View Full Version : All-Star Weekend Event Idea: Rep Your State 3v3 Tournament
I was debating with my friend earlier today about which state produces the best basketball talent (I'm from Illinois and hes from New York) and the idea came to me since All Star Weekend is coming up it would be cool to have a 3 on 3 single elimination tournament where players from certain states go in and represent their state against other teams representing their own states.
For example,
The Illinois team would consist of:
Anthony Davis/Dwyane Wade/Derrick Rose
(Andre Iguodala,Iman Shumpert,Tony Allen, and Pat Beverly could fill in)
New York Team:
Joakim Noah/Carmelo Anthony/Kemba Walker
(Lance Stephenson,Danny Green,Andre Drummond,Taj Gibson could fill in)
Georgia Team:
Dwight Howard/Josh Smith/Toney Douglas
(Jodie Meeks could take Douglas place)
Texas Team:
LaMarcus Aldridge/Chris Bosh/Jimmy Butler
(Wes Matthews,DeAndre Jordan,or Mike Dunleavy could fill in)
Pennsylvania Team:
Michael-Kidd Gilchrist/Dion Waiters/Kyle Lowry
(Tyreke Evans,DeJuan Blair,Jameer Nelson,Morris Twins could fill in. Kobe is injured)
North Carolina Team:
Hassan Whiteside/John Wall/Chris Paul
Ohio Team:
Jared Sullinger/LeBron James/Steph Curry
(Kevin Martin can fill in if LeBron decided to bich out)
Maryland Team:
Kevin Durant/Rudy Gay/Ty Lawson
And then California comes in and shits on everyone else because its such a huge state, so it would probably have to be split up in to 2 teams so here we go.
Cali 1:
Kevin Love/DeMar DeRozan/Russell Westbrook
Cali 2:
Tyson Chandler/Klay Thompson/James Harden
(Paul George and Brandon Jennings injured, and Damian Lillard is butthurt so he won't be participating this year, so that leaves on the reserves for both Cali teams to pick from: Paul Pierce,Andre Miller,Brook Lopez,Jeremy Lin,Jrue Holiday and Kawhi)
Australia Team:
Andrew Bogut/Dante Exum/Kyrie Irving
(Patty Mills Reserve)
Spain Team:
Marc Gasol/Pau Gasol/Ricky Rubio
Games would take place in a half court setting, 6 minute games, single elimination. Playground rules so don't expect to see Harden at the free throw line.
Thoughts on this idea? Which team would you choose to win the tournament?

I'd rather it be birth state rather than college state. Cali becomes unbeatable smallball (Klay/Goatbrook/Harden).
Otherwise great idea and I support it. More interesting than all events but the main game and 3 point shootout to be honest.

It is birth state lol, thats whats scary about Cali.
Although I feel Ohio or even Illinois could take out a small ball lineup with Klay Westbrook and Harden.
UPDATE: Added Maryland (Kevin Durant/Rudy Gay/Ty Lawson)

all time team would have tmac, david robinson, mitch richmond, artis gilmore, and eddie jones
Washington (Seattle) seems to have a lot of talent but not many big men haha.
Some of the guys from Washington include: Jamal Crawford,Nate Robinson,Zach LaVine,Tony Wroten,Avery Bradley,Isaiah Thomas,Spencer Hawes,Aaron Brooks, and Martell Webster.

Spent his entire childhood in Oregon. Grew up in Oregon. Played kindergarten through high school basketball in Oregon.
But yeah, he's from California.

May be true but this is all an example, you know? I guess if the NBA really were to do this players would choose where they actually want to play for.
I do feel Kevin Love would opt to play on a stacked Cali team over playing with Terrence Ross and Ronnie Brewer.

Born in the Chicago area and lived there for a good while so I guess Rose/Wade/AD for me.
I could see NJ being solid...Kyrie Irving, David West, JR Smith. Swap out JR for Kenneth Faried if he's chucking too much, but the talent is there. If only Bynum was healthy and not retarded...Kyrie, Faried, and 2012 Bynum would be sick.

I feel like JR Smith would be a beast in a 3v3 half court setting. Theres so much more space to work with and Faried would be great on the offensive boards picking up JR Smith's misses.

I guess there would need to be standards.
It's either birthplace (which sort of rules people like Steve Nash out forever), or where they spent most of their life (elementary, jr high, high), or where they went to college (that would give North Carolina too huge of an advantage... so no to that).
Anyway, I'm all for either of the first two. If number one I have to side with my birthplace (Oregon), if number two then I'm in California for the Championship Cruise.

Players would probably be given a choice to choose between birth team or where they went to high school. Def. not colleges.
So far though i feel like the current rosters would be accurate.

Yeah, dude is an excellent shooter..the spacing is helpful enough, but with Kyrie being such a nasty iso scorer it's so much deadlier. He gets clowned a lot and deservedly so, but in a less restrictive setting his shot creating ability would be pretty damn valuable. Not to mention he can defend when he needs to.
1v1 tournament has always been my dream asg or olympic eventOne day they're finally gonna get all the hyped up 1v1 players like KD, Melo, Harden, Bron, etc to do it...and then someone completely unexpected like Boris Diaw is gonna show up and dismantle all of them.

Well its only 3 guys on a team for a 6 minute game, and states in the US are just as big as countries. Spain is about the size of Texas.
And you can't tell me
Noah/Melo/Walker vs Gasol/Gasol/Rubio
Wouldn't be a good game to watch in a half court setting?

That game would be amazing lol but i feel you on this just curious and asking
That chicago team thoooo, this would be interesting
I could see Gasol brothers killin the inside but no outside shooting

On top of that both the Gasol brothers are amazing passers and paired with Rubio the ball movement =
I feel like Team Texas could do some damage with LMA Bosh and Butler.
Let me bring this back for the summer.

Steph Curry would def. be on NC. Grew up and went to HS/College there.
