How many of you guys would lace up your Nike's and cross him up with your best carry violations and "FOUL!" cries?

I know posters like Jameer and Nick Young are convinced they would. Gus prob worked in the off season and shit and would be nothin but an IT guy in today's era am I rite? He faced guys like Bob "Insurance Salesmen" Pettit, certainly nobody as good as modern ISHers

I did not know how great of a passer he was.

Imagine how dominant the Akron, Ohio frontcourt would be with Gus Johnson, Nate Thurmond and LeBron James. To think he actually played with Nate in high school, we can only imagine how dominant they were.

I played in HS, averaged about 8 points and 11 boards a game playing the 3 in my junior year on varsity(best year I played)

I'm pretty sure I would beat him
I have better handles then he did and I don't carry shit. I also ran a 4.51 in my sophomore year's 40 dash, so i was faster than him as well.

So you're saying ISH posters would beat Gus Johnson in a game of one on one... but it's not fair cause they grew up drinking pepsi and eating cinnamon toast crunch when all Gus had was a diet of actual meat, potatoes, preservative free vegetables and gravy?

You're right dude. Plus ISH posters have access to bally total fitness. All Gus had was the streets of Pre-Civil Rights movement Akron to toughen himself up. He wouldn't stand a chance :(

Gus a 6 foot 6 240lb Hercules shooting dirk fade aways, rainbow corner threes, left handed running hooks and finishing drives with thunderous backboard breaking dunks... blocking Artis Gilmore in the paint, outrebounding Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and stuffing the ball right back down the throats of 6 foot 8 perimeter shooters FACE UP one on one, he's not even blocking them as a "help" defender. Plus he doesn't seem like a guy you want to cross, knocking guys out in the streets, fighting the entire Seattle team ala Willis Reed against the Lakers!?

..several ISH posters think they'd beat him one on one :lol

Gus Johnson is a testament to just how good the players of the 60's really were. Here was a 6-6 230+ beast with the athleticism of Michael Jordan, who possessed excellent skills and a sweet jump shot of 15+ feet....

and yet he was a career 17-13 player with one season in which he eclipsed 20+ ppg (20.7 ppg), and another season in which he averaged 17.1 rpg (which came late in his career.)

How come this guy wasn't hanging 30-20 seasons in the 60's against the "postmen" and "milk delivery drivers" of his era?

I could also use that same argument with Jim Brown, as well. He was a 230 lb brute with track speed. In fact, he was probably physically more talented than Adrian Peterson (and certainly more talented than Tiki Barber.) And while he did put up staggering seasons, none of them were much better than Peterson's (or Barber's) best seasons. How come? How could such a specimen not put up 2500+ yard seasons with 40 TDs against the small, slow, and unathletic players of the 50's and 60's. Hell, how could that man have a critical playoff game in which he rushed for 8 yards on 7 carries (and in fact, he was basically awful in his four career post-season games)?

Then, how about the opposites?

How could Greg Maddux, who could barely hit 90 MPH on the gun, just completely stifle the greatest offensive era in baseball history (the PED era)?

How could a 6-2 Steve Nash win back-to-back MVPs in the Kobe-Shaq-Duncan-Wade-Lebron era?

How could a 6-8 scrawny non-athletic Kevin Love run away with a rpg title, and in only 36 mpg, in a league with Howard and Chandler, and numerous seven-footers?

30-20 seasons? Gus Johnson??? Dude was a fine player but come on man. Only one guy ever did 30-20.
Are you thinking that... because that's Chamberlain's career stat line.... that just anybody can do it?

Just because #13 quit shooting like halfway through his career and still went 30-20 for his entire career ...... that doesn't mean just anybody does that for a whole season. In fact here's the whole list of guys (http://www.basketball-reference.com/play-index/psl_finder.cgi?request=1&match=single&type=totals&per_minute_base=36&per_poss_base=100&lg_id=NBA&is_playoffs=N&year_min=&year_max=&franch_id=&season_start=1&season_end=-1&age_min=0&age_max=99&height_min=0&height_max=99&shoot_hand=&birth_country_is=Y&birth_country=&birth_state=&college_id=&is_active=&debut_yr_nba_start=&debut_yr_nba_end=&debut_yr_aba_start=&debut_yr_aba_end=&is_hof=&is_as=&as_comp=gt&as_val=&award=&pos_is_g=Y&pos_is_gf=Y&pos_is_f=Y&pos_is_fg=Y&pos_is_fc=Y&pos_is_c=Y&pos_is_cf=Y&qual=&c1stat=trb_per_g&c1comp=gt&c1val=20&c2stat=pts_per_g&c2comp=gt&c2val=30&c3stat=&c3comp=gt&c3val=&c4stat=&c4comp=gt&c4val=&c5stat=&c5comp=gt&c6mult=1.0&c6stat=&order_by=player) that ever did it for an entire season.

But...but...but...Gus was playing against 6-0 165 white players who played in the NBA part-time, and worked at 7-Eleven, or the local car-wash, or picked up garbage, full-time.

How could a 6-6 guy, with a vertical that rivaled Jordan's, and the obvious skill-set that Gus had, ...not have been putting up 30-20 seasons against those small, scrawny, nerdy, coke-bottle glasses-wearng, slow, clumsy, clowns who were playing at the time?

For those who doubt Gus Johnson's athletcism...

http://www.cornerclubmoscow.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1&Itemid=2

When Johnson played at Idaho in 1963, he already had a reputation as a leaper of the highest order. One evening at the Corner Club, a local tavern on Main Street in Moscow, Johnson was requested by owner Herm Goetz to display his rare ability to the patrons. The Corner Club was a very modest establishment, converted from a white-stuccoed small chapel in the 1940s with hardwood floors and a beamed ceiling. From a standing start near the bar, Johnson touched a spot on a beam 11'6" (3.505 m) above the floor. This spot was ceremoniously marked with a nail by Goetz, who then proudly proclaimed that anyone who could duplicate the feat could drink for free. A 40-inch (1.016 m) diameter circle was painted on the floor, and both feet had to start inside the circle to ensure a standing start. A full 23 years went by with many attempts at Gus Johnson's Nail, including Bill Walton in the summer of 1984, but there were no successes.

That was until 1986, when the College of Southern Idaho basketball team from Twin Falls stopped in town in January on their way to a game against NIC in Coeur d'Alene. Joey Johnson, a younger brother of then NBA star Dennis Johnson, was brought into the Corner Club for a try. The 6'3" (1.905 m) guard had a 48" (1.219 m) vertical leap and could put his chin on a basketball rim (10 feet (3.048 m)) with a running start.

Johnson laced up his shoes and touched the nail on his first try but was disqualified because he did not start with both feet inside the 40-inch circle. The next attempt came from a legal static start but was just a bit short. On his third try, Johnson grabbed and bent the legendary nail, a landmark event in Vandal sports history. Goetz pulled the nail out of the beam and pounded it back in, a half inch (13 mm) higher.

Joey Johnson you ask?

They asked him to jump, and his response was, "How high?"

Joey Johnson, the former Banning High basketball star, then slam-dunked a basketball through a hoop set at 11 feet, 7 inches--more than a foot-and-a-half over regulation basket height.
