Sup guys?

I'm about to throw up a post on some great rap songs over say, dunno if I will make it the last 10 or 25 years.

I have a sick lil list but I was curious what y'all thought too...

What are the greatest/ best beats/ best bars/ most intelligent, most evocative...etc. rap songs ever made or in the last generation or so?

I'm very curious since we had the thread on personal top 5 songs so let's get more niche with it.

Well these are some of my fav of all time

Kid Cudi - dat new new
Kendrick Swiming pools (you can trow whole gkmc tbh)
Nas - Halftime, ny state of mind
French - once in awhile
Asap rocky - leaf /trilla

Best beats right now - boi1da (best in the game right now), mike will, kanye. (they can sure make that dark techno sound) Metro went south...

underated Kind Los (whatever his name is right now)
hate Ty Dolla (same shit), ink, brizzy (90% of the time), meek mill.

Big Sean has been on a tear lately.

Gotta add Renegade with Em and Jay Z. My all-time favorite.

I feel like Ransom with Drake and Lil Wayne is a classic but it never gets mentioned. That song kick-started the Drake era. Epic.

Some personal favorites off the top of my head...

Canibus- Poet Laureate II (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vuXrT03lyGo)

Basically the whole point of the track is Bis laying the claim that he's the best of his time and all time. While I don't agree, with what he does here, hard to argue with him just taking this one song into consideration. No chorus, no gimmicks, just pure rhyme/poetry. He changes up his flow as he follows Stoupe's monster beat. He goes from different perspectives- first 3rd person, then first. Just the pinnacle of mic work.

Nas- Memory Lane (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXBFG2vsyCM)

The GOAT in his element. Showing why he's one of the great storytellers of his time. Not more needs to be said. You listen, it takes you to a certain place and time. He paints a picture of his life, past, hood.

Geto Boys- My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KutXyPEEbQs)

Scarface is bar none the realest muhphucka hip hop has ever seen. Never any bullshit studio, A&R crafted image. He wasn't afraid to bare his soul on wax. He wrote and produced this (and many other underrated classics). This wasn't too long after Bushwick Bill shot himself in the eye after a botched suicide attempt while he was blitzed off Everclear, so Face incorporated that whole idea into the song and their album cover.

Jedi Mind Tricks- Uncommon Valor (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaI_lmZuGhY)

RA the Rugged Man's verse on this is one of the best ever, period. He tells the story of his father's time in Vietnam in the first person. Absolutely flawless technically and very poignant.

Could go into more detail on other tracks, verses, beats, etc but I'm not thinking straight right now. Tired as phuck, might come back later

Kanye West - Bound 2

Just really captures the heart of hip hop with excellent rhymes that make you think profoundly about the nature of love and the universe. He's like the second coming of Shakespeare. It really captures in an artful way the inner city beginnings of rap music.

Favorites that first come to mind:

Common - Be (Intro)
Common - Faithful
Outkast - B.O.B.
Chance the Rapper - Chain Smoker
Ludacris - Rollout
Kanye - Diamonds Remix

Most of the "best" songs are kinda boring to me know because either their sound has been copied so often that it sounds unoriginal or I've listened to it too much.

No list is complete...
Fixed.

But whoever wants to get into real rap, beside those old school rappers its "must to" to hear some underground geniuses like Atmosphere, Army of the Pharaohs, Rhyme Asylum, Mr Hyde, The Rugged Man, Deliquent Habits etc etc etc. They are the real masters of rime.

Just listen to this shit... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZHoroQLNNQ

Mr. Jones really let his nuts hang on that one.

Might be controversial, but I'm gonna go ahead and label Nas as not only the GOAT, but also the greatest storyteller in Hip Hop History.

He can tell it straightforward (Surviving the Times (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0T75uxpUtQ))

He can tell it backwards (Rewind (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3Sd2gDkSV8))

He can tell it from the perspective of an inanimate object (I Gave You Power (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUwJ8WcZ6RY))*Tupac bit this shit HARD

The muhphucka told the story of his own birth :biggums: (Fetus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSSlxwd5ZD4))

Forget rap... what artist in any musical medium can weave stories like that?

Im torn when it comes to post IWW Nas because he lacks the same flow, rhyming and delivery. He gets inconsistent past IWW where he has some misses. His lyrics are there, but what made him special (flow, rhyming, delivery, cadence, etc.) is lacking.

I will get shitted on for saying this, but my fav storyteller is Big L. Dude is fluid and entertaining.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAfhCsdw9Zg&spfreload=10&ab_channel=byrdybyrd

But if I was to put my money on the GOAT storyteller, Im doubling down on this man.

It's like he's writing a full story and you can see it all very vividly.

The Giancana Story and Roots of Evil should be studied by every music fan.

Big L was an OK storyteller. Kool G Rap is criminally underrated. He and Nas made magic on Fast Life (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8RKdjYCGIg).

Speaking of storytellers- recently saw an ESPN interview with John Starks where he admits Biggie's story (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfpvpKfR2Ck) was true... just not about him. He wouldn't say who it was though. :oldlol:

I always make sure to include G Rap in my top 10.

Beast man... one of the few rappers that has been relevant and killing it in the 80s, 90s and 00s. Doesn't sound outdated at all, still brings it.
