No idea why he was scared to do it. Obviously it would be rigged for him to win. All he'd have to do is the bare minimum.

He would probably be the most pathetic player in NBA history if he actualy said this. Please tell me this is true.

It's funny how he says it was never his thing yet he teased for years that he'd do it. He was just shook. How are you going to act like you never cared to do it but tease every year to build anticipation and then drop it? :kobe:

He's also self deprecating so you have to respect that

He's also self deprecating so you have to respect thatThought this was interesting, from Dominique Wilkins:

“Don’t try to save your best dunks for later. You come out strong and you make a statement at the very beginning. So even if the dunks you make after that might not be that good, people will think that they’re good.

“My philosophy has always been come out strong in the early rounds. Because if you try to save it you end up getting eliminated because you’re saving stuff for later.” Always wondered how people managed their dunk selection. Watching Nique's history, you can see that's how he rolled. He wowed folks early and that way, as the contest wore on, people began believing greatness was happening even if he was repeating or stepping down a bit in terms of difficulty.

Out of all the shit that gets said about LeBron, this is probably the thing I have the biggest issue with. How, as you said, he has to constantly tease everybody and make things a big mystery, just for the sole purpose of getting additional media attention. He did this with the slam dunk contest, did it last summer, and brought it to embarrassing levels in the summer of 2010. His constant need to make a big spectacle out of everything is his most annoying trait to me

No one wants to see a 30 year old in a dunk contest anyway. Lets the kids do it.

Why do people hold this insignificant contest against him? Yeah, we know LeBron* is 2nd/3rd tier greatest of all time, but thats not because of some fcken DUNK CONTEST.

He teased for years he would join and then he would bail out. He said it wasn't his thing but now he regrets not joining. That's why they hold it against him but mostly the teasing.

Can he not do it next year? James would still be solid in dunk trickery at 31.

He's probably the GOAT athlete at his height and weight in the NBA. The NBA deserved for him to be in the contest.

That being said, it really doesn't matter. The All-Star break is just a joke and I'd rather see elite players get a weeks worth of rest, rather than participate in ridiculous events.

Wait... He's "attention whoring" because a reported asked him a question and he answered it?

Wasn't aware he was just answering a question, considering there's no link and no article or anything in the OP. And I never said Lebron hasn't been unfairly criticized, so idk about the KD link..he might take the cake as far as that's concerned. But are we really gonna act like he hasn't been an attention whore about the dunk contest over the years?

The guy is definitely an idiot when it comes to talking to the press. I'm not going to disagree with you on that. However, the media does exaggerate whatever he says. They basically try to make a story out of nothing and they do succeed.

Saying he would join the dunk contest and then backing out is one of the things I really blamed Lebron for.

But if this thread is based on the interview Lebron had with Wade it's pretty unfair really, because he didn't say anything really stupid in that interview. And he said a lot of stupid shit in the past. It looks like all the smoke was created by the media out of nothing just to get a story and to make people like OP talk about something.

Seriously, a 13 foot windmill with the power he has would be something I wouldn't mind seeing.

We haven't seen a decent power dunker with some flare in a while. There was Blake, but his performance pissed me off with the jump over the car.

Westbrook should do it. I'd get more hyped for one of his power slams than most of the fancy shit.

Total lack of self awareness. Routinely embarrasses himself in the media. Looses all concept of things he's previously said. This dude has thrown his name in the hat a number of times, only to cowardly pull out. That fear of failure always lingers with this guy to keep him from just competing to win. At this point, while he's still athletic ... it's pointless. The time to do this was 2005 - 2010. A 6 year window where he was still young, and his most freakish athletically. Now? Who cares.

Ofcourse he does, he woulda killed it and we all wanted to see what he could do.

Why i am mad he didnt enter is because he is the best one legged/distance leaper ive ever seen in the NBA, he would randomly do FT dunks in freaking games where his head was still at rim level when he dunked... we didnt have such distance dunkers in the dunkcontest, only Julius Erving came close, but Lebron is even more athletic than him with more tricks up his sleeve, so there would have been some dunks we have not seen before in the dunk contest.... He could have done windmills or some alleyoop or between the legs or something.... from the FT line.... none of that ever happened in the NBA and Lebron could have easily done it....

James White was another distance/one leg leaper guy who could have done it if he was in the NBA in his prime years... but he clearly wasnt when he entered the NBA dunkcontest.... and we all saw what type of FT dunks he did in his prime, all those i mentioned above... Lebron was that type of distance/one leg leaper...

He had nothing to gain and all to lose; if he wins nobody would care and just say he should have won. If he lost then everyone would give him shit for some reason even though the dunk contest doesnt matter. It is a shame though as he probably would have had some nice dunks; he just says he(wade also says the same) is an in game dunker.

Welcome to the pressure of being the best.

Oh wait, he could have done in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 or 2008.

I have to disagree. I used to think the same thing but the more I watch Lebron the more I start to think that he's really doing all this stuff to draw attention. This guy is so much used to be the center of attention that he actually needs the attention at this point. The same thing happens to other famous people. And honestly the last couple of years he's said and done some pretty stupid stuff off the court.
I'm also starting to lose some respect for him as player and person. For example the other day against the Bulls he turned the ball over, didn't get back to defense and his man scored a 3pointer. Instead of apologizing to his team mates for not getting back to play D, he shouts at his own team mate for not helping out or whatever... that's just weak. Same thing with the stupid tweet about Kevin Love.
