His main point is that he likes the 'religious' aspect of football fandom. Football (or soccer) is the main sport in just about every country that has a CL team, whereas the NFL and arguably the MLB are more popular in the USA. He says this has lead to a division of loyalties as he's a fan of his hometown Knicks, Yankees, Giants and Rangers.
The article is very short and as such doesn't give much to go on, but I got that he wants to make the NBA more popular from it.

My first thought was that surely American Football fandom is up there but then I started thinking about football hooliganism and the things football fans in countries like Turkey and Italy do. Fans throwing flares on he pitch, football firms and the fact that many stadiums have had to install fencing between the pitch and the stands to prevent pitch invasions.

A lot of that is due to the country itself, not the fandom. You don't see rioting in the US like you do in those countries either.

Wtf..Ferguson? You don't have shit on a scale like this in most european/UEFA countries. Certainly not in Italy and not really in Turkey.

Europe got a lot more history when it comes to war between countries. The bitterness and hate sums up in soccer games. Its our alternative to get the anger out without (nearly) killing each other. The NBA is an commercial product where the meaning as a fan does no go so deep. Being a Heat or Mav does not say much about you as a person, while for soccer it can tell a lot about where you come from, what culture and class you are from. So when your team plays it represent a lot more then just another W.

You aren't from Philly where they threw ice/snowballs at the Dallas Cowboys and their coaching staff and Veterans Stadium actually had a makeshift court in it so that they could arrest fans on the spot and charge them. I have witness full on brawls in the stands at Eagles games. Yes, it's quite similar to soccer/football.

Yea, the main difference is that most football clubs started as clubs and not as companies like NBA, NFL, MLB teams. Most of them are 80-100 years old and represent a social group. For example, the biggest rivals in Argentina, Boca and River, Boca started in a poor people club while River started in a rich people club, even today poor people make most of Boca's fans while the rich make most of River's.
In Brazil you have Palmeiras which was formed by italian immigrants and Vasco formed by portuguese immigrants. There are many examples of this, so the teams represent a lot more than "the city" and also that's one of the reasons why there are more then one team per city.

son you need to visit the world. college football NFL, NBA and american rivalries are just a bunch of media hype and dudes looking for fights in bars compared to euro and south american soccer. when I lived back home in NY i didn't know about this but after i've seen it live many times in europe and south america i just accept it for what it is.

Just some examples from some of the best European Fan Groups. If you think college football is close to this, you're retarted.
College football ain't even on the level of best European basketball fans, let alone soccer.. There are people here who consider GSW fans very passionate. If they are passionate, what is this?

As crazy as college rivalries may seem to be, I've walked around the UoA campus wearing ASU gear, and didn't get ONE person to tell me to get the **** off the campus, didn't get ONE dirty look.
Try doing that with major soccer rivalries.

Honestly happy we don't have that level of fanatic behavior. People that take rivalries that seriously need to check an appointment with a psychiatrist

Sure, that extent is too far sometimes.
But not telling someone in the gear of your biggest rivals to get off your school's campus? Or a dirty look?

It's like people don't even consider how bad CFB is as well
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2013/12/02/deadly-shooting-over-alabama-loss-to-auburn/3819905/
A woman charged with killing a fellow Alabama fan after the end of last weekend's Iron Bowl football game was angry that the victim and others didn't seem upset over the Crimson Tide's loss to archrival Auburn, said the sister of the slain woman.Adrian Laroze Briskey, 28, was charged Monday with murder in the killing of 36-year-old Michelle Shepherd.
Now of course you don't hear stories like a ref being decapitated, but the US isn't a third world country like the rest of South America. There are also a shit ton of more soccer clubs/games around the world than there are big time CFB programs, which leads to the incidences being more frequent.

There's some batshit crazy in college rivalries. Look up the News Observer/NCSU vs UNC. They are basically trying to take down the entire university.

One incident.
You can never wear an opposing rival teams jersey, let alone, in full fledged gear, walk around their campus/training grounds/etc. without, at the least, being told to get the **** off the campus.

basketball could also have a champions league:
* have one tournament for the top teams in the north and south american leagues like the NBA, canadian league, brazilian league, etc.
* have another tournament for the top teams in the european leagues like greece, turkey, spain, etc.
* then the winner of each league plays each other to decide who the true world champion of basketball is
make it something like only the top 3 or 5 teams of each league qualify. sure, 99% of the time an NBA team will win it but we're all more excited for the non-nba 1% team that does win it

Soccer is the most boring sport ever created. If those Euro's had the NBA or NFL over there nobody would give a shit about soccer. It has no actual competition so everyone gravitates to it.

Not even close...Football has over a BILLION fans worldwide, whereas the United States of America has a population of around 300 million. Even if every person in the States watched (they don't), NFL would only have 1/3 the fans.

would NBA fans really rather see ****in' besiktas or w/e play than other NBA teams? hell no
