Women see that shade as blue due to high levels of estrogen.

Blue and black.

My cousin saw light blue and brown/gold. My mom saw white and gold. My sister saw white and gold. My grandma saw white and dark brown. My grandpa saw blue and black.

This is what the dress looks like on the lady that wore it.

The picture above it looks blue and black. But the original is definitely white and gold to me. (Although the white has like a tint of blue in it).

Maybe it is just different people looking at different photos? :confusedshrug:

It has something to do with how our brains perceive the light in the picture.

No. It depends on lighting almost entirely (angle you're viewing it from, color calibration of your monitor aswell, your eyesight). You're not wrong if you see brown, gold, white, etc.

The correct answer is Black and Blue.

http://assets2.vice.com/images/content-images/2015/02/27/heres-whats-happening-with-that-dress-with-the-confusing-colors-882-body-image-1424998588.jpg

That one I see as black and blue, the other one, not so much.

And from what I understand, the sample colors pulled off with the picker tool on photoshop have nothing to do with how your monitor is calibrated, so that would lead us to conclude that it is infact white/light blue and gold/brown in the original photo, no?

When I first saw the pic on fb, it was obviously white and gold, no question. I went back to show my sister and was shocked that I saw it as being blue and black...I started searching for a white/gold pic to no avail, it pissed me tf off. And then, after I was done making myself a protein shake, I glance at the screen to see a white and gold dress. Stupid rods in my eyes...

There is a right answer, and it is Black and Blue. Chosen posted a great Vice article about it:

No it isn't

If you want to see both colors on the original picture of the dress

if you see white and gold... to see black and blue, make a telescope with your hands, make sure the hole is very small and has minimal light exposure aka like a dslr camera with shutter speed... look at the dress through the telescope with one eye (other eye closed) zoom in on the dress while minimizing light exposure to your eye... If you can't see it try blinking really fast

I think it probably has more to do with lighting when the picture was taken than anything.

Look at this vine of a similar dress:

Obviously, the lighting has something to do with it, but that's not the point.

How can 2 different people look at the exact same picture and see completely different colors? THAT'S the point. It's not color blindness..it has to with our how our minds perceive the color. Something to do with the brain compensating due to the shadows and light, so it changes the color. It's odd....even the experts on the subject were saying this is pretty rare occurrence.

That's why it's fascinating. I see white and gold, but I fully understand the dress is black and blue, and the picture is giving off a weird perception. The point is...why isn't EVERYONE seeing white and gold.

The designer of this dress, if they haven't OD'ed yet, will soon be making a lot of money I feel.

if i look directly at it, its clearly white and gold, but if i look at it from the corner of my eye, its black and blue/purple.

My guess would be it has something to do with the lighting of whatever monitor/phone you're viewing the picture from.

If someone showed you this picture and your life depended on guessing the right colors, you would die. :lol

Just because it isn't life and death doesn't make it less embarrassing to see white/gold instead of black/blue. Your brain is completely flawed

:facepalm No that's not it. Two people in the same room looking at the dress picture can see completely different colors.

Guys...color isn't real. Light is real. Color is not. Color is a way our eyes makes sense of the world. That's why color can change and our perception of color changes based on many factors.

http://todayilearned.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/optical-illusion-with-colors.jpg

In picture, what color is top block and what color is bottom block?

Once you made your guess, put your finger horizontally between the two blocks.

If I tell my brain it's blue and black, then I can definitely see it. Also, when I tilt the laptop screen back a little I can see it.

At first glance though, blue and brown. My mom sees white and gold.

The people who see that blue as white are f*cking lying pieces of crap. Are you scumbags getting paid by the dress maker to drum up sales?

The black I'll buy. It's all washed out and sorta brownish. But the blue? If you really see that blue as white, you're either lying or your brain doesn't fully function.

From an article on AOL, it pretty much sums up the issue with the color:

"The answer, says Hardiman-McCartney, is that every viewer seeing either set of colors is right. He says the exceptional bar-code style of the dress, combined with the strongly yellow-toned back-lighting in the one photo, provides the brain a rare chance to "choose" which of the dress' two primary colors should be seen in detail.

Those who subconsciously seek detail in the many horizontal black lines convert them to a golden hue, so the blue disappears into a blown-out white, he said. Others whose brains focus on the blue part of the dress see the photo as the black-and-blue reality.

"There's no correct way to perceive this photograph. It sits right on the cusp, or balance, of how we perceive the color of a subject versus the surrounding area," he said. "And this color consistency illusion that we're experiencing doesn't mean there's anything wrong with your eyes. It just shows how your brain chooses to see the image, to process this luminescence confusion."
