Who lifts on insidehoops?? What kind of routines have you done? Has anyone tried stronglifts (http://stronglifts.com/5x5/)?
In highschool I was a bench and bicep tard. Had a serious case of Johnny Bravo with my long, once big arms and chest. Along with those glorious chicken Legs
Setup at my house blows...No room for a bench/power cage. So I can only squat what I can military press onto my shoulders, deadlift, bent over rows, and military press
But thankfully I got a membership recently, really looking forward to following stronglifts routine better

If you're doing 5x5 squat it might best to do 1x5 or 2x5 for deadlift. You can get away doing 5x5 deadlift for a bit if you're a beginner...But once you get to intermediate it might be too much

Nice, I'm bookmarking these standards. It's the squatting every workout that worries me a bit, I guess I could just go lighter than normal though. I'm usually toast for at least a couple days after leg day.
According to this I am: *Assuming these are all 10+ rep training weights, not 2 set maxes or something.
Press: Intermediate
Bench Press: Intermediate-Advanced
Squat: Novice-Intermediate
Deadlift: Not quite Novice (Clearly lagging behind here, but I do these rarely)
I don't even know how to properly power clean/snatch.

After I fractured my sternum in 2010 I became a lazy stoner for about 4 years. Had chicken legs before then...So you could imagine where I was after the couch lock. But thankfully I gain "fast" and was able to become a "novice" deadlifter in a little over a month and a half. Feels great. Need to be strong if I want to become a firefighter

Ya I lift. I mean, I don't wanna be sitting on my ass everyday, posting on ISH :D
I was lazy as hell when I first joined ISH. Good god, I felt like I would just post a billion times everyday. A little less than 3-4 months ago, I decided to join a gym again. Honestly felt like a fat worthless loser after posting so much and being on the computer/phone/tv non-stop. Since I joined the gym, I've felt so much better. Been eating right, and working out a lot. Just a big boost for my ego.

Lifting is such a waste of time.
You guys doing that Egyptian slave routine...for fun. Ridiculous.
Walk a decent amount everyday + eat real non processed food = a much healthier and longer life than by destroying your bodies with that constant stress of demanding manual labor.
Don't get me wrong...you lifters probably will look "better" but even that is debateable. Girls don't really care as long as you aren't fat or super skinny. Handsome is handsome. Maybe you care how guys think you look :confusedshrug:

It's all about perception and values my friend
Something that is a waste of time to you, might not be for someone else. Some guys don't limit their journey in life based on what girls think, do or care. If you limit your personal development and progression based on primal and instinctive attractions for individually thinking beings, you will never achieve greatness in life. You must have a vision my friend. A vision of yourself, and you must strive. Strive every day to reach that vision, whatever it is. Just don't let the acceptance of others hold you back.

This answer actually had me backpedalin....that was deep lol.
That's coo - i dig that. Working out for "fun" is legit. Getting huge for "health" reasons is bogus. Same way I kill myself playing hoops. I know that I do it for fun and that it more than likely is bad for my body in the long run. A quick 20 minute, controlled, intense workout + walking is better for my health than a 3 hour grueling session of hoops.

You're completely right. I just borrowed some of the concepts while I was using my unsatisfactory setup that limits what I can do. I'm 185 and started deadlifting with 115, even though it felt as light as baby shit. Wanted to make sure my form was perfect. Then did it 3 days a week like how they have you do squats, going up 5 every time (10 max on a couple of occasions because of being impatient). Beggining of December I started, by January 4th(was wrong about the date in another post) could do a 5x5 with 235, with 1 1/2 minute breaks between sets. If I were to do as many reps as I could in a single set it'd be about 10-15..But I've never done it because your form gets sloppy with that nonsense. It's baby weight, but I'm happy with the progress. Even if Ive been forced to stall since because of the bar at home not being able to hold anymore weight

Okay, buyt don't be one of those noobs at the gym doing 'arm days'. Waste of time. Compound exercises and do some arm work at the very end when you're already toast. Your tricep day should become your chest/shoulder day. Do what you want, but after you've worked out for years you're going to figure this out anyway.

This is basically what I do. Dedicating a day to arms only is a waste, since its a relatively easy workout. Now I sprinkle my arm work across the rest of my workouts, when I'm done with the heavy stuff.

Yeah, it's hard for me to justify going to the gym just to do arms when I can throw in biceps with a back day and triceps with a chest day or something like that. I'd rather just spend that day as a cardio day by going on a run or finding a pick up game if I feel the need to workout.

No arms or neck.
What about abs?
Compound exercises are obviously great but you need to isolate biceps, triceps, forearms and even your neck for overall aesthetic purposes.
Especially if you don't have a naturally thick looking bicep. Deadlifts and rows won't get the job done.
Compound workouts + isolation workouts = strength/aesthetics
Why on Earth you wouldn't be isolating your biceps and triceps is beyond me.

triceps wont grow just from doing chest.. not even close.. you need to hit them hard and heavy.. biceps.. depends on the person.. for some people doing back is enough (assuming you are doing pullups, chinups, rows and not using machines).. i think you should still add another exercise to isolate them

Agreed on the triceps, I just do them at the end of chest day. I'm not saying what I do is perfect and everyone is different. I wish I did shoulders more, they're a weak link but I don't want to miss chest days because of them. I wish I did deadlifts more to, but I just don't like them and they interfere with back and leg days too much. I've hurt my wrists doing bicep curls so I just go really light or don't bother, but you make good points.

Chest, shoulders, and triceps go great together.
Back and biceps go great together as well. Nothing gets the juices flowing like attempting a personal record on the deadlift. It's my favorite exercise.
Legs deserve their agonizingly torturous day. I finally got into using knee wraps for my heaviest lifts and they've given my leg workouts a massive boost.

In the end there's no point being an elitist in regards to lifting weights. I hear those compound dweebs on their high horses saying that machines and any isolation/bodybuilding movement is completely un-functional and useless. Then there's the wannabe bodybuilders who are basing their training on some magazine steroid junkie who just got done jabbing 3ccs of test into their ass.
At the end of the day every exercise is effective for its own purpose. I personally like to lift heavy compounds and mix it in with high volume accessories... I enjoy doing isolations... They have their purpose. No point hating on others for how they train. Gains will pretty much be made regardless... Progressive overload is king though... Law of deminishing returns

They do. Do chest first and kill it. Then move onto shoulders which should have some burn, but still be alright and kill those. Now do a few sets for your dead triceps if you can, workout over. Arm days are just something a high school kid does thinking he'll get big guns.
Back and bi's go best together. A good back workout should finish your biceps as they'll give out before your powerful back does. Hell, my back never gives out, it's always my biceps and forearms that can't go anymore.
Legs are simple, but don't do calf raises until the very end of the workout.
I work out the big muscles and make the little ones keep up.

Just curious how many of you actually are able to use your strength?
How many of you can...
1. Serve a tennis ball (out of 3 tries) at over 75 mph?
2. Pitch a strike (out of 3 tries) over 40 mph
3. Throw a regulation size football over 35 yards (3 tries)?
4. Hit a golf ball over 200 yards consistently?
5. Make 4/10 on three pointers consistently (practicing)?
6. Vertical jump over 35 inches?
7. Box?
8. MMA/wrestle/karate/etc?
I don't lift but can do 7 out of 8 on there (can't hit a golf ball at all).

Most guys who lift are ****ing terrible athletes
My gym is terrible... 90% are no leg training chest and arm lads and the small percentage who do train legs in any form are usually terrible at it AKA quarter squats, rounded deadlifts or just use the leg press/machines. Then there's that 1% of guys who actually know what they're doing.
Got these curls and bench lords who walk around like their tough as **** but deep down they know I'd drop them in seconds and proceed to sit my huge glutes on their heads.
Essentially people who lift for all the wrong reasons (AKA look good for the girls) they want to LOOK strong but they don't want to LIFT heavy..

So true to me I'd feel like a fraud if I were in that boat.
The worst are the ones who are on gear and have the same mentality.. just to look good. I remember a guy from high school who was obviously on the juice in the last year or two of school... He probs thought he was a god at the time... Never trained the big three outside of the bench... Not even 2 years later he was looking just the same as he was before he ever picked up a barbell... Classic example of someone who should never touch that shit... A few killer cycles, look jacked for a little, then kill your natural test, balls are ****ed up, got gyno forming, balding prematurely, etc, all in the name of looking good to probably impress girls who really don't care these days.

On the gear while in high school. Ouch.

I have a few professional bodybuilders at my gym. They have signed pictures of themselves up on the walls and are extremely full of themselves. They're absolutely on steroids and lift an impossible amount of weight. I get annoyed when non-gym goers think I use steroids because I look decently strong. I'm guessing the lazy guys who use roids would look like me and the ones that work their asses off on roids look like the guys I mentioned at my gym. I still don't have much respect for either, but the roiders I see are monsters for sure.

More guys take steroids than you think. Its just that most of them either dont know what they're doing or train like wussies (or both), so they dont get much from the drugs.

The hell is your point?
THOSE. ARE. SKILLS.
SKILLS.
WHICH REQUIRE REPETITION AND PRACTICE TO MASTER.
And what's your other point about excessive stress on the body.
Dude, bodybuilders lived to be in their 70s. Jack Lalanne 90s. etc. etc.
I understand that you are curbing our thinking to integrate the parameters of long term effects, cost-benefit ratio, and practicality, and good on you for that, but that other scenario 1800 cals and light activity? What the fukkkk.
