View Full Version : Wow... if these predictions come true, humans will be extinct within 50 years.

Very scary. STRONGLY suggest you read till the end.

This shit seems inevitable. There is no way they will be able to control or stop something thousands or millions of times more intelligent than us. Makes you think, why are they attempting to create a ASI at all?

Let's see:
According to the major networks and magazines(not some obscure website) from the 70s we are currently supposed:
To be well into another Ice Age.
Dried up 95% of the world's oil reserves and oil should be around a $1000 a barrel.
To have an illegal Latino invasion overrunning our border and whites are no longer the majority.
....hmmm wait a minute...scratch that last part. They were correct about that one.

Hm wouldn't be that upset about it. One of my biggest pet peeves is that I won't be able to see all the progress humanity makes after I die.
So if humanity is killed along with me, I don't need to worry about that :lol

no. the 'ice age' thing was just a theory by a couple guys who wrote a book, made the news, and got repeated. news and excitement =/= fact.
i don't think the oil shortage theory was well-vetted either. it also couldn't take in to acct future oil sources and improved extraction techniques. OTOH, don't think there haven't been problems with relying so heavily on oil, because the problems do run deep.
re: this robot AI theory,
cool article and it could be plausible, but it hardly matters. we'll already be done far short of 50 years for a complex of problems that we brought on ourselves.

Anyway, what does this idiotic nonsense of a 'million times more intelligent' mean exactly? I'm pretty sure the concept of 'intelligence' is a construct used to make human beings feel better about themselves, and to help them value their own exceptionalism, but it doesn't actually have any concrete or objective meaning, so how can we create machines with this mythical capacity? The hubris of human beings, and the over-estimation of their own intelligence  - most even consider consciousness intelligence, when it would posit that consciousness is that most superficial and simplistic mode of thought the brain can engage in. No creative genius has ever arisen from the conscious part of the brain, as far as i'm aware, nor could it.
And I couldn't even get past the first couple paragraphs of the essay, as it's childishness and simplicity was so irritating, its ethnocentrism annoyingly short-sighted. That rubbish about transporting someone from the past :facepalm. First, intelligent men like Ben Franklin from 1750 knew very well that the future would bring unheralded changes, so the surprise he would feel would probably be less than the surprise felt by a short-sighted individual of even 100 years ago, not even due to the technological changes, but rather the cultural shifts, that make life for many old people who are still alive throughly exasperating. Many of the elderly feel like anachronisms in the modern world, and are only waiting to die (while getting their own back by sucking away wealth from the young). Tis a sad spectacle.
