The problem Kobe has right know is that this Lakers organization has not established an identity post Jerry Buss/Phil Jackson. To me that's the biggest difference between the Spurs and everyone else in the NBA, those guys have stability that really no other team in pro sports other than maybe the Patriots in the NFL have enjoyed. Jury is still out on Jim/Jenny Buss and Byron Scott.

The Lakers are going to need some major pieces for him to contend again and in most certainty Kobe would need to also take more of a supporting role and stop acting like is 2006, that ship has sailed

Kobe comparing his selfish/cancerous style of play to the Spurs, an organization built on class, integrity, and unselfishness has to rank up there with one of the stupidest things ANY athlete has ever said.

I don't think he's delusional. If anything Kobe is smart in terms of how to play along in the media. He isn't going to come out and say "hey I took the money and am just playing out my career until it's over. We aren't contending anytime while I'm here"

I think we know they're fully rebuilding at this point. Kobe is on a farewell tour.

I think he is just saying the right think. He will retire after next season and there is no reason to think the Lakers will be good by then.

Kobe's shown the willingness to adapt his game. He could still be effective in a system like the Spurs. The problem is that the Lakers have shown a complete ineptitude when it comes to building something even resembling a NBA team.

:wtf: Wasn't Kobe leading the league in shot attempts prior to getting hurt? He's had stretches over the years where he will stop shooting and try to pad assist stats, but he has never proved that he can sustain that kind of play style. He needs the ball in his hands constantly to have any positive effect in a game, which is why he would be terrible on a team like the Spurs.

Bruh Hill, Nash, Young, Boozer and Lin currently take up 37 million in cap space. 37 million! Horrible allocation of assets. There are a lot of GM's that could better allocate 37 million across better players and/or make better use of their cap space.

if Randle is the real deal and the Lakers get a perennial all-star in the up-coming draft along with a good FA like Dragic or Gasol there's no reason why they can't be contenders.

Emmanuel Mudiya
Kobe Bryant / Nick Young
Veteran FA
Julius Randle
Marc Gasol

would be a dirty team, Bryant and Gasol leadership, Mudiya and Randle with the young potential, Nick Young bringing scoring off the bench, all they need is a 3 and D guy at SF.

Agreed. And I'm curious to see what comes of the short contracts and what they actually aim for come time to sign players.

Because at some point in time they need to decide on a direction to head in. Can't sign 1 year deals forever. Especially overpaying dudes like Hill. Etc

It's definitely a possibility if they put the right team around him.

Jim needs to get the **** out the way and let Mitch operate. Bring in an actual playmaker and a solid big man in the middle, make Kobe work in the post and you have a title contender.

Unfortunately the Lakers have painted themselves into a corner that I don't see them getting out of for the next 3-5 years. They've put themselves into the position where only a big name free agent will turn them into a legitimate team instead of being the missing piece on a contender.

There should have been a smooth transition from the contending years until now. Expect 1 year contracts for the next couple years because the team has tunnel vision when it comes to free agents.
