I'll just quote what I've said on that other thread:
Dunk contest started in the NBA when Jordan came into the league... Showboating, flashy dunking and so on, wasn't nearly as big as nowadays, not even close.
Dunking was used more as a way to put the ball in the hoop than anything else, as opposed to nowadays when you got kids practicing all of that stuff since early on, fantasizing about being in the contest, young players practicing dunking more than fundamentals - you can even say Jordan contributed to it.
Overall, Jordan was a better athlete than Lavine and Zach can't dunk on games (on people) like MJ did... Plus, as players, Lavine won't ever even be close to what Michael was.
You have Michael practicing his dunking and whatnot, the same way he practiced his fundamentals since an early age, getting in dunk contests since even before the NBA, really preparing and putting in effort before the contest... and he would've beaten someone like Lavine in a dunk contest.
Not to mention all the dunks that've been done, all the shit you can easily see up on youtube and whatnot, very different from what you had back in the day.
With that said, Lavine had one of the best performances in a dunk contest ever (could've been better at the end though) but you gotta put those things into context, can't be talking shit like that :facepalm
Dudes like MJ, Erving, Nique or Carter would absolutely shit on Lavine in a NBA game, would dunk on his face or on his teammates more than the other way around... I can also spill that out, makes more sense to say than everything you've just said...
****in dumb kids :facepalm Always spilling some ignorant shit, trying to troll and spark some controversy

I'm not trying to disrespect MJ, Nique, Doc, and the dunking greats because they clearly helped elevate it to new levels, but what is your quote even supposed to say? All I'm reading are the most obvious facts possible, that Lavine is nowhere near Jordan, Dr J, etc as an actual basketball player, and that he's not the in-game dunker they were. We all know this.
But please address the dunk contest. Would Lavine not steal the show if he was in a dunk contest with the guys mentioned? I keep bringing it up because I have to, but if Lavine did the FT line windmill, what could anyone else possibly do? Or forget that even, if Lavine did one of his first two dunks last night..what is the response? We talk about time and context, but please look at it objectively.

That's just the evolution of the dunk contest, in 5-10 years someone will top Lavine.
I still think Vince is tops though. LaVine had some crazy dunks but didn't bring the power that Vince did.

Yup. And it's not all about power anyways. The thing that really got me out of my seat was how ****ing effortless it all was to him. Dude threw down the most beautiful behind the back I've ever seen, pretty much flawless, and he looked like he wasn't even trying. This is why I think he's gonna go down as the GOAT contest dunker, as filthy as his performance was he's got more to show. I don't think we're appreciating how sick it is for him to be doing this at 19 years old.

Judge them in a vacuum? You NEVER do that when judging players across eras, yet let's do it when it comes to the dunk contest, huh? Why not call Mikan a top15 player, then?
Judging them in a vacuum - in the dunk contests - we're mostly paying attention to scores/points and who won the most, they never competed against one another...
And, let me get this straight, they were better in-game dunkers because they were better players? Okay then

Of course Lavine would kill those guys in a dunk contest because he grew up watching them. It's called evolution. Jordan grew up watching Doc and VC grew up watching Jordan. It doesn't make anyone better it's just how things evolve. If any of the great Dunkers from the past were born when Lavine was born they would be doing totally insane stuff now. It's just like shooting threes. Bird was a tremendous shooter but the 3pt shit was a novelty then. Now it is a specialty. And of the great shooters in history would all have been much better three point shooters for their career if the three point shot was the priority it is today. There's nothing to be mad about or anything.

The Mount Rushmore of dunking to me is Doc, Nique, MJ, and Vince. They were all great players in general for starters. But most importantly, they had the EPIC combination of great dunks in a game AND the legendary dunk contest shit too. Lavine's in game dunk catalog has to really step up for me to consider him on the level of the legends I mentioned.
If we are talking strictly dunk contest then sure he can beat anybody. Dude is a freak no doubt about it! I just wanna see his in game dunk catalog (which NEEDS to involve dunking on players in traffic) pick up.

As far as I'm concerned the dunk contest and all the "contests" are stupid. I wanna see the shit in a game. When Lavine puts his nuts in someone's faces like KJ or MJ or Nique or Kemp or VC, he's just gonna be some dude who does great dunks in dunk contests. That being said, I really like Lavine and think he has a ton of potential. It's up to him to realize that potential.

What separated guys like Doc, Nique, and MJ from the other great scorers was the fact that they could go over the top of defense and DOMINATE! The heat they could put on a defense AND deflate a team's confidence was special.
So even if your defense is designed to keep them out of the lane, THEY COULD STILL go over the top and dominate. Plus they were skilled in other areas of scoring, so they were gonna get their points no matter what. So ya Lavine is the better dunk contest dunker. But OVERALL, he ain't close to guys like Doc, Nique, MJ, Vince, Thompson, T Mac, etc. UNTIL a defense is totally scared of u, u can't really compare to those kind of guys.

I don't even think Lavine is a better dunker than Jordan. Jordan did a lot more than just go between the legs three or four times. Lavine's a nice dunker, but he's not ****ing with Jordan at all. Jordan did the free throw line dunk, Jordan did the reverse sideways leaning shit, and Jordan even did a 360 in the dunk contest that people seems not to want to talk about. All time though Vince is better than all hands down. Lavine's dunks were impressive, but I'm not even sure if he's a better dunker than prime Jason Richardson.

Lavine can windmill from the FT line. Lmao at "he's not ****ing with Jordan at all" and mentioning a FT line dunk and a 360 as if Lavine wouldn't make that stuff look pedestrian.

Lavine's dunks were FILTHY, especially the behind the back shit... but he got a bit repetitive with the through the legs dunk over and over. Lacked some creativity and variety of past great dunkers. I hope he comes back and does it again and shows some versatility.

Yes I would agree.
And if those Sprite professional dunkers (Air up there and stuff) got in the dunk contest, they would be better too.
And Lavine is pretty much a professional dunker....we've all been sitting here waiting for him to get in the league for a year or two already just to see him in the dunk contest.
For an actual good nba player though, MJ and them were still GOAT dunkers, and it makes for a much better story when the super-dunker is actually good enough to play in meaningful nba games.

Lavine is an elite dunker, but does anyone think guys like MJ and Nique couldn't pull off that stuff back in the day if it was known?
That windmill free throw dunk was nice as hell, but he was about a foot...maybe more...in front of the line.
I mentioned this in another post, but MJ didn't even train or prep for dunk contests. He just showed up and made shit up on the fly. These guys nowadays prep and train for this like they do dribbling and shooting drills.
Don't get me wrong. Today's dunks > yesterday's dunks in terms of skill level. But that's because more people are training for this stuff. With youtube, all the kids see the latest dunks and they try to emulate them. Back then, you only saw these dunks during contests.

J/k
His dunks were great, and some were better than some of MJ's not gonna front.
But the biggest difference and one thing that was irking me was today's dunker's inability to dunk with the ball in their hands. Almost all of their dunks came off bounces.
And naturally creativity will evolve.
Even tho Lavine mos def can jump high and had some dunks nicer than what MJ did, Mj still has some dunks on him that nobody in that dunk contest did, and perhaps aren't capable of doing.
The Space Jam dunk (dunk no.1 by Lavine) is a dunk that MJ did with the ball, took off from further distance and still jumped high enough to duck his head and put his arm through the rim. Again, WITH THE BALL IN HAND.
MJ also did his dunks while 'dribbling' the ball, something many dunkers couldn't do. Most dunkers run with the ball or in last night's case, toss it up and then jump to dunk which honestly facilitates the dunk itself.
Oh well... big props to Lavine, and yeah some of his dunks were better... but not all.
