Are anime and cartoons demonizing gays, lesbians and transgenders?

I have noticed a lot that in anime and cartoon, especially back in the 90s and early 2000's, that a lot of the villians in shows used to be mad gay. Pretty much the most hated characters were caricatures of gay people or trannies or really camp mofos. Some examples -

So many more I can't remember right now, but its seems to have been a really weird phenomenon. Not sure someone would be able to make gay villains in cartoon shows nowadays. Too many gay ****** would be hating.
