Mean Streets > Taxi Driver > Raging Bull
Those are his all time great movies (I'd put all three in my top 50).
Then I'd say No Direction Home and My Voyage to Italy, though those are both documentaries.

The first half of Casino is enjoyable. The second half goes downhill - Sharon Stone's constant screeching in unbearable.

I really think Goodfellas is an overrated movie. It is excellent in its portrayal of the mob scene in NY in the 1970's and is very entertaining, but ultimately the movie is very shallow with limited suspense, terribly direction, and the resolution is flat out bad IMO.
I think people get way too lost in the mob portion of the movie and don't realize that the content is very limited.

The mob is barely heard of now so it is hard to relate to. They probably still exist but not as high profile as before.

I'm not talking about the direction in terms of Scorcese, I'm talking about the actual plot of the film.
The movie is not the masterpiece that Raging Bull is. Raging Bull is one of the GOAT movies of the last century, yet many people rank Goodfellas ahead of it which is laughable. It also has the single best acting performance in history from De Niro

So, Cape Fear is your favorite movie of his, but you think its inferior to others?
I've ran across this favorite/best logic quite a few times... I don't get it tbh.

You enjoy a movie more but realize it's inferior to another in terms of content/drama/etc. Essentially one is a movie while another is appreciated like a piece of fine art.
A good example of this is exactly why a movie like The Dark Knight was not nominated for best picture. Many people consider it to be the most entertaining movie of 2008, but it had NO business being in contention for non-effects/editing awards. Ledger was only nominated/won because of his untimely death.

What do you mean by shallow?
What do you mean by limited?
You think that movie was terribly directed? :wtf: Why do directors all around the world love that movie? Why did the actors do their best work in that movie?
and the resolution is flat out bad IMO.
you do understand it's based on a true story right? Would you have preferred that Henry Hill grabbed a rocket launcher and said say hello to my little friend?
And the resolution and the whole tying up of the story was done brilliantly.

What Goodfellas does is strip away the mythology surrounding the New York City mob and show us how life was really like for a typical mid-level wise guy like Henry Hill. It's fascinating in that regard-- easily the best film on organized crime ever made.

The Godfather is the GOAT. The Godfather 2 is the 2nd best. Goodfellas is the 3rd best. But... Goodfellas is still my favorite mob movie bar none. Heck I even like American Gangster. Goodfellas and American Gangster were easier to follow IMO. I had to watch The Godfathers twice to fully comprehend everything that happened.

GoodFellas > The Godfathers
GF feels true to life. The Godfathers, while great, are drenched in excessive mythology. I'm surprised Coppola didn't write in that Michael personally put Castro in power to do his bidding.

Eh, if you were a big mob boss I think The Godfather wasn't that excessive. Remember Goodfellas, they were like low tier gangsters in terms of the whole NYC mob.

Godfather was straight up mythology.
Henry Hill was a low level guy, but the guy played by Paul Sorvino was a high level guy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Vario) and his life wasn't really at that different than Henry Hill's he just made more money and had more power.

That scene wasn't in the script. It happened to Joe Pesci when he was a singer in mob-run nightclubs.

One my favorite scenes when is when Joe Pesci doesn't get made and De Niro loses it. Ray Liotta doesn't know whether to touch him or not. Fantastic details.

Goodfellas is a more accurate depiction of Italian-American organized crime and probably the best one ever. I do prefer the Godfather films but they weren't really about organized crime so much as it used that topic to explore other themes

I haven't watched many of his best films so I really can't have a good opinion on this topic...
I will say this though... I love the Departed. It's quite a long movie. It's 2 and a half hours and it honestly feels like it's a whole lot less. The pace is quite quick and honestly feel not a minute was wasted. It's the type of movie where you're not feeling dragged through the mud, having to bore through it. Some 2 1/2 hour+ movies can be torture to sit through... Not the Departed
I'm not sure (as I haven't seen enough Scorcese films) if this is his directing style? I call the Departed a masterpiece, a lot of quality actors, a distinct style (Irish... accents and what not) and a thrilling 2nd half that essentially peaks right at the end.

You should watch Goodfellas. That movie flies by. He works with a great, great editor and he usually gets very good performances so every minute is easy to watch.
In terms of his directing style, he's known for scoring his movies with rock songs (Everybody does it now.) He will edit the scene to the rhythm of a particular song. Sometimes he will even play that song on set so the actors get a sense of how to move. This is from one his earliest movies

I've often said I prefer Casino to Goodfellas. And I think Raging Bull is probably his best work.
But the truth is is that nothing, perhaps in the history of cinema, is as eminently watchable as Goodfellas. It's somehow both dense and light at the same time. Casino is more complex, but doesn't flow quite as easily. Bull is an incredibly heavy watch. And Taxi Driver I'm sure I've answered quickly as my favorite movie ever, but it's a much slower build to a dramatic payoff, which makes it harder to watch on the fly.
There's a reason Goodfellas is on cable seemingly somewhere every single goddamned day. It's great as a whole piece of art. But each scene is so well crafted, and has it's own little arc, it's own theme, and the pacing is so perfect, that's it's just incredibly watchable. Everything pops and snaps so crisply. The dialogue. The plot moves. The characters are constantly in an exaggerated state of some kind of other. It's always either The Best of Times, or The Worst of Times.
It may be too common of an answer, but there's a reason. It's Goodfellas.

I said Mean Streets (surprised no one else has mentioned it, tbh), Taxi Driver and Raging Bull were his all time classic films, but I think The King of Comedy comes really close too.
Judging by the poor Box Office performance ($2,536,242), I'd definitely say more people need to see it! The Rupert Pumpkin character definitely has some kind of connection to the Bickle character.
