First oscar?
A man of many adventures, Hugh Glass goes West in 1822 in the employ of Captain Andrew Henry to do some profitable fur trapping. He is attacked by a bear, and badly injured. Miraculously, he survives, but the terrain makes it impossible to carry him back. Henry tries, but eventually hires two mercenaries to simply stand watch and bury him. They abandon Glass, alone and defenseless, but unfortunately for them, he recovers. He resolves to hunt down the men who abandoned him.

I agree, but I think 'The Departed' is massively overrated. Guess I'll have to give it another watch.
I almost feel like I don't even need to see the movie in the OP after reading that brief synopsis.

****ing Academy already lost their crediblity.. he should sit on 3 Oscars minimum, kicking right off with "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".. He was ****in marvelous in that one.
I don't want him to get some lifetime achievement Oscar, though/anyway.

Can I just say that DiCaprio is not as amazing of an actor as people make him out to be? I mean he's good, but people act like he's been deserving of all these oscars. The only thing he's ever blown me away in was the departed.
The departed was great, but his role in Blood Diamond and the Aviator I thought were equally as deserving.
I think people just think by now he should have at least one.
But I can see why the Academy will keep stiffing him, a lot of people tune in just to see if he'll finally win one.

Academy is a joke.. There are a couple of reasons why Leo doesn't have an Oscar, one is because for a long time they still saw him as some teen heart-throb... coming from Titanic.
And, he has a huge baby face.. and, they don't seem to like him. He's hardly been nominated.
Gilbert Grape (supporting), Aviator, Departed, Wall Street... Oscar stuff.

well thats the thing, he blew you away in departed, he blew someone away in some other movie.. its not 2-3 movies.. legitimately more than 10 movies where he blew people away.. how many actors can say that? DDL always waits for the perfect role and takes his time.. yeah quality over quantity but you need both if you want to be the greatest
tom jones won the year he was nominated for whats eating gilbert grape, jamie foxx won when he was nominated for the aviator and forrest whitaker won when he was nominated for the blood diamond.. none of them were better that year.. ralph fiennes for the schindlers list possibly and matthew last year..
still he should have at least 2 oscars.. and in the end he will probably get it for a performance that wasnt even in his top 5 career wise like al pacino did in scent of a woman.. sorry for being late, here you go the oscar..-but i wasnt even that good.. its ok man here you go.. sorry for being late 20 years

I never got into Blood Diamond until they started playing it on Encore over and over last year. Since I've probably seen it 5-6 times, but I also love Jennifer.
He was great in that movie. Loved it so much I went back and played Far Cry 2 again.

And The Basketball Diaries. Leo works with the best directors and takes Oscar-bait roles. How many roles has he taken that are not set in the past and/or he dies in it?

I think people say that in reference to Colin Firth, Jamie Foxx, Jeff Bridges, etc winning. It's not like DiCaprio is losing to great performances every year, there have been some pretty sketchy, gimmicky selections. While DiCaprio isn't Scorsese's muse for no reason.

He'll be worthy of a career achievement award even if he never wins an Oscar.

Lol if you think Leo is overrated. Daniel Day Lewis just yells and overacts through most of his films and he gets called a genius. Lincoln was the first film I saw with him where he did some real acting. Leo is great in everything he does. The best actor today.

The DDL comment is an overreaction, but I see where you are coming from.
Calling DiCaprio the best actor in the entire world today is just crazy imo. Even if we're just talking actors in English speaking films, do you really think he could pull off what Fassbender did in 12 Years or Hunger, or what McConaughey did in Dallas Buyers Club or True Detective, what Joaquin Phoenix did in Her or The Master? None of his role have been nearly as ambitious as those.
His performances in Wolf and Django are exactly how you described DDL's acting. Grandiose misrepresentations of the times/characters.

Streep has 2.
That's how Oscars work and my posts won't change that, anyway I thought Streep had 3 Oscars? Just checked it's three.
She has more Academy Award nominations than any actor or actress in history, winning Best Supporting Actress for Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) and Best Actress for Sophie's Choice (1982) and The Iron Lady (2011). Streep is one of only six actors who have won three or more competitive Academy Awards for acting.

No one (at least not me) is saying he should have gotten an Oscar for Departed, though... wait, I just see I mentioned it.. but yeah, it was an all around thing.
However: Gilbert Grape, Aviator, Shutter Island, and Wall Street, Oscar stuff for me.. Just dumb since he wasn't even nominated for Shutter Island.

Leo is an exceptional actor and is extremely versatile. He deserves way more than 1 Oscar. I enjoy almost every single one of his movies dating back to Basketball Diaries.
Definitely watching this film; especially with Tom Hardy as supporting actor. :applause:

I thought he was best in Django Unchained. This guy is a legendary actor; maybe he's young so people don't feel like giving him this much credit but he's amazing. I watch every one of his movies and enjoy it thoroughly.
Heck, even one of his less memorable performances (Catch Me If You Can) he did a good job.
The Departed, Blood Diamond, Wolf of Wall Street, Django Unchained, Aviator, Gilbert Grape and still doesn't have 1 Oscar. :facepalm

Uhm he was brilliant in In The Name of the Father; but GONY was his best acting performance, IMO.
He was genuinely scary.
DDL is a fantastic actor and deserves the praise; but Leo is also incredible and has yet to receive the same love.

I work as a controller and took finance as a major in my MBA program; am eligible for level 2 of the CFA exam now. My uncle was a banker in Manhattan too.
And I'll tell you something buddy; Leo played brilliantly as a stock broker. You can see his dynamic acting ability in that movie. I don't know what you're watching.

The one thing I really appreciate about Leo is that he is a true movie star that doesn't distract me from his characters. His fame and notoriety doesn't prevent me from buying in to the movie which I think is a little more difficult than people admit.

Word.
Every role you forget he's acting. You think the character is actually him.
If an actor can do that, he killed it.

Yah, he's a good leading man, but he's never deserved an Oscar. I'm not by any means a hater though and this movie looks great. I certainly like a lot of Dicaprio movies, especially his Scorcese work but also stuff like Body of Lies, Blood Diamond,Django etc.
Gatsby kinda sucked. Same for Shutter Island

Christoph Waltz stole the show (as he did in Inglorious Basteds) but I thought Django had the two best supporting actors (Leo & Christoph) I've seen in a long long time.
I just loved the dialogue and the cast; the story was engaging.
Maybe because it's fresh in my memory but I had a blast watching that movie. One of the few movies I have ever re-watched right after I watched it the first time. And it's almost 3 hours in length...

There's a ton of great people associated with this. Innaritu and Lubezki is enough for me to go see something without knowing anything about it. And Leo and Hardy is a great place to go after that.
Leo is a great actor. I've only recently decided that The Departed has aged well. And that's a surprise for me, because I was afraid the cell phone stuff would feel super dated almost as it was happening, and it sort of does. And I was also afraid all the shock moments toward the end wouldn't play well over time, and they don't necessarily. But the pacing is spot on, and like most of Scorcese's stuff, it just hits all these beats. The music is good. It looks great. It has a great mix of comic dialogue (Alec Baldwin steals all his scenes). The Nicholson roll is overwritten and overwrought, but it's okay, and pretty much everyone else is great. In fact if you want to argue Leo was screwed out of an Oscar in that movie, I'd argue that Matt Damon was better in it.
Wolf of Wallstreet is also starting to hit cable, and that's aging better than I expected when I saw it in theatre too.
Gatzby was a bad Oscar grab. And J. Edgar was an even worse Oscar grab.
I'd say Gilbert Grape, and The Aviator were his best performances, with a tip of the cap to Django. I've never actually seen Blood Diamond.
