any tips? - Bring comfortable / good walking shoes....a zip up hoodie for the evening
You should Visit - GoldenGate bridge ( you can rent bikes and ride across the bridge) afterwards drive/cab/ride down to pier 39 enjoy some lunch then hop on a cable car to Union Square.( cable car wait can be 15 - 30 minutes depending on the crowd)
nearest basketball city is Oakland ,Golden state warriors- (across the Bay Bridge about 20 - 30 minutes away if you drive....or you can take BART train and get dropped off next to the arena in about 10 minutes) Tickets can start anywhere from 30 - 100$ depending on who the Warriors are playing.

don't go to pier 39 unless you want to go to the most touristy sh*thole in the city, or if you wanna eat at bubba gump shrimp or some BS like that.
You can catch boat rides to the bridge there but I would not eat there. Best place to eat is the marina district, good variety of restaurants and even the more upscale ones will not break the bank.
Public transportation is excellent, your google maps app will come in very handy for bus routes. Driving around downtown in that city is a b*tch due to the hills and the cyclists.
There are redwood forests near there too. A must see IMO.

just jokin. how long you going to be around? Watching a Warriors game is a must must must experience. Best fans and game atmosphere in the NBA! Also, there is too much stuff to list...it depends on what you like. My personal favorite to show tourists is the California Academy of Science night experience (Thursday evening). It is such an awesome experience. If possible, do the segway tour of Golden Gate park before and end the day with that.

Will you have a car? Driving around San Francisco is pretty interesting, especially when you climb up their super steep hills.
Twin Peaks is very cool lookout spot where you can see the whole city and bay from.
The drive on Highway 1 South of San Francisco is really beautiful. There's all these little beaches tucked in amongst steep cliffs

Definitely get to the Redwoods. Eat some delicious Mexican food at La Taqueria.
Visit the buffalo in Golden Gate Park.
If you're friend works at Facebook, he'll know where to go.

I heard there's a waiting list to get into a Warriors game. Can you just walk up to the arena on the night of a game and buy a ticket, or does it have to be done some time in advance?

I think it was in NBA 2K and NBA Street. So there's that, haha.

apart from it being like the gay capital of the world with like 25% of gay (dont take my word for it tho on that percentage number) only thing i know about san francisco is that its a worlds away different from L.A, the golden state, OAKLAND hoods, and golden state bridge (nba team :) )

Get your tickets online yea I'm sure you can get them at the time and they will be expensive but worth it that experience is legit.
I really liked taking a bike ride down past Crissey Field and Golden Gate park across the bridge and over to Sausalito and grabbing some lunch then biking back to Ghiradeli and getting some ice cream. I have also walked that same route... was like 12 miles though so not for the lolly gaggers.
Set aside some time to walk around and just check shit out... always things going on. I am a walker though so I like that. I like to walk and drink ha
