View Full Version : Kevin Durant sidelined again
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant underwent a minor procedure to help reduce pain and discomfort in his surgically repaired right foot, according to Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti.
Durant will be re-evaluated in a week. The expectation is he will return to play in the regular season.
"There's no new injury that's been created," Presti said. "It's just a matter of discomfort."
Durant underwent a procedure in October to repair a Jones fracture in his right foot. According to Presti, the fracture has fully healed as expected, but a screw inserted at the fifth metatarsal during the procedure is rubbing against another bone in another area, causing soreness and discomfort. To help alleviate the pain, Durant had a new screw inserted. He began experiencing pain two weeks ago and has tried to play through it, but because it has increased, the Thunder looked at other alternatives.
Durant has missed 28 games this season after missing only 16 total in the first seven years of his career. He missed the opening six weeks recovering from the original surgery, two weeks in December because of a right ankle sprain, then four games in January because of a sprained left big toe.
Durant, 26, is averaging 25.4 points, 6.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 27 games this season.

Incompetent surgeons. Dumbasses knew the screw would rub against the bone.
Of course he will be in discomfort. It's amazing he was even to play this year with something like that going on.
I just want him healthy in the playoffs so the Thunder can kick the Warriors' ass

Why rush him back? Unless Spurs hit an L streak, which I don't see happening, they are looking at 8th regardless.

He should take on the Westbrook role from last year. Let Russ dominate and get the team into the playoffs, and then Durant dominates come playoffs. He wasn't his normal self in the playoffs last year because he was worn down from his amazing MVP regular season. He will be healed and hopefully ready to go come playoff time. Let Russ handle the reigns of the team while he gets that rest and primed and ready to go come playoffs.
Get it done KD (I believe it's already starting to happen) :applause:

You people are so ignorant. Durant did not reinjure anything, nor is he a major risk to do so. The screw that was put in place did not fit his bone structure correctly and as a result it has been rubbing at the base of his 5th metatarsal. As a result of the irritation, they've removed the screw and replaced it with a more narrow screw. This is seen is roughly 25% of ALL Jones fractures that are treated with screw fixation in athletes. This is due to the canal, where the screw is inserted, being bowed and very narrow.
Summary: Durant is fine, he doesn't have another injury/reinjury, idiots. The screw hurt his foot, so they removed it. He will be fine to play in a few weeks once he recovers from his minor surgery.

The screw, typically, is left in the patient for life unless it causes discomfort. The 1st surgery generally has a recover time of 2 months, but with a pro athlete that can be reduced due to their training/fitness regimen.
As for reinjury, if Durant's foot fully healed(which I believe it had, otherwise he wouldn't be allowed to play due to its high potential for reinjury prior to proper calcification) then the bone is actually stronger than it was prior to the injury. Thus this is an injury that is virtually nonexistent in terms of reinjury potential assuming Durant's foot fully healed when he 1st returned.

That is ridiculous, but alas this surgery was due to the irritation of the screw fixation and not the bone itself. I have no idea why they would bring him back prior to full calcification of the bone due to the high propensity of re-fracture when it isn't fully healed.
But whatever, it's fully healed by now. It's been 4 months. 14 weeks is the max that fracture takes to heal

It is unfortunate that OKC's front office wasn't willing to pay the additional costs for the right size screw without that head on it or else this never would have happened. Cheap a$$ Clay Bennett didn't want to pay for the more expensive screw.

If it was healed then they would come out and say it.
"The good news is that the fracture itself is healing excellently and from what the doctors conveyed to us we continue to feel very good about the prognosis moving forward," Presti said. "But in the short term, as he's continued to have this discomfort we wanted to determine the best way to alleviate it while still promoting the healing of the initial injury."

I'm just making the assumption based on what my surgeon told me when I had knee surgery, he just told me modern surgical screws aren't usually removed since they dissolve over time (I think he even mentioned it takes years)
edit-
“The next big things in orthopedic surgery are bio-absorbable screws and plates,” say’s orthopedic surgeon Dr. Kane Anderson with Durango Orthopedics. These screws and plates dissolve over time and are absorbed into the body so you don’t have to go your whole life with a piece of metal in your arm
