There were only 4 perimeter players to win MVP:

Cousy, Oscar, Dr J and Bird

There were 9 (separate) centers who won.

Since then, there have been 9 (separate) perimeter players and three centers. It almost completely reversed.

3p shot has high value-> it creates spacing -> this favors players with superior quickness/ shooting/penetration -> ballhandling supersized/superathletic/superskilled perimeter players benefit most from this ->

jordan/lebron/kobe/magic/thomas/wade/iverson/nash/etc

not rocket science, just a consequence of rules favoring a breed of player over another. If people consider that this rule degrades the game of basketball, consider it as an economic measure taken by the NBA to produce stars that are more marketable (highlight dunks, crossovers, greater appeal to normal sized population)

It really changed in 2005 when there were rule changes that benefited perimeter players. Suddenly, Nash, Kobe, LeBron, Rose, and Durant have won MVP, and it looks like a non-big will win this year as well. It isn't surprising to see a couple of those guys win, but not all of them, and there have been literally 0 post players to win the award since then. Davis is the only guy I see with a chance in the near future.

To be fair, it was an absolute travesty that Dwight Howard didn't win in 2011. He was ABSOLUTELY the MVP of the league.

it was actually really contested, lebron had a great year (but took some serious media heat:oldlol: ), dirk was very underrated that year (proved it in the PO too), kobe had a good RS and durant was really underrated.

Rose winning it was the weakest MVP since i've been watching ball ( late 80s/early 90s)

davis just confirms it, his game is more similar to that of a an oversized wing than to that of a post player.

Bob Petitt won MVP twice as a forward.

And the NBA was around before they started giving out the MVP award.
