Hey I just got down to my neighbor who I set up an internet connection for yesterday. She just called me saying the internet was really slow so I tried it out and it was painfully slow. Did a speedtest and I got 2 dl and 1 ul. I tried calling the ISP but they had closed for the day. I tried with a cable and I got 98 ul 90 dl.

So I figure it is either problem with the wirless or something else? Since the speed seems up really good when I connect it with a cable. It is a Zyxel modem that the ISP sent with the internet subscription.

Any ides?

Thanks!

Could be a weak WiFi signal coming from the router. Try bringing the laptop closer to the router and seeing if the speedtest is any different.

But yes, it is more than likely the router/modem.

Are there any other neighbors nearby? Does the wifi has password? Even if it does it is possible that someone has cracked the password and steal internet or a faulty router. My quick guesses.

Modem's fine, router is shit. Maybe check the bands on the wireless router and see if it's using 2.4 or 5 gHz. 2.4 is slower, but gives you more range. 5 is faster, but the range sucks.

Check to see if you have any devices or structures around the router that could throw it off. Microwave ovens, cordless phones, and metal cabinets can all mess with wireless signal. What kind of router are you using? Does it allow the 802.11n protocol to be used?

Have you tried unplugging it for 30 seconds?
