View Full Version : So what is the greatest Hip Hop Album of All time?

From top to bottom this is the GREATEST ALBUM EVER made in hip hop...
Supreme Clientele - GhostFace Killah
There may not be 1 song that is like oh that one is a top 10 song ever but from top to bottom NOT 1 SONG on this album could be rated UNDER a 7 out of 10.
Not 1 hip hop album I can remember where I could say every song is good to great.

Nas- Illmatic. It's timeless.
However, I have to check out the full Gangstarr- Moment of Truth album sometime soon. I really like Guru's rhymes and poetic ability.

I'm a big fan of OC's "Word...Life" album. Something about that album, and I'm not entirely sure what it is, but it doesn't get nearly enough respect.
Nas with Illmatic is another one for me for obvious reasons.
Mos Def with Black on Both Sides.
Kendrick with GKMC is definitely up there as an all time great, and may just be the best rap album ever. If it isn't, it is definitely the most seamless and best flowing rap album ever. I don't even think there is room for debate on that one.
Lastly, for me, Big Pun with Capital Punishment. I just love Pun's style and lyricism. People harp on about Biggie, but Pun was just as good if not better lyrically, as well as his flow.
If I had to pick out of those five it'd be a tie between GKMC and Capital Punishment.

Agree with Big Pun. BOBS by Mos Def for me is a classic but there are way too many tracks (2-3) that I thought were fillers.

Tough call. Best candidates are All Eyez on Me, Ready to Die, Illmatic,The Marshall Mathers LP,E.Eternal 1999, Aquemini,Liquid Swordz,Paid in Full and either The College Dropout or My Beatiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
I don't know if this makes sense, but I think in 10 years we might well say that Watch the Throne is the GOAT. 2 all time greats at the top of their game on an album that is innovative and brilliantly produced.

Best album has to have every song be at least good, an album where you aren't really tempted to click the >> button for the next song. It's almost impossible to do, but imo, illmatic is that album. Doesn't mean it's my personal favorite or that I bump it on the reg, but it is the most well done album ever.

Different answers for different people. I have a couple, and one of them would be MOTM2, but almost no one on this forum would probably agree with that. Comes down to taste.
Dark twisted fantasy
Watching movies with the sound off
The adventures of Bobby Ray
Good Kidd, Maad City
Mr. Porter
Rolling Papers
There are probably some I'm forgetting, and on a couple of these I couldn't do in one sitting..I love Travis Porter, but I can only listen to so much trap till I change it up to a smoker album (wiz/mac) or nostalgic album (ye/BoB).
It's all based upon our personal opinions and judgement of music.

let me try to explain this to you slowly
1) I dont think this thread will have a definite awnser of what the greates hip hop album of all time is. The whole point of the thread was to find this out. but its impossible because people like different things
2) Guess what. I'm one of those people. And IMO Illmatic is the best album of all time. Without a doubt
3) I'm also not a fan of ranking albums in general. And my "list" would be a mess after Illmatic. But i still didnt wanna pass up an opportunity to discuss hip hop with the dudes here. So i decided to post my opinion, even if i think its impossible to find one definite answer

Take Care by Drake is the greatest Hip Hop Album of all time.
Haters will deny it but it was a classic in all of music, not just Hip Hop
No one, not 2pac, Nas, or biggie could ever match the versatility of Drake
they all had their strengths, but they also had major weak spots.
Drake has an all around game, a complete innovative rapper.

Hell yeah, don't sleep on the lone star state.
Hate to break it to you guys, but Illmatic has become outdated. Rap has evolved and Nas has a weak flow on that album. It is still great, a classic no doubt.. but time has proven Reasonable Doubt to be a better album. It sounds a lot more modern. Nas has that old 90s sounding flow on there, the whole... Then I went to the corner store... I needed cigarettes but I was too poor! Just flowing too simply.

Hip Hip changed a lot from 94 to 96 (plua, it was probably mostly recorded in 92-93 I'm guessing?)
People like Heavy D and Rakim and CL Smooth were still relevant in 94 when Illmatic dropped.
Jay Z had the new era of East Coast rappers to take from like Nas, Raekwon & Ghostface, GZA, Mobb Deep, ect.

It is like.. George Mikan paved the way for Bill Russell. But you can never say that Mikan was better than Russell if they were both on the same court. It makes sense that your era will define your sound, but that cannot be an excuse when you are judging the quality of an album 20 years later. Illmatic sounds outdated in sections. It still has some really good songs, and the beats are strong. But I couldnt even put it over Ghetto Fabolous at this point, to be honest.

Thing is 99% of Hip-Hop from in 92-93 will sound outdated. It's not just Nas. Shit, Black Sheep and 3rd Bass was still around, lol. A lot happened between 94-96 for J-Zee's debut to sound more modern than Nas.

I hear you. And Nas does not sound THAT outdated, certainly not compared to like.. Will Smith in the 80s. It is just a touch, but it is noticeable. And point taken that Jay-z wouldnt have sounded modern without those prior influences.
