At this point Amare is a huge upgrade over Charlie V (who can get hot every now and than) and Dwight Powell/Greg Smith.

If Amare can provide bursts where he does that shitty spin move for lay ups and fouls drawn while being surrounded by good shooters it's not that bad a move imo. There were a number of games where he looked ok and still can finish off spoon feeds which in Dallas with Rondo, JJ and Parsons there should be quiet a few for him.

I don't really like STAT, but the Mavs desperately needed some depth. Amare might be a shit defender, but at least he'll give you something on offense.

The Mavs have a good record, but they've been really disappointing against the top teams. At least they're consistent though, and beating the teams they should beat. Regardless, I'm keeping my eye on these guys come playoff time. I don't think I'd go as far as to call them a legit contender, but their offense is lethal and they are extremely well coached. They might be able to make a run if they get hot, ala 2011. Dirk obviously isn't the same, but now they have Ellis, Parsons, and they got Chandler back. Also, Rondo brings the same kind of defensive intensity that Kidd brought in 2011, although Kidd was a good 3 pt shooter that year, unlike Rondo.

I see one site has them at 20-1, 6th best odds for a championship behind SA, LAC, OKC, CHI, and CLE.

This simply isn't true and I don't know where you are getting it from. Dallas was 40 to 1 heading into the season. Mind you, they were viewed as a good bet by a few on here because of their talent, coaching, and management, but were never close to the favourites in anyone's eyes. At best they were an interesting dark horse.

Only after their hot start and the Rondo trade did any talk emerge of them being favourites or championship contenders.

This move serves to aid in their big man problem and add some needed scoring off the bench. They still need a wing off the bench who can shoot the 3 at a good clip but bringing in Amar'e makes them better right away. Their being able to compete in the West is going to rely on Rondo working in the offense. If they can get their offensive rhythm going the defense (top 10 with Rondo in the lineup) should take care of itself.
