View Full Version : What is it with white people and Eminem?

Springsteen

I just wanna say before anyone calls me racist or any dumb shit, I have Eminem in my top 10 rappers, and consider him possibly the best freestyler of all-time.

I'm a freshman in college, and the kid I'm rooming with is white. We get into a few arguments like any normal roommates (girls in the room, staying up later while the other is trying to sleep, etc.) but besides that, we get along fine enough and share laughs. But nothing infuriates me more than his musical selection.

He says he's a "big hip-hop fan", nevermind the fact he's blasting cozy Starbucks music Elton John and Bruce Springsteen while we play 2K. He talks his head off about how Eminem is the "greatest rapper ever", and when he has control of the music he's usually playing Em's music more times than not. I have no problem with this, but when's it my turn to play some music he's always, ALWAYS bitching about how "awful" it sounds. He can't name a single Tupac or Biggie album. When I'm playing Run the Jewels, Migos, or even Nas; he puts headphones in like I'm playing some garbage. But if it's Eminem, he'll listen start to finish, even gratingly singing along. If he's listening to any other rap, it's usually the mainstream stuff you hear on the radio. I can't tell you how many times he's played "Only One" by Kanye, but when I was hype as fuark listening to "All Day" when Ye dropped it, he bitched about how awful it sounded and put his headphones in. Even worse, his other white friends chime in with his opinions when they stop by, which tells me they have about the same taste in music.

This brings me to my point about Eminem. He is obviously one of the greatest rappers of all time, with GOAT lyrical talent. But combined with his skin color, it opened a bit of a bigger market to him with people who are hesitant to listen to certain musicians due to their skin color. Maybe this whole experience with my roommate is just giving me some negative perceptions, but I can't help but feel this way.

Opinions?

I think white people can understand Eminem.

I've heard a lot of people say that they don't understand how you can like rap/hip hop with all of the negativity in it... drugs, gang violence... it's like DOOD ITS NOT UR LIFE.

For me, it doesn't matter. I never lived any lives of artists and that never bothered me. I appreciate the art and the feeling behind it. If I can imagine it, it makes sense to me.

But eminiem is like an emo rapper half the time.

Eminem is just good. He is funny, he writes with a lot of emotion. He tells stories. As a kid in 1999, I loved My Name Is before I knew he was white. The Slim Shady LP went from being hilarious to strange to interesting to scary, and every track blew you away with just how good he was. White or black, in 1999 it was ridiculous and was the first time I realized how much I loved rap music.

I liked other rap too, but I dont find it as relateable. I listened to 50 cent as a teenager (what teenager didnt in 2002?) but I am not a drug dealer who kills people. I am a person who has done drugs, had problems with a girlfriend, etc. Eminem covers more relateable territory to your average fan. And when his songs are unrelateable, they are interesting, funny, tell great stories, or have amazing linguistic properties. Eminems use of multis, clever rhymes, and insane statements are entertaining to listen to, regardless of his skin color.

I think he is just one of the greatest ever to pick up a mic. Your roommate might be a little close minded, but I think most rappers cannot hold a candle to Eminems entire catalog of songs.

Nas has some great songs, but who can relate to most of it? He also isnt as clever as Eminem, raps with less emotion in his voice, etc etc. Dont get me wrong, I like Nas a lot. But I just think, to me, it is pretty clear that Eminem is on a different level just as a song writer. And that goes for most rappers.

Every famous rapper in the history of famous rappers has made most of their money off white people. Unless you think guys like Kanye and Jay Z are selling millions of albums to ~12% of the population.

I am white, I know more about Hip Hop from 87-95 than almost anyone else, but not a huge Eminem fan.

I read constantly he is top 5 top 10 and I can respect that, he is a fabulous writer and has his own voice, but not really my thing. Not into depression Hip Hop, I'd rather grab my dick and talk about how awesome I am.

Eminem has some crazy good stuff, but he also has songs that arent very good, but a certain segment of white kids like them anyway because hes Eminem. Theyll like anything he puts out because they are, quite literally, his stans, pun intended. To bring it back to basketball, its similar to the kobe fanboys who genuinely dont see with their eyes anything but incredible performances from Kobe. Even when he goes 1/14. They only see it as incredible, killer instinct assassin will to win etc, insert cliche. They have a strong devotion to a person and by devoutly liking whatever he does, they feel "closer" to him like a small female deer clinging to her alpha.

Lets be real. MOST people have shit taste in music like they have shit taste in everything. You can convince them to like pretty much anything if you correlate being a fan of a song/artist/genre to a particular image or lifestyle or you attach it to a personality they admire.

Kids who like Eminem and no other hip hop are pretty much your typical miller-lite-male phillistines who are not qualified to discuss shit about shit, they are shit, hit the bricks pal and beat it cuz they are going OUT!

Edit: want to reiterate Im not saying theres anything wron with liking Eminem or if hes your favorite rapper. But if thats all you listen to as far as rap, youre not really even qualified to talk about how he compares to anyone else, and you probably just have simple-minded mainstream taste in everything.

It's white people who don't usually listen rap or don't listen it at all, apart from hearing mainstream stuff here and there. They usually dislike the songs about gangs, hood, money, bitches and that's what mainstream songs are/were mostly about.

Offtopic but I kinda lost a little respect for Em after the whole 'Kim' situation. Not the song per se, but the fact that he performed it while acting the song out on a blow-up doll while she was in the audience; and had promised not to play the song to her before the show. Then she obviously did the suicide attempt in the bathtub.

Doesn't discredit his status in hip-hop fame, and other rappers probably have done worse, but I kinda look at him differently after reading about it.

Yes.. Nas spits a lot of hard shit.. when he himself never did anything. just grew up around those that may have. Eminem is witty as hell and is just way more clever and funny.. you will literally laugh at some of the shit he says. you know he knows he's exxagerating and isn't being completly serious. That's why I like him. Most rappers take themselves so seriously.. and most are straight phonies in what they speak relative to what they do. That's why eminem is so respected.. he just says what he does with comedic element added.

Nice post OP. Glad you're having the typical freshman college experience. I have nothing to add but this takes me back.

My fat mexican roommate (I'm white) listened to some absolutely shitty mariachi music. He liked my rock music (Jimi, SRV etc.) but I could just not get into his shithouse mariachi music.

He'd practice sometimes and some of the guys in the hall would hear him and run by and yell, "ay yayayayaya." Man it'd really piss him off. Funny when I heard about it though...shit roommate. Too bad I had no balls back then to tell him off.

The next year we both stayed on campus again but in a different dorm (got the same dorm, same floor). He got stuck with he RA.

Karma.

Eminem has the respect of his peers.. every single one. They all mention him among the GOATS, or even the GOAT (Game), I'm a fan of his, so I have no problem with him at the top spot, I have him there, but also not with someone else (he needs to be top 10 though).

Now, I'm white, love his music, but I hate these people who only listen to Em and discredit everyone else... I wrote about it in the Kendrick Lamar thread, I discussed this with a dude on YouTube (I said to him "bet you're white" and he said "yeah but has nothing to do with it") and he just shitted on Kendrick... said (paraphrasing): "Jay Z Kendrick *someone else* can **** off, nowhere near Em"

He called Eminem STILL the best rapper alive (he isn't, anymore)... said Kendrick is just like any other black who talks about racism, gang violence, etc... just ughhhh stuff.

Em clearly hasn't been the same since his return, and he's also somewhat turned into emo pop music, generated towards white teenagers. Maybe not on purpose, but who cares.

Your roommate sounds like a dork who is trying to be cool. Most white hip-hop enthusiasts enjoy a large and vast selection of rap.

Edit: Damn, never even knew that people felt this way about Eminem. Didn't know he had any haters out there. Eye opening. But as far as his peers in the music industry he's got their respect and is widely considered one of th e GOATS

Nobody questions his skill, but his style/subject matter dont appeal to a lot of people who prefer a more urban vibe in their hip hop.

Its be like if Al Pacino did romantic comedies. People would still respect him for what he's done before and is capable of, doesnt mean theyd like the material hes putting out in the romcom genre.

There was a time when I was very disappointed with Em and thought he was done. I remember when I was in military school and didn't get to listen to music. We took a small trip and turned on the radio, "smack that" came on and I almost cried, I kid you not, it was horrible, I was so sad. Lol

But I fuhcking love MMLP2 and Shady XV. The Billy Squier samples, the old-school sort of unorthodox sound. "Rap God"

I can understand people not enjoying his music if it's not their taste. I just think if you like rap you gotta atleast enjoy a song or 2 off his last few albums.

Lol. Don't act like you were listening to eminem in 1996. Unless you were 1 of the 1,000 local people in Detroit who bought his cassette tape, the first you ever heard of him was the slim shady lp.

I remember exactly when I first heard of him. I'm probably the last person here who's "hip hop history" you should question. I remember when I was around 16, there were these ambiguous "EMINEM" ads campaign in the source and knowing it was the same guy that had previously been in the unsigned hype column. This was before the time where you could just go look up an artist on the Internet. The only way to hear them was to either buy their album, know a friend who has it or hear it on the radio.

I don't know how old you are, but those of us who were there at the time know that when eminem first came out, it was as a dark comedy rapper. But you want to act like 1,000 cassette tapes he sold in Detroit is "the real" eminem debut.

No I don't... I don't care which album you're adressing, admittedly, Infinite has a different tune to it than the Slim Shady LP, in which left out alot of his frustration about the lack of success from Infinte.

SS LP: Powerful songs with rage, humorism (yes, effortless too) and a dark theme. Probably his best balance of humor and dark themes, but he introduced Slim Shady to us.

He pretty much created Slim Shady for the darker, evil self of his.. and that was Slim Shady LP. He balanced out the fun part, with more serious thoughts.

BTW: Em on how he came up with it:

"I was takin' a shit. I swear to God. And the ****in' name just popped into my head. Then I started thinkin' of twenty million things that rhymed with it".

Pretty sure songs like Nobody's Iller, Scary Movie, Low Down Dirty etc came out before Slim Shady LP.

I think that's what's being referred to here.

Drake is DEFINITELY better than Em. If You're Reading This It's Too Late shits on Em's whole ****ing career.

I am white and think there are maybe 2-3 decent Eminem tracks.

Black Thought is GOAT.
