Coaches like phil jackson who said kobe couldn't play defense

I guess the guys that do the selecting were using the eye test instead of their calculators. He's the greatest perimeter defender of all time. There's not a calculation in the world that's going to change that stat nerd.

Fisher>> Artest

Fisher was negative all the time

the last few was definitely based off his reputation.

in his prime though when he was stuck with garbage teams, he was roaming a lot more and gambling because he had such an offensive weight to carry. he literally did everything, score, space, control tempo etc

he was still an excellent gambler, but those habits sort of carried over later on.

3 peat kobe was a monster however

The last 5 he got were an absolute joke outside of 2009.

That's what happens when you let coaches get a vote, and they undoubtedly hand it off to some assistant to do.

Thats what I would say for lebron. It's an absolute abomination that he was allowed to ever make the defensive team when he was an above average at best defender at his position.

Yet the stat you use says he's a better defender than Artest. Also says that Luke Walton was a better defender than Kobe (and Ariza and a bunch of other guys).

You're an idiot.

TBH he didn't have that much competition most of the time.

No it doesn't it says fisher is worse. Yeah i'm not surprised about walton>> Kobe on defense, but it doesn't say he's better than ariza

Didn't deserve 09 either. Wade was 3rd in Defensive Player of The Year Voting and should have been on 1st team. 2008 he definitely deserved to be on 1st team assuming you meant 08 anyway.

Young Kobe was a good defender. His rep carried him longer than it should have

because that statistic is historically a terrible predictor of all defensive team selections. :confusedshrug:

Yet, both him and Kobe have 5 rings and played together. How does that work? What kind of stat is this?

not only was it a travesty to get it over wade, it was an even bigger travesty to get it over tony allen. the guy who specializes in defense and plays it to the max at a very high level for every minute he's in. every time kobe racked up another undeserved first team all nba and defensive teams, the award becomes more of a joke.

Reputation is a huge part of this process in all sports,

Derek Jeter somehow picked up 5 Gold Gloves through his career despite being an at best average defender. That said, I don't think Kobe was as bad as Jeter during his prime, Kobe actually looked good, but it's definitely true that the hype train was responsible for some of the selections.

Kobe at his peak deserved the selections. but before and after that certainly didn't.

Same way he got voted an All Star the last 2 seasons. Kobe is great at winning popularity contests.

Most of those defensive teams he earned not just all especially during his later years.

I seriously have no clue how he snuck in there in 11 and 12. Those are head scratchers of the highest order lmao.

In 2010 he at least showed before the injuries and in the playoffs that he was still capable of playing intense lockdown defense.
