What are you watching? MJ hasn't even been mentioned on sportscenter. Talking about everything other than he coached MJ.

RIP to a great coach.

I think most anyone who knows anything about college basketball know that Dean Smith coached a ton of great players over the years, Jordan included of course.

I was too young to watch that '82 championship team, but I do remember the '93 one that beat the Fab Five (what a game) and the Stackhouse-Wallace duo in the 90s that was really fun to watch.

In My opinion , best coach ever.Lot would say that wooden is , but UNC is my team.Dean could really relate to all types of players regardless of background, he would do the small things to make u feel special even after they left the program for years.RIP COACH.

This is definitely NOT true. Dean Smith is respected first and foremost as the coach of NC and one of the most successful coaches in history. I honestly think this is just your viewpoint......I've never gotten the impression that people only remember him because of MJ. In fact, I've rarely ever heard it. There's been tons of great players to come through NC and had great college careers...Hell, honestly I think of Tyler Hansborough first because he's NC's leading scorer all time I believe and he played their more recently than MJ.

This.

He was one of the best ever at what he did and he lived for 80+ years. Didn't he have dementia or something similar? According to one of the articles I read, he died "peacefully". He lived a life which only very few people do. Glad that he doesn't have to suffer anymore from his ailments.

One of the greatest basketball minds of all time.

One of the great basketball innovators of all-time. Also, and most importantly, he was about as genuinely nice of a person as there is. "The Carolina Way" and the familial atmosphere he built at UNC is something that will live on for years and years.

He was my first taste of sports being bigger than a game. Many of my childhood memories were from the joy of watching his teams win and the life lessons he taught me on how to handle yourself after he loss. I am not much for hero worship: there is my father and there is Coach Smith. Any time I find myself in a moral dilemma, I ask myself "What would Dean Smith do?". I wouldn't be the man I am today without him.

It's unbearably saddening that a man with such a great mind as his would be taken down by dementia. You have to understand how astounding his memory was. There are countless stories (even within my own family and friends) on how people would meet Coach Smith in passing once, and then again years later and he would know you by name and within the flow of a conversation ask about your life, or whatever you discussed the first time you met him. With a mind like that, he could have done nearly anything he wanted to and I am forever grateful he chose basketball as his career path.

He was one of the first to chart everything in practices and games. Everything would be scheduled to the second, including the amount of time you had to drink water. Far ahead of his time in regards to advanced stats and basketball analysis. As a high school basketball player, he fought to integrate his high school's basketball team. He was the central figure in integrating Chapel Hill and, of course, UNC. There's the great Charlie Scott recruitment story on how he took Scott to restaurants that at the time didn't welcome people of his race. He did so much for civil rights advocacy, and he rarely ever spoke of it. I forgot which biography I read. In one of them a few players Coach Smith recruited that didn't even chose UNC had stories on how they still received Christmas cards from him to that current day. Coach would step out of any meeting or stop what he was doing if a former player of his called. It wasn't long ago I read an article on how O'Koren, Doh, Shammond, Black, Bobby Jones, and others, players spanning of 30-40 years, felt the need to connect with the past and future generations of UNC basketball. He built a family.

Coach Smith changed the game of basketball and bettered the lives of immeasurable amounts of people. RIP and thank you.

I'm not supposed to see the retards on ISH that don't understand what I said. Take your head out your asses and actually look on Twitter, you look at 80% of the remembrance of Coach Smith on the site it includes MJ. People need to acknowledge his career winnings and impact on offenses today.
