MJ + SHAQ
i dont think that would have worked.
Kobe came in young and not ready to start in the NBA.
MJ was way more mature and would try to be the teams leader from day one. Shaq would let that happen. Mega beef.

4 rings? Shaq + Kobe = 3 rings
Shaq + Jordan = 7/8 rings

Jordan is so alpha, Shaq would eat chocolate after every training and cry. He would gain his final "Fat-Shaq" http://trendingsearches.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/140571090-23fc7ac0c2facbe64efd8a0d0867a3ef.4c5a3740-scaled.jpg form in 1998

Inside outside combination of Shaq and MJ? Unstoppable. Won't have a single problem.

Kobe is a little bitchier than Jordan was.
I think MJ and Shaq would work better.

As others have said, Shaq paired with Jordan would be unstoppable.
One of the best and most unstoppable bigs to ever play the game in Shaq, paired with Michael Jordan the greatest shooting guard/player in NBA history. Game over.
Arguably, they could win the championship every year they played. No weaknesses. It would just be a matter of how much they wanted to win. Obviously, with Jordan's epic motor and drive to win, this combination becomes even more unstoppable.

it goes beyond that.
tex winters said kobe and shaq complimented each other than shaq and jordan would have
knowing that jordan had absolutely garbage range, he wouldnt be able to stretch the floor nearly as much as kobe did

MJ and Shaq would of been unstoppable force for a few years at least 3 or 4 championship, but I am not sure both ego's wouldn't of clashed ala like Kobe/Shaq did. I felt Kobe/Shaq was a match made in heaven playstyle wise and role beautifully both players fit each others weakness almost perfectly.

When was Shaq ever content with sharing the spotlight? Prime Shaq would never be the "#2 option." He would at worst be a co-#1. What if a coach decided to run the offense through Shaq? How would MJ react to not being able to take 22-25 FGA each game?
If Kobe replaces MJ is the incumbent star in LA and MJ the newcomer. Why would they demote Shaq and install a new offense with MJ as the #1 option? They would incorporate MJ like they did with Kobe in a Shaq-oriented offense.

...except that Jordan WOULD still be able to take 22-23 FGA/gm, just like Kobe did.

So what changes? Had Jordan not retired twice the Bulls probably win 9 straight championships anyway. With 95 being iffy.
