Consensus no.1? There really is no consensus.

But of all the anime shows often mentioned as some of the greatest, Cowboy Bebop is probably the one with the most broad appeal. It's a well-rounded show. Great animation, great music, compelling episodes and also a compelling overarching story, good voice acting. Very well balanced, even if it doesn't pull you in completely you can probably appreciate a lot about it still.

Generally it's held in higher regard by non anime fans than it is by true anime fans. Which is a good thing, because true anime fans tend to have the shittiest taste ever.

First season of neo genesis evangelion was the best IMO... the movie/finale was terrible and loaded with Christian references but if they ended that series well it had the capacity to be the best all time. In other words Michael Jordan.

funny thing is i could shit on every anime u put ahead of Naruto for different reasons INCLUDING Bepop like i already did with its outdated animation, simplistic and drab storylines, and various other reasons. i like Bepop, especially its world style, but its a joke to me how much people worship it when its got some glaring issues. reminds me of how much peoplle suck One Pieces dikk too when that animation is pretty horrible and feels so outdated too. even when they have dark undertones they barely feel dark like naruto....

Bebop was released in 1998. If Shipudden with the budget they have in 2015 doesn't have better animation on it's best scenes than that would be pathetic. Bebop has good animation.
I can point out the good animation in Naruto, rest of the time it's just mediocre.
