View Full Version : How good would Lebron be in the 90's?
Im Still Ballin
02-28-2015, 11:30 PM
As we all know, the 90's were the easiest era for superstars/ISO play. The illegal defense rules ensured this. Imagine an ISO clear-out on the wing, Lebron is a walking mismatch, and because the illegal defense rules made sure you couldn't half-ass a double team, and you couldn't double off-ball Lebron would be hitting people for open shots all night.
If Lebron played during the same time as MJ and throughout the 90's, it would most likely be another Bird v Magic era.
LBJ would still be killing the fastbreak, and tearing apart in the halfcourt, getting lots of free throws because rotations were notoriously slow (illegal defense rules)
35ppg with 9 assists is realistic for 90's Bron

The two big changes from today and the 90's are:
1) The importance of the three point game.
2) Globalization.
The 90's saw these changes begin but they did not fully come into fruition until the 2000's. Today's game features the best players from all corners of the globe and is played differently due to defenses and the frequency and proficiency of three point shooters today. The 1994 Spurs had zero foreign players; the 2014 Spurs were majority foreign, at least in their rotation.

You are a moron.
A zone isn't something thats cut and dry like an obvious 2-3/3-2 or 1-3-1 like when you're playing 2k or that you might see more commonly in the college game. It can even be (Zone) to describe the subtle shading and covering floor (usually 6-10 ft from the hoop) 3 defenders will be playing man to man, while the other 2 will be sagging off, covering floor to immobilize a GOAT threat like Lebron, causing him to shoot jumpers all night.

And we know that J.J. Barea gave him trouble in the '11 Finals.
The REAL bottom line, though, is this...the players of TODAY, are NO better than the players of 90's.
Not bigger, not stronger, not faster, and no more skilled.
So the answer is this...Lebron would have been as good in the 90's, as he is today.

They actually are bigger today. See the average size of NBA players at http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_stats.html .
Average height/weight by year
2015: 6'7" 218
2010: 6'7" 219
2005: 6'7" 218
2000: 6'7" 216
1995: 6'7" 212
1990: 6'7" 208
1985: 6'7" 207
1980: 6'6" 204
From 1960-1980 it is in the same weight range. The one change is an increase in height in 1963 to 6'6" from 6'5". Weight remained consistent from the 60's through the 80's but began to increase in the 90's and then again in the 2000's until leveling off. Suffice it to say, though, the average player today weighs 10 pounds more than his 1990 counterpart. So you are correct that 60's players were similar in size to those of subsequent decades, including the halcyon 80's and early 90's but it also is true 21st century players are bigger than those in 20th century. This is funny information. The people who dismiss the 60's often hold up the 80's and 90's as the golden era but the gaps between player sizes from those periods and the 60's are minimal and yet there is a gap to today's maligned era versus the halcyon days of the 80's and early 90's.

Next.
That's right, zones are created to stop dribble penetration, that's the main goal. To beat zones, good shooting, passing and cutting are key, don't act dumb. A player that dribbles too much (like LeBron) will struggle against zones. A player like MJ wouldn't be affected as much because he's a great off ball player, makes decisions really fast and most importantly, has one of the best midrange games in NBA history. Go ahead and give MJ open looks :oldlol: LeBron is still inconsistent with his jumper, sometimes he's lights out but other times can't hit the side of a barn.
Just because zones have been effective against James doesn't mean they'll be effective against Jordan :oldlol:

I am on your side. It is the 80's and 90's which those who diminish the 60's cite as the golden era and what they contrast the 60's unfavorably to. Using their logic it is the 21st century that features bigger athletes and thus the 2000's and 2010's>90's>80's=70's=60's.

Or even a top 40 all-time player like Ewing and a bunch of role players. Or a team whose best player was a top 10-15 player with role players (90's Indiana resembled the recent Pacers with George=Miller). LeBron would dominate in the 90's like he has done in his era.

Once again,
You're mainly speaking in hypothetical. When Jordan had most of his success (90's) zones were outlawed, illegal defense ensured this. This rule not only ensured no zones, it also forced players to stay on their man, you couldn't double someone off-ball, if your opponent was at the 3 point line, you had to be atleast above the free throw line, and you had to fully commit to the double team, even a slight hesitation as to effectively cover floor space to stop penetration it was deemed illegal defense.
Oh and last but not least. The 3 seconds in the key rule WAS still there in the 90's, it was just classified under the illegal defense rule scheme. In now a days players can stay as long as they want in the key given they are within armslength of their opponent... You can also double team someone off ball now, so you can effectively double a player in the key and it is legal, which would be done to protect the key from dribble penetration.
When Jordan did face zone, his success dwindled. He faced zone in college, and lost. He was terrible in his stint with the Wizards, he lived and died off his midrange, hence why he'd be so inconsistent. This obviously never amounted to success. And if someone can help me out here, the 80's had zones? or less strenuous illegal defense rules? Jordan was a career loser before the 90's. 1-9 in the playoffs.

TheMan, LeBron in the 90's would make LeBron vs. MJ like Magic vs. Bird. MJ would get the better of it overall (especially in terms of team success) but LeBron would have his years. Teams with Ewing, Malone, Drexler, Miller, Price et al. as their best players were perennial contenders in the 90's. You don't think 1) a team with LeBron could get over the hump 2) especially if LeBron is not replacing but joining one of those players on solid teams?

To elaborate on my post, I think the only years LeBron would be equal to and/or possibly better than MJ would be during the 1996 and 1998 seasons. Basically Mike's worst full seasons among that decade.

Jordan saw the same things. Double teams, triple teams, shading help defense, soft zones, it isn't a new thing in the league. Jordan is also a quick decision maker, better slasher off the rock, and a superior catch / shoot player. Against true zones he'd be fine. Couple all that along with his era having more physicality on the perimeter, at the rim, and true shot blocking center patrolling the paint in a more congested lane than there is today.

Catch and shoot (spot up) is arguable. Lebron is a VERY good spot up shooter. Especially from 3. It's just that we don't see it enough because he is the primary ball handler, and his opponents rarely sag off him. That's the thing about LeBron, he's built like a tank but inside he's soft. He hates getting in the trenches, thats why he doesn't play the post even though I believe he would be more unstoppable if he played mostly in the low block. He'd rather be on the perimeter because he doesn't really like the physical play.
I would love to see guys like Rodman, Oakley, Zo, Mahorn, KMalone, AMason (RIP), XMan, Laimbeer, McHale etc drop him hard as he goes for a dunk, get in his grill and challenge him. They don't do that anymore. Remember how shook LeBron looked when lil' Jason Terry talked shit to Bron's face? Imagine how those other mean SOBs would do Bran

No.
It's just that we don't see it enough because he is the primary ball handler, and his opponents rarely sag off him
Excuse making. If Jordan hadn't retired from basketball to play baseball, he could of had 8 rings...That's true, but it didn't happen.
More physicality would benefit Lebron more than ANY other perimeter player in league history.
You mean just because of his size? :hammerhead: Guys were able to guage direction of your drives with hand checking. Players with poor fundamentals/footwork would struggle because defenders can easily pick which way you are going.
and we haven't got to the mental aspect of 90s basketball either. Lebron wouldn't cope with guys getting in his face and telling him he's a p.ssy
1. How is that excuse making? It's the reality of the situation. Most likely, but the thought still doesn't cover up Michael's guilt of getting his father killed from his gambling woes.
2. Yes just because of his size you moron. Physicality is not 'fundamentals and footwork' There's not much finesse in physicality. Lebron would use his stiff arm he uses now, only 10 times as violent.

You said he failed at the college level, he won an NCAA chip, made the game winner whether it was Worthy's team or not. :confusedshrug:

Which meant he was not the focal of the team.
When he was? They lost? Now that may be because of they missed the extra talent and depth that Worthy offered, but we are talking about all time greats here (Lebron/Jordan)
