Modern Guilt is awesome.
If there's a recent Beck album that should've been nominated is that one. Thought it should've been nominated that year, Danger Mouse was on fire that year.
I've tried listening to last year's album (the one that won the Grammy) and it's not entertaining artistically.
Btw.... Beck samples better than Ye.

I am one of the few that admires Yeezus.
Ironically, he didn't touch the production. I did prefer his rapping on Yeezus on it because he abandoned his usually corny style and went in full MC mode (well... for the most part). Yeezus is his most musically impressive and daring album.

Why do people hate on Kanye's art simply because of his personality? If we did this for every great artist/thinker, we'd have to discredit at least 25% of them. Kanye is a dickhead, an egomaniac, but it doesn't mean he isn't the most influential artist certainly of the past 15 years. He changed (for the better) the biggest genre in the world. No artist in history has as had as much impact on any one genre as Kanye had. The beats, subject matter, overall aesthetic, breaking boundaries, removing stereotypes, sampling, back-pack rap...
He is a futurist. When people said they hated 808s And Heartbreaks they failed to see that it would become the sound years later. I personally doubt Yeezus will do the same (especially because he simply jumped on a train of 'noise-hop' perfected by Death Grips, not Kanye) but still. MBDTF is one of the greatest projects in music history.

The dude has been around longer than anyone else nominated, he is as much an artist as any. The fact that Kanye thinks Beyonce, who doesn't even write her own lyrics is a better artist than Beck, who plays 14 instruments is absurd.

right, and the thing to me is-- didn't kanye do almost the exact same thing to taylor swift five years ago? then for years afterwards he said he felt persecuted and hated on for doing so.
THEN he comes back and does it again. i mean shit, isn't that what they say the definition of insanity is...? plus i gotta wonder how jay-z feels about all this. like, how about kanye try to help his own wife with a music career or something and let the other guy take care of his wife over there...?

IIRC beck is more of a fusion-type, shapeshifting kind of artist who came in during the big rise of alt-rock and alt-pop. he helped create a new genre of music, then he rode it all the way to the top and stayed there a long time.

Was listening to the Hollywood Prospectus podcast on Grantland and Andy Greenwald made a great point about Kanye being the best thing that's ever happened to the Grammys. Not only is he the most entertaining person there but he also seems to be the only person that deeply cares about them as a source of artistic validation. Every time he pulls something like this he basically says that the Grammys matter.

the thing that bothers me the most about kanye is that the 'best stuff' i've ever heard from him has been either:
a) doing mediocre lines over other ppl's awesome riffs, like daft-punk's 'stronger-better-faster' one.
b) trying to be some hard-edged badass, not seeming to realise that it was done long before him and done for a real purpose, like PE and NWA and whatnot.
i have many years of love for hip-hop, but now this yahoo came along. okay, fine... let's be humble... let's give him a chance... problem is, all i keep hearing from him is mouth and attitude. where are his actual 'good songs'?

b) trying to be some hard-edged badass, not seeming to realise that it was done long before him and done for a real purpose, like PE and NWA and whatnot.
i have many years of love for hip-hop, but now this yahoo came along. okay, fine... let's be humble... let's give him a chance... problem is, all i keep hearing from him is mouth and attitude. where are his actual 'good songs'?
someone wanna help me out on this? give me a kanye west top-five, pls. maybe i'm just ignorant and i'll apologise after i've heard his true genius. 3-2-1, go.
His first couple albums were good. Even if you don't like his rapping style, his song writing and production skills are legit. His last couple albums have been complete garbage though, and I'm guessing he threw them together in a week. I wouldn't even be shocked if he purposefully made garbage music just to see if people would still buy it (which they did). :oldlol:

mother of god... i mean thank you for your honesty, bro. you were honest and i thank you for that.
Try:
Gorgeous
So Appalled
Dark Fantasy
Blood On The Leaves
Heartless(I know you've heard this)
and listen to his collaborative album with Jay Z, which you probably already have.
You probably just aren't a Kanye fan and I don't know many people over the age of 30 who are, so I don't blame you. You don't paint me as a guy to enjoy Kanye West, who has made a lot of pop music geared toward teenagers and young adults.(like myself)

I'm just gonna guess he was drunk at the Grammys.
Pretty much. It's basically a Grammys tradition at this point. I honestly don't care about all his PR nightmare shit because when it comes down to it he is one of the most vulnerable and honest people in music when it comes to the music he puts on his albums. Yeezus was a lot different than his other albums but it was clearly his most experimental and political album.

thanks, i tried Can't tell me Nothing and Gorgeous for now.
i think what i'm hearing from kanye is righteous anger / disgust and a way of slowly, triumphantly drawing out the middle finger in a new kind of way for our culture. doing it on one of the biggest stages in life (the music stage). like... "hear my voice or not... i'm not here to please... i'm angry and i'll say it slowly for extra drama, muthaflucka."
i think he's more technical than previous artists as a whole. as a producer he knows how to manipulate effects better than the earlier guys. but that's also true of films and budgets, and on the whole it's not necessarily a good thing.
working thought: i don't agree with the spirit of his message, but i think now i see where he's coming from. i would not call him a genius by any means, but talented, sure.

people don't realize that he doesn't produce most of his music. Hasn't done the vast majority of production in a long time.
One can tell when he does produce something cause it's very basic and usually consists of a simple loop with his same drum style.

Aside from his whacky Scientology beliefs, there's not a lot bad you can say about Beck. He's built a two decades+ career making music and shows no signs of stopping. Blessedly he's not resigned to cheap publicity stunts to make sure everyone pays attention to him.

I never even heard of Conyay until he disrupted Beck.
Kanye being a dumbass aside
Does anyone actually think the latest Beck album was any good?

Just because you don't know of him, it doesn't mean he didn't deserve the award. Same shit happened when Esperanza Spalding won Best New Artist over Justin Bieber, and teenage girls went on a frenzy and ruined Esperanza's wiki page :lol
But go look at any Esperanza Spalding video and then look me in the eye and tell me Bieber was more deserving of the award

A better question is, who listened to it?
