Jeff Green for Kendrick Perkins.

Because OKC signed Perkins to a 4 year deal paying him 9 million per season the same day that they traded for him, before he even played a single game in a Thunder uniform.

Of course we all know the rest of the story, Perkins claims the title of "Worst starter in the NBA" for three straight seasons, Scott Brooks overplays him and watches as he constantly gets exploited and taken advantage of, and worst of all, the 9 million dollar cap hit prevented OKC from re-signing Harden under the salary cap.

Since Clay Bennett was definitely not going to pay the luxury tax, Harden was traded despite the difference between Harden and OKC's offers amounting to 4 million dollars over 4 seasons.

If OKC never acquires and overpays Perkins, Harden would still be in OKC.

Not to mention the addition by subtraction that occurs when OKC replaces Perkins with literally any other starting caliber center in the NBA, and of course having Jeff Green as a bench scorer.

This is a good point, actually. If they don't make the Green for Perkins trade and give him that stupid contract - they probably don't have to trade Harden.

the extension wasn't part of the trade though

the trade on it's own isn't that bad

At the time though, they really needed a defensive minded big. Didn't they have Nenad Krstic then? Shooting 3's and shit. The extension was not needed though. Any average center they could of gotten in the off season.
