Miami Heat All-Star Chris Bosh has been admitted to a Miami-area hospital to undergo tests on his lungs, according to a team spokesman via reports. Bosh had previously dealt with abdominal discomfort during All-Star Weekend but continued with his planned vacation after the festivities and events in New York.

Joseph Goodman of the Miami Herald has more details:

Bosh was “under the weather” on Wednesday when he reported to practice, according to Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, and team trainers sent Bosh to see a doctor. He did not attend practice Thursday and was instead admitted to the hospital

Initial tests on Bosh, 30, were inconclusive, according to a team spokesman. An independent source confirmed for the Miami Herald that the initial tests were on Bosh’s lungs. [...]

While in New York over the weekend for the All-Star Game, Bosh complained of pain in his side near his rib cage. He then traveled to Haiti during Carnival with his wife, Adrienne, and Dwyane Wade and Wade’s wife, actress Gabrielle Union.

Asked on Thursday after practice whether Bosh was sick in Haiti, Wade said, “I don’t know if he was sick. I’m not a doctor. I just know he wasn’t feeling good. He wasn’t coughing or throwing up, but he just wasn’t feeling good. So I don’t know when it happened. It could have happened in New York.”

A diagnosis of Bosh's condition has not yet been revealed, if one exists at all. He won Saturday night's Shooting Stars event for the third year in a row played 11 minutes in Sunday's All-Star Game without appearing in excessive pain, although it's unclear if he simply toughed it out or saw his condition worsen in the days since.

The Heat face the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Friday. It is not yet known if Bosh will be able to participate, but the team figures to introduce new point guard Goran Dragic into the lineup.

"Pulmonary embolism is when one or more pulmonary arteries in your lungs become blocked. In most cases, pulmonary embolism is caused by blood clots that travel to the lungs from the legs or rarely other parts of the body (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT).

Because pulmonary embolism almost always occurs in conjunction with deep vein thrombosis, some doctors refer to the two conditions together as venous thromboembolism (VTE)."

this sounds terrible :wtf:

I wish Bosh good health, it would be unfortunate if the Heat season is completely written off with Bosh out.

Blood clots can potentially be a serious health risk. Basketball reasons aside, hopefully Chris Bosh will have a safe and speedy recovery.

This is sad news. Crazy what can happen in just a single non-basketball playing day.

I'm hoping a speedy recovery for Bosh. From the reports I'm reading, it seems like his long-term prognosis is good, so his body should be basketball ready come next season or so.

That means Miami just needs to showcase what Dragic, Whiteside, and Wade can do for the rest of the season. I'm okay with reloading next season with a healthy McBob and Bosh if we can develop some chemistry this season with those three guys.

Blood clots can be serious and even fatal if not caught in time. My father was hospitalized last year for multiple blood clots in his lungs. Fortunately they are treatable, but the recovery from the treatment takes several months, irrespective of the person's fitness level. If I'm not mistaken, blood clots typically start in the leg(s) and then move up to the lungs. Bosh could be on blood thinners for quite some time if this is indeed the case. Obviously I'm not a doctor, so I do not know how this will impact his ability to continue to play professional basketball. I pray that he pulls through and recovers.

chazzy
02-20-2015, 12:31 PM
He'll miss this year while on blood thinners, but this shouldn't affect him long term if there's no bigger underlying cause. Long flights and his height are definitely factors.

Yeah, one of my co-worker's wife had knee surgery and they found a blood clot shortly after.

Many different things can cause blood clots, unfortunately. IIRC around 250,000 people die a year from blood clots.

Many different things can cause blood clots. Pulmonary blood clots are potentially life threatening though and need to be dealt with asap. What can happen is that a blood cloot in the leg (called deep vein thrombosis) can get dislodged and make its up the veins into the heart, and once it goes out of the heart, it can get stuck in one of the arteries that supply the lungs (called pulmonary embolism). Hard to know without any more details what exactly has happened, but it sounds quite serious.
