I want to eventually reach this number and am looking at all options right now. I'll probably have to end up pulling from multiple sources of income, but thats fine.

One of the current things I'm considering is creating a forum based website with a blog that has about one blog post a week, and then investing some of my money into 1. giving the website search priority, and 2. paying people to post on the forums to start driving more traffic to the website

I'll start off with relatively low ads, I figure, but then once I see the website get a decent amount of daily visitors, start increasing them.

Problem atm is that I just don't know what type of blog/forum that it would be.

Chances are you aren't going to make any money off a blog. Everyone does that shit and makes nothing because it's so easy to do but hard to actually be successful in unless you are already somebody of note within the chosen genre.

I like the idea of a forum because people are creating threads and shit and creating the search keywords for you... doing all the work.

Traditional message boards or forums like this are a dying breed... twitter, facebook , reddit etc etc are dominating..

plus blogs, you can't post once a week and expect to generate $$$ the blogs that do well are having multiple postings per day and generation 1000s upon 1000s of hits on each posting

you just have to stick with it.. integrate multiple platforms to promote your site and be ready to change if something doesn't seem to be generating the results you want

promotion is the biggest thing, twitter facebook even pinterest you have to get people to the site and then you have to have content that is good enough that it makes it a daily stop for folks.. don't underestimate pinterest its a chick magnet and more importantly a good post on pinterest will keep generating hits for months.. they won't come in one big chunk but they are steady

People truly underestimate how hard it is to get people to come to your website/try new things.

If you write a blog you'll be lucky to make money (and likely you'll end up in the negatives).

My suggestion would be to spend all that time and learn TANGIBLE skills. Then, make a blog etc as a way to market YOURSELF. Read this for an example of how someone became something that the internet wants...she's awesome.

my website design is going to be so much better than it currently is...

gonna have a nice black and orange logo with a basketball icon, then going to center a toolbar at the very top center including a link to the news feed, a topics section to find news you want, a weekly blog for more opion based articles, and then maybe a forum section... with the homepage of the site being very detailed, constantly updating news feed that will hopefully be sorted by category making it easy to find what you want...

going to take a lot of work but this may be a site that I as a basketball fan will actually use. my hope is that it can be the essential homepage for the hardcore basketball fan.

the hardest part is going to be the initial part of building the site which is going to be a bitch.

after that everything will basically be automated besides the weekly blogs, which will just require me writing a blog about whatever I want thats basketball related once a week.

I've figured out how to get it working and everything, just takes a lot of work and a lot of promoting and shit to get it where it needs to be.

feels like I should just cut my losses while I'm ahead. Already onto other ways for making money. will just cancel my host plan, try to sell the domain name, if not just take the 10 dollar hit. whatever.

Unless you have credentials or are just insanely gifted as a writer your not going to make money off a blog. Most people do it as a hobby and expect to make little to nothing from it.

I find the my most successful projects are the ones I do for myself that are not motivated by financial gain. If you want to make money either get a job or sell drugs.

Also it's not going to be quick either and honestly if you had anything important or interesting to contribute you probably wouldn't be doing it on here IF there were actually a monetary incentive.

1- you love it
2- you are consistent
3- you differentiate from your competition


numbers 1 and 2 are essentials. number 2 is rarely achieved without number 1.
