View Full Version : NBA Live 15 is a better game than NBA 2K15

EDIT: Sorry this is such a long post but if you're someone who plays 2K a decent amount, I'd give it a read.

I picked Live up yesterday and decided to give it a try since 2k15 isn't even playable online with ridiculous lag and is far too easy in career and GM mode and overall plays very unrealistic...

Have started the "rising star" mode in Live 15 and it's epic so far. You start off picking a position, choosing a playstyle for that position, and then picking your height, weight, appearance options, etc.

I chose to make a 5'9 asian PG named Tony Lin (with a headband and a flat top) who is 160 pounds and a 3pt shooter, expecting to come in and dominate since they start you off pretty well stats wise if you choose to go the hard route and make your guy undersized...

I started off around 76 overall, shot something like 11 for 33 in the first game you play, but got 9 steals, and not many turnovers. Went 4th overall to the Magic and then got traded to the Lakers in a deal that centered around Jordan Hill. Cool thing about their rising star draft is that you can truly go anywhere and the whole draft shifts after where you go, unlike 2k where if you get "drafted" to a team the rest of the draft remains the same as what actually happened and the team that drafted you gets their original rookie with that same pick as well...

So now I'm playing as a bench player for the Lakers, occasionally playing with Jeremy Lin in the clutch, but I know for a fact you can come into the NBA as a starter on Live.

One thing I love about this game is that, the level of difficulty is far greater than NBA 2k15... I myself used to think of NBA Live as a game for casuals and 2k a game for the hardcore basketball fans but this year I have to argue against that...

My guy has currently like an 80 overall 3pt shot rating but because he's so undersized and because I'm used to 2K cheese I'm not even shooting 30% from deep. It's so realistic in this game, shot timing is much quicker with a smaller margin for error and you are going to be hard pressed to find your guy hitting any contested shots unless you get his contested shot hit rating all the way up... In like around 7 games so far and me shooting a bunch of shots I've hit maybe like 1-2 contested shots out of 20+...

The controls are better once you get used to them... Y is a hop button, and you can aim the direction of your hop for a stepback or power hop... or you can double tap Y to eurostep... Alley ooping is relegated to the B button which I like, since 2K made it a combination of buttons that didn't always work... Calling for the pick and roll is LT, dribbling is with the sticks and you can do dribble combination moves without any delay like 2k has...

Also, you know how in 2k if you make a 7'3 350 pd center he will still look like he weighs just 200 pounds? In Live you can choose to change your players build and one of them looks like a fatass, so it's realistic.

And as far as their GM mode, I went in there and messed around on their trade block feature to see if you could easily pull off a bunch of bullshit trades like in 2k and nope. Not a chance. I can't imagine their draft system being any worse than 2k's either. Another cool thing they did is if you want you can choose to redraft in the 2014 class and pick someone else with your teams pick. Not sure why 2k never did this.

Overall I'm loving Live so far. My friends, It's time to move on from 2k. They spend so much time on dumbass shit I don't even care about, like the story mode in My Career, which is stupid because it always forces a script like forcing you to leave your team at times, forcing you to miss shots, etc. Live's modes look very much more about giving you more control to do shit than taking control for you, and they are more about being as out of the way as possible, which is what I want.

If I'm a basketball gaming fan, I'd start investing in Live now, for the future. Once they get more time to build off of 15 they should have a solid game.

None man. If anything I've bashed EA an excessive amount over the years. I think the only worthwhile sports games they've had over the past 10 years have been some of their NHL and NCAA games, but otherwise they've put out a lot of garbage.

Live is just a better game. You can actually play online without constant bullshit lag, their ultimate team mode looks better than 2k's, their rising star mode has been more enjoyable for me thus far because they don't limit whatever you are able to do to force a script (for example you can come into 2k's mode averaging 50PPG for 20 straight games as a rookie and you'll still be riding the bench) and because it's far more challenging... I initially went the route of a 3pt shooting PG expecting this shit to be easy as hell like in 2k but it has been far from that and I'm playing on the Rookie mode...

Also if you care about broadcasting in games, Live has 2k beat there too.

They use ESPN for their layout for everything and it looks exactly like you're watching an ESPN game. Their commentators are JVG and Breen during the game, and Jalen Rose for halftime and post game. For postgame broadcasting it's layed out exactly like sports center and you can move up and down through the points that are listed in order on the left if you want. Pretty nice.

Side bar - I feel like due to the online connectivity of consoles and ability to release and patch holes later, this nasty trend of devs releasing unpolished games is sadly going to continue.

so live is pretty much like the older 2k's where they've already tried and done all that shit and this years version is something different when your actually bragging about an older 2k game that just had a title change to live 15

an in 2k, you dont get drafted, thats why the draft is the same...you sign as a undrafted rookie

yeah, in 2k15 but I was obviously talking about 2k14 and I think 2k13 where you got drafted but it was unrealistic as hell because whoever drafted you retained their original draft selection as well.

It also feels great knowing I can still play the career mode even when online isn't working (which happens all the time with 2k's shitty servers) and also, their UT mode so far has been far better than 2k's... Online auctioning and buying of individual players is badass and they have fun challenges that SET YOU UP with points and rewards to use... In short, they are far less jew-ey than 2k is about their currency system. For example, you can get 15k worth of coins through prizes and coins and shit from doing a simple challenge of beating the two best online UT's from the community.

And then you can go on the auction and get 80+ overall players for like 400 coins from what I've seen so far.

Sorry bruh, aside from 2k15 being a step up from the atrocity that was 2k14, 2k has been on the decline since 2011.

Practice?

I haven't played Live 15, but 2k15 is the worst 2k game in about 5 years, so it wouldn't surprise me.

2k has been the exact same game forever now, with no competition they feel no need to actually innovate and improve as they did when Live ruled the virtual blacktop. They aren't getting any of my money until they actually improve the game and not just give us yearly roster updates for $60

seriously 2k 11 and 2k12 are better than 2k15. That's saying something right there. 2k is falling off.

russ - The main advantage to me seems to be that 2k15 better simulates team basketball (and it improves in that regard every year). Spacing, rotations/help defense in general, cutting, etc. is all spectacular. 5-man units actually seem to have some synergy, and the motion offenses built into the game keep everybody engaged. Not many people run plays, but for those who do, a lot of the rubbish/broken sets have been removed from the game.

2k15 isn't perfect. My two main issues:

I think MyCareer is a broken mode, and the cinematic content from my understanding doesn't go beyond the second year. MyGM is much, much improved over last year, and MyLeague is a beast of a mode (only issue I have is that they need to improve the logic for player improvement/regression between seasons). I like MyTeam for the collection element, but gameplay is broken. Domination mode rewards you for playing in a certain way (to pile up points from limited threes, lots of post-ups), and the only way to climb through the ladder in RTTP is to play unrealistic ball (I've had my best success playing with all super athletes, and just running out in transition every basket).

The animations are kind of suspect at times. A fair number of inside moves have predetermined outcomes, and it's not even worth reacting to them (some have been in the game for years as well). The turnaround jumper was broken for awhile, and now there seem to be a couple of issues preventing up-tempo play (sometimes you can get locked into an animation of walking up the court that takes so long that it lets the defense get perfectly in position; also, even in 2-on-1 situations, if one of your guys bumps the defender in transition, it can trigger a reaction/backpeddle animation that will prevent a scoring opportunity).

I do like some things about Live a lot more. Presentation is on point for sure. There seems to be more control over live dribbles and crossovers. The animations aren't as problematic either. Servers seem to be better. But I still don't think the title does a good job of representing team ball. It's fine if you're going to isolate a ton, or call tons of specific shit manually, but there's no flow to offense, and team defenses don't do a great job of denying penetration (like they do in 2k; really forces you to adjust how you play).

Nothing against Live of course, I hope they get back on track (last Live I bought was 08 with Arenas on the cover, just have played the last two years with friends). It would be awesome if both titles become viable options for purchase. I think in terms of control/graphics/presentation, Live is doing a good job of closing the gap. But they're just not there yet in terms of having a robust franchise mode, or in terms of simulating 5-on-5 gameplay.

Just my two cents...

2K15 pisses me off with how unresponsive the controls are this year. Every move you pull off takes 1 to 2 seconds to happen. I feel like I have no control of my player at all with all these stupid animations. Don't get me started on how stupid your teammate AI is. I don't play Live but may give it a try next year because 2K is to damn animation base and also unrealistic. Getting sick of seeing all the bigs that are scrubs getting in the post and doing turn around J's and hitting them. Bum players playing like they are superstars.

you ever drive in and clearly tap x to pump fake but 2k takes over and decides you need to shoot it and screws you into a block or miss?

live has been hard as hell so far, nothing comes easy like 2k but overall it's a fun game with much better features

Listen, I have both games.

the Ultimate Team mode, which is what I bought it for, is dead in that game. It's also Pay to Win system, granted it took a year for 2K to fix their MyTeam system.

Gameplay wise, I don't like Live. Every one feels the same.

I've tried Live and it isn't. But it isn't awful and hopefully it will continue to improve because 2K is being some money grubbing piece of shit lately. They need competition.

Remember when NFL 2k5 came out to challenge Madden? I think they set it half the price and the game quality was equal, if not better. Wish someone could give 2K some of it's own medicine.

it's pay to win no more than 2k's is, but is much more viable in terms of getting good fast without having to either pay an assload or put in 20 hrs a week into the game.

I made a UT literally one hour ago and so far already have a team of

MCW (84 ovr), Stauskas (72 ovr), Wroten (71 ovr), Ryan Anderson (70 ovr), Turiaf, 69 ovr

with a bench of guys ranging from Jeremy Lamb and James Young to Chase Budinger.

and I still have 1000 coins to spare and am close to unlocking a pack where I get an item worth 15k coins.

Yeah Live is only 30 dollars now and depending on what you want from a basketball game is arguably better.

And NFL 2K5 was 100000000000000x the game that Madden was at the time, at half the price.

2k has just became a big disappointment for me. I can't even play online because of the lag, their default settings are so retardedly unrealistic, you can score 120+ pts in 5 minute quarters just straight jacking up 3's.

The last straw for me in 2k was when, in back to back my career games with the game almost over an error message popped up and I was returned to the main screen because 2k's servers went down so I couldn't ****ing play my career because of their DRM bullshit.

I'm surprised I even bought 2k15 after that shit they pulled in 2k14 tbh. Where they made basically every ****ing thing in the game require VC to do, even something as simple as trading in My GM mode or setting your lineup.

This ..this..this. The control are so non respnsive..the animations are awful. the shooting is jacked up...Perfect releases are near impossible to get and slightly early releases and slighty late releases are brick city. The offensive rebounding is still as ridiculous as ever and the defense still doesnt get back after missed shots and/or scored baskets... 2k15 is just terrible.
