car has been treated...

The only real difference here is that Mazda 6 is hot and Passat/Jetta is not (including any of those other cars OP mentioned)... :)

Mazda and to an extent suzuki are really exceptions to the rule, most of their cars are really not reliable, any mechanic in the world will tell you this. Rx8 is one of the biggest fails in car history in terms of reliability, it's good that the looks saved it.

If you care about the better chance of have longevity and cheaper repair costs, go with the Corolla or Civic. Corolla over Civic in this case, Civic a close second.

True, but the repair costs for both of these types of cars are night and day. So many more after-market parts for Toyotas and Civics.

no I'll get them all here in the USA.. they're readily available and through the shop account I'll get them at a discount... just have to figure out how far I want to go on the rebuild vs the miles on the car..

Still going back and forth on if I want to keep it or sell it and do a project car for myself

As many race cars I've owned or driven and worked on over the years I've never actually built a wicked nasty street car for myself, its time..

don't get me wrong the M5 is a vicious car but it's a bit heavy and putting it on a diet doesn't get it into the weight class i'd like to see for the horsepower it has.. BMWs are heavy and doing forced induction is crazy expensive if you want to do it right... perfect street cars if you leave them alone, great little track cars for weekend play if you tweak them up but hyper expensive when you want to get into serious modding

I'm thinking of an 2000ish Audi S4, already turbocharged, with some tweaks to the ECU, bigger turbos, intercoolers, cams and exhaust you can get some serious horsepower and you're starting with a car that weighs 700 pounds less than the BMW and that's with the Quattro drive

OP jd power has reliability ratings that are pretty spot on over the years
