what do you think? i recently saw a documentary on Discovery, presenting "true" mermaid footage. obviously, i'm not convinced it's real or that mermaids infact exist - but its still something to think about.

when you realize that over 90% of the ocean hasn't been mapped and/or explored, who is to say? we don't really knows whats out there and cannot fathom the unknown.

Im sure there are things we have yet to find....but not much of interest. The ocean will never be fully explored if only for the thousands of miles of open water in the pacific between America and Asia. The Pacific is larger than all the abobe surface land on earth combined.

You will never map it in full...top to bottom. The 2% or whatever is kinda like counting the air directly above my house as unmapped airspace....

Its mostly open water of impossible to map volume. And a lot of it is so far down only 10-20 subs on earth can go...and not for long.

I suspect we have found most things bigger than say....a dog.

There are no doubt untold numbers of undiscovered tiny creatures. But thats true in the rainforest.

That mermaid "documentary" has been proven to be fake.

I'm open to the idea that there is life we have yet to see in the depths of the ocean. Particularly prehistoric life.

Seeing as all tetrapods evolved from fish, it's possible. Hell our arms evolved from a fish that grew them for doing push-ups in muddy environments. However it would have to be FAR more like a fish than a human to survive in the cold ass ocean. The human body's biochem pathways would get wrecked trying to live in aquatic environments.

The error here is lending any credence to the Discovery Channel and other channels like it. They are entertainment channels. They sell drama and narrative rather than information or education.

They hooked you in with their mystery-adventure tale about mermaids and an unexplored ocean. I hope you feel like an idiot.

That mermaid documentary on the discovery channel was a mocumentary. They said it was fake.

But like most posters have said, I'm sure there is undiscovered life in the ocean, but nothing like a mermaid, lochness or giant killer fish.

It would likely be microscopic life forms or random species of small fish. Mostly boring species nothing exciting would be my guess.

It is interesting though and I would love to see a new species discovered

not sure if you read my op, but nowhere did it say i believed the documentary.

anyway, it's not so much about "mermaids" as it is my curiosity about creatures and intelligent life alike below huge vastness of the ocean. you're basically in an alien environment so movement is different - all those factors combined is what makes the deep sea mysterious.

merely speculating on what's down there is just a bit of fun on my part. lighten up, kiddo.

I remember when that "documentary" aired, so many idiots thought it was real despite it clearly being actors and saying it wasn't real.
