Believe it or not, this is not an original idea. They use to do this in the old ABA where the best team like the Denver Nuggets would play the rest of the league.

8 contestants using the 80s format. Seriously, they are always trying to "rejuvenate" the contest with some sort of gimmick, but the thing that made it great in the first place was simply the competition.
