I have never heard of Westbrook saying cruel shit to other players. Garnett has a history of being a piece of shit so he gets a pass. But I never hear of Russ saying shit to nobody.

players scream all game long profanities.. are constantly yelling.. larry bird calmly stating 'you dont belong in this league' or 'you cant guard me' to a guy would draw absolutely no attention from the refs.

True.

Anyways, we don't know if Lebron talks trash like that or not. He probably does, it's what ball players do.

There's a video of Lebron and Kobe talking trash to each other in game a few years ago, would pay money to listen to what they were saying to each other.

This is why Larry is the GOAT SF. LeBron would never do/say such a thing. Anyone have that gif of him trying to shake Mo Williams' hand after he left Cleveland? :facepalm Compare that to what Larry did/said to 'nique.

Pretty sure that Bird wasn't referring Nique to houses. Doubt it was a typo either, the author probably doesn't realize it's "Holmes"

pretty sure it's "homes" as in "homeboy"

"Holmes" (L is not silent) is the correct Ebonics pronunciation which has a history of being used equivalently with, "dude", "guy", "man" or similar non-familiar alternatives not in the third person.

It was made popular in late 60s East Coast slang, and then later devolved into, "homes" (silent L) at which point it was incorrectly assumed to be short for, "homeboy".

"Homeboy" is typically expressed as a familiar, friendly term often in the third person.

Unlike homeboy, holmes can be used in a variety of ways to denote friendship, aggressiveness, or dubious curiousity.
"What you lookin at holmes?"

"Nice score on that one holmes!"

Apparently, Durant has a story of LeBron trash talking.

"We were playing the Cavs back in 08. I'll never forget it", Durant said.

LeBron was having a good game and I knew he was on that night. So, I wanted to make sure he knew I wasn't going to back down to the challenge.

LeBron was guarding me and I said, "Watch I swish this 3 in your face." LeBron just smiled. Swish. Just like that I made the shot. LeBron looked back at me and was like, "Nice shot. You want to collude?"

"I couldn't believe it." said Durant.

Most of the stars who trashtalked did it in a fun / competitive way, just confidence thinking out loud.... but Payton was completely different, he would say some very crazy things that made you wanna throw punches 24-7... hits a shot and runs up to MJ: "**** you!", hits again and runs up to Pippen: "**** you!", hits again and runs up to Bulls bench and sings: "**** youuUuuuU"...... yes, this really happened.... and thats nothing....

Later on, after Craig Hodges won the NBA All-Star Game Three-Point contest in Bird’s absence, Hodges was asked if the victory was tainted because Bird hadn’t participated. “He knows where he can find me,” was Hodges retort. Told of Hodges’ challenge, Bird replied, “Yeah, at the end of the Bulls bench.”

Who cares man. Honestly Larry Bird is probably the most overrated player of all time and pretty much the bulk of his career was played in a WEAK era. Imagine a stiff like Bird trying to play against LeBron or Durant today. He'd get absolutely roasted.

Bird in the Three Point Shoot Out:

“Larry walks in and says I hope all you guys in here are thinking about second place, because I’m winning this…’EXCUSE ME?!’

“And he started shooting and he just didn’t miss.”

Of course, he won, lifting his finger in the air before the final shot went in, and not even removing his warm up jacket.

Cool story :lol
Larry was always talking that type of smack, either just for fun or to try and get the upper hand, especially against great players.
He showed big respect for Nique many times too, giving him major praise for his 1986 season and after their 1988 Playoff duel.

Bird's easily one of the GOAT trash-talkers, if not #1. These vids and the quotes/stories in the descriptions are simply priceless...

That's one of his most iconic moments but his best performance was in 1986, when he had 22 points in the final round (4th all-time) with 11 straight shots made (2nd all-time).

Yea, totally...

Having to go h2h against (or being guarded by) Erving, Wilkins, King, Cooper, Dantley, Bobby Jones, Rodman, Aguirre, Pippen, McCray, Marques Johnson, Pressey, Nance, Woolridge, Kersey, Ho Grant, Xavier McDaniel, Chambers...

No wonder he was so good, playing against all them stiffs

Playing with tougher rules and driving to the paint with "real" bigmen is as easy as taking candy from a baby...

Having to compete with superstars like Kareem, Jordan, Magic, Moses, Erving, Hakeem, Barkley, Gervin, Drexler, Ewing, Isiah, Moncrief...

Having to face teams like the showtime Lakers, bad boys Pistons, Moses/Erving's 76ers, 80's Bucks, Hakeem/Sampson's Rockets, Jordan's Bulls...

I bet LeBron or Durant wish they could've had it easy like that

Bird GOAT swag.
Bird had that thing that very, very few people actually had. He genuinely didn't care what you thought about him unless you were teammate or coach.

He was raised in serious poverty. Before he succeeded at Indiana State, he went to Indiana to play for Bobby Knight, but left before the the season started. He just went home. He only owned a small amount of clothes and was borrowing from his roommate. It was the first time he realized how poor he was and just went home.

He now has this reputation as a great trash talker and as a very funny guy, but he went first went to Boston, reporters thought he might be an idiot because he never spoke. He had a reputation as a moron. It was only after a few years in Boston, did Bird's sense of humor come out and did he get comfortable around reporters.

A reporter once asked him why he was frank in interviews and why he just didn't go off the record and Bird replied, "I don't care. I never read this stuff."

People forget the hard life Larry had (he grew up more poor than Magic) in his youth that definetly shaped him to become probably the greatest and coldest trash talker ever.
