I don't think I've ever been so hyped for a video game. This seriously has GOAT potential. Who knows who'll win GOTY with Witcher, Fallout, Bloodborne and this, but I think in the long run, this will be the best game of them all.
I still haven't pre-ordered though. Might do it today.

Sucks for me. I have three months off, and it ends next Friday. Back to school.
Hopefully I don't have much homework the first couple weeks. I also will have a week left on my gym membership, so I don't know how much time I'll get playing this.
What a shitty release date, to be quite honest.

To be honest, I'm not as excited.
I've seen some gameplay and it just feels too slow.
GTA V seemed way better and far more hyped up and it didn't exactly live up to expectations. I'd be shocked if this game is better than Witcher 3.
Witcher 3 to me is the best current gen video game to date.
Uncharted 4 will blow every game known to men out of the water.

97/100
I see they called it the Game of the Year, and also said it's the best stealth game of all time. "There is no argument; MGS:V The Phantom Pain is the game of year and most likely game of the generation. For the last time, Hideo Kojima has managed to pull it off AGAIN. He is the man that sold the world."
Here are their Pros/Cons:
Pros:
Complete freedom, hundreds of possibilities and options. Almost infinite.
Graphics and sound are sublime. Never have experienced anything like it.
Cons:
Story doesn't have the same thrill as the other entries, and does not close the story in a satisfactory manner.
Poor Spanish translation.
They said they completed the main story in 40 hours and have only 50% completion.
Maybe there's another Peace Walker type ending...?
To compare, the same site ranked Witcher 3 at 95/100, and its highest rated game ever is Smash Bros. Wii U at 97/100 (which is now tied with this game).
If Metal Gear Online is decent at all, I can see myself playing this for a LONG time.

How the **** can you give a game a 97 if the story isn't absolutely perfect.
Sounds like another GTA IV and GTA V title.
Overrated as shit.
The fact that both of those games are rated above San Andreas. :facepalm
I'll probably buy this game later in September though.
I do enjoy Metal Gear but I'm not its biggest fan.

San Andreas was rich with content and a great story.
What the **** are you smoking.
You think GTA 4 was better or GTA V?
What the hell was the point of GTA V story anyways?
It was fun but just seemed way too short for the ambitious approach they were aiming to take. In the end, it was all about 3 random dudes coming together to make money? There was literally no climax to the game.
Did any of the previous MGS games receive a 97 from that website though?
Story is extremely important, especially for a game like Metal Gear.

MGS V seems to be very rich with content. Also, I'd take any MGS story over any GTA story. Out of the GTAs, Vice City is better than San Andreas, but MGS is better than them all in the story department.
Nobody's saying the story is bad in this game, it's just this one reviewer saying it doesn't have the best story out of MGS like some overhyped it to have. Also, he said it doesn't feel like a proper conclusion to the MGS series, but it was never intended to be the conclusion. Kojima has been wanting to hand off MGS to another director/writer and stay in a producer role for a long time now. Now that he's left Konami altogether, they're going to just hand the series over to any old director and keep making MGS games until people stop buying them. It may end with Kojima to us, but there's going to be an MGS 6, a shitty MGS arcade mobile game, MGS remasters, MGS 7, and so on. That series is all Konami has left.

I'm definitely getting this game, but I don't want to get all hyped up about it like I did for GTA V. There's no doubt that MGS has way better story than any GTA; only Uncharted 2 and TLOU and a few others like Zelda are on that level of greatness.
I do like Vice City's better than any of the GTA as well; although San Andreas is easily my favorite game because of its content.
I don't usually like stealth type games but I've played most of the MGS mostly because of its epic characters and story.
I doubt I'll get this before mid-September as I'll be busy with Madden 2016.

85? It was 17/20. You can't go multiplying it to add up to 100! Doesn't work like that.
I saw that yesterday, but the reviewer is from a notoriously unreliable French website (they gave Watch_Dogs 18/20), and said he's never played an MGS game before in his life. As well, he probably didn't even listen to the tapes, which is why he would have been confused by the story.
Also saw this on Reddit:
A quick FYI, In France you can't even really rely on JeuxVideo.com (biggest VG media in France) which could be considered as an IGN. It's been discussed that they may have been offered compensations in exchange of high scores. And their journalists aren't fully impartial, some really take sides and that is not the way to do journalism.
The Spanish source seems to be more reliable from looking at all of its other scores.

But ambitious projects were rather disappointing as of late (Watch Dogs & GTA V).

Yeah, I didn't really enjoy GTA V as much as I wanted to. The story was bland and not very interesting compared to GTA IV, San Andreas and Vice City, and GTA Online didn't really appeal to me. I just found it to be repetitive and boring.
I think I might do a playthrough of the series soon.
Watch_Dogs was made by Ubisoft, so that was understandable. Fvck Ubisoft.
I think Kojima, as a video game maker, is on another level to everyone else. I can't really see any projects of his flopping.

IGN & GameSpot gave it 100%.
GameTrailers gave it 93%.
These 3 websites don't just hand out perfect scores; that's very impressive.
This game might actually beat out The Witcher 3 it seems.

the gamespot review is a really great read.
Every fan of Metal Gear has their favorite game in the series. For some, it's the unique gameplay quirks, memorable set pieces, or specific plot points that dictate their adoration for one game over another. When defining the best Metal Gear game, things get trickier, but with The Phantom Pain, that problem is finally resolved. There has never been a game in the series with such depth to its gameplay, or so much volume in content. The best elements from the past games are here, and the new open-world gameplay adds more to love on top. When it comes to storytelling, there has never been a Metal Gear game that's so consistent in tone, daring in subject matter, and so captivating in presentation. The Phantom Pain may be a contender for one of the best action games ever made, but is undoubtedly the best Metal Gear game there is.
hype!

I can't think of a single game off the top of my head that received a perfect score from both GameSpot and IGN; besides maybe GTA V.
Last of Us got 80% from GameSpot.
That's pretty bad ass; but I am still not sure if it's my type of game.
I think I'll get too bored from the slow paced gameplay.

I drifted away from this series over the last half decade or so. I was infatuated with the old " ! " over the head era of these games. I loved the stealth elements. But the story wasn't something that ever really interested me, and as the series traced the story to increasingly weird places, and spent so much of the games giving exposition into that story, the less I became interested, and the next thing you knew I was out.
But this was intriguing to me from the get go. I enjoy open world. And I enjoy stealth, although usually a light stealth, and third person duck and cover shooting and adventure. Those are my favorite types of games. And this sounds like it has a bit of everything.
I read GameInformer's review this morning. They were pumped, and came in at 9.25. This could be a rare buy for me that's not a preorder. Just based on the strength of the reviews and the description of the game play. The last game I think I bought like that was Mordor, and I never got into it. But before that it was Arkham Asylum, and I went on to love that series. So who knows.
There's that demo/preview whatever that came out last year. If you like that, then this should be crack cocaine for you and must by because it's going to crap all over that.

Just a heads up, there's a "secret" ending in this game that you have to earn. That's kind of bullshit imo, but apparently it's a really amazing ending.

I don't know actually, i'm not aware when the game comes out so it didn't occur to me that it was strange he had it. I'll ask and let you know. Probably in the Bronx. I know when GTA came out he drove out there to get it a few days early. Stores in manhattan (mom and pop) and Brooklyn put shit out a day early at the most.

I might trade in Madden 16 and get this game.
For some reason just am not into sports game lately.
Only game that's on my mind is MLB The Show 15. But honestly, it's easily the best out of the bunch with FIFA 2nd and NBA 3rd.
NHL & Madden need major re-hauling efforts. They used to be the cream of the crop in terms of sports game but have hit the bottom of the barrel the last decade or so. :facepalm

EA games have too many buttons. There idea to revamp passing including MORE button pressing. It's not intuitive so it's not as much fun. They need to redo the controls and they never well.
I never liked MLB the Show but I play a lot of power pro/baseball spirits. They are japanese games (so no US rosters) but the gameplay is ridiculous, takes a big crap on any american baseball game. Deep but fun.

Gameplay is very repetitive
Story is linear and underwhelming
I think the only reason why people rated this so high is because of the cool features like being able to attach a balloon to anything, having a sidekick dog, or having an iPod in game to play music
It's a visually pretty game, and jampacked with content
But at the core of the game, it is hollow

It's everything I hoped it would be. I'm up to mission 5 and did a side op. I've been pretty smooth so far. I'm getting in and out of places without being detected, but I know it will probably get harder.
People weren't kidding about Big Boss not speaking much. Dude barely talks, but it's badass when he finally does say something. Kiefer Sutherland kills it.
Also, make sure you listen to the tapes. There are some important details in them. They automatically unlock after completing missions.

Nah it's just an extended demo to help players get to grips with the game just jump right into PP.

Solid game, but not worth the hype.

The game has really hit it's stride. Just done mission 15 and the enemies are now adapting to my playing style. Helmets, flashlights and Night vision are kitted out on most guards which means I'm going to have to have some of my guys take out the supply train.
I also have a dog which is invaluable! Locates not just enemies but also plants and other animals.
This is shaping up to be the best stealth game to date.

Make sure you do this if you're interested in the story:
- do the side ops where you rescue former motherbase soldiers
- develop medical platform
- After building the medical platform, go there and climb up towards the top, you will see a blue door that will open for you. Walk through that door and straight ahead there will be another door with a button to push
Just do it. It will blow your ****ing mind.

I didn't read it, but apparently, a story arch, a whole area, several cutscenes and the final level/boss were cut. This isn't something that might have been a cool section, it's the ending...
/* actually they just were unfinished, but the game should have been delayed if THE LAST LEVEL WASN'T DONE.
What now? They revealed it themselves in the fvcking Blu Ray that comes with the CE, so it probably means they have no plans to insert it through a patch or DLC (dealing with Konami here), especially with Kojima gone.
I guess those comments from reviewers saying the ending didn't feel very complete are explained now. And from what I've heard, this cut ending was much better than the original.
What a shitty decision. I would have waited another few months if it meant the game would actually have its proper ending.

It only get's repetitive when you're doing the side ops as many of them are the same but in different locations. However that's really nitpicking as some of the side missions actually feel like story mode gameplay and as you progress through the game you have to adapt. I'm currently taking down Air Radar systems so my helicopter can come in and provide me with air support as I'm dealing with a huge number of soldiers. (Probably 3 times the amount that I had 5/6 missions ago).

Gameplay wise I really enjoyed it, but after Chapter 1 it started to become very repetitive having to replay earlier missions and the story feels disjointed and incomplete from then on. There's parts of it that are REALLY good (like the later parts inside Mother Base) but it feels like there was quite a bit cut out at the end after Konami told them they had to release it NOW after spending a reported $80 million on the game. FOB seem like an unnecessary add-on in order to force micro-transactions into the game too.
Hopefully MGO is OK since I think the game will be very enjoyable in a PvP environment.

I think this game proves that maybe Kojima needs a lot more work or at least needs to learn a lot more when it comes to open world? After playing it for a while, I've come to realize that everything is the same, from the outpost to the rhythm/routine of the game (?). One think I liked is that when they noticed the jeep they were expecting to arrive never did arrive because I took it out on its way to the base I was heading to. It would've been great if you attack one of their outposts and they send out a warning ASAP to the closest outpost/base & have them ready -- this mechanic should potentially force you to pass up on attacking an outpost or at least have you thinking twice before you attack, because for me I always wipe out an outpost to get more resources or a valuable soldier. & these soldiers don't seem to think they're at war, I never see convoys, soldiers marching down the road, any usual war stuff.
I like the stealth system, but I swear, Kojima needs to stop making them blind. It's so clear that I'm wearing a green camo on a sandy scenery and Snake's caucasian ass face & they still couldn't figure out who's snooping around the sand/grass. I do have my moment of happiness though when I pull off epic chains of moves, but when you're right close to the guy & he doesn't realize it's a person lying on the ground, that's when it trips me out. Different case if he had the camo from MGS4.
Normal soldiers aren't threats.
Yeah, it is repetitive, but I'll finish this for the story. Kojima, come back and do another game. :(

Mechanically, it's the best game I've ever played. I actually enjoyed the narrative up until chapter 46, which is when things get VERY weird. I'm not sure if I like it yet.
The biggest bummer is the cut content. It leaves a plot point completely unresolved. I wasn't overly interested in that particular sub plot, but it is pretty important and should have been in the game.

I love The Witcher 3, but MGS V is better imo. Witcher has a better written story and better side content, but MGS V has FAR superior gameplay. It's the greatest stealth game of all time. It also performs much, much better. It runs at a locked 60 fps, while Witcher 3 struggles to stay at 30 fps, and dips into the mid to low 20's in certain scenarios. That makes a difference to me. MGS has better production values in general (less glitches, better cutscenes, cinematography, etc).
I also prefer the stealth genre over fantasy RPG.
Not that the Witcher 3 isn't a great ****ing game. It will easily finish as my #2 game of the year.

As for the story, it was aight. Chapter 1 was really good, Chapter 2 was weak (not as bad when doing side ops instead of the repeated missions). As an MGS game, I'm a little frustrated with the amount of plot holes and cut content, but when stood up against your average game, it's one of the most fun gaming experiences I've had.

Ah, that would explain it.
Overall, at this early point, my thoughts are this game is pretty damn awesome. Graphics are incredible. Very, VERY different than previous MGS games though. It's fun to sneak around but much easier to be spotted now, especially if you haven't binocular-marked every single enemy. Also, I want to listen to the Ocelot briefing tapes, but it's a bit hard to play the tapes and pay attention while moving around, and I don't want to sit in place for 10 minutes while listening to backstory. I don't know. I wouldn't really compare the two. MGS V's ending is just so anti-climatic. Every MGS ends with an epic boss fight that concludes the story. You can feel the build-up and tension leading up to the big payoff. MGS ends with some mission replays, and then suddenly, a "twist" that a lot of people saw coming (unlike MGS 2, which was completely unexpected and not really seen before) and then the game's over? Fvcking weird.
The optimist in me says Kojima tapped in to his crazy side in a massive way for this project and gave the fans their own "phantom pain". Feeling like there's something missing that should be there. What else would explain them putting the cut ending on a Blu Ray in the Collector's Edition? That's literally asking for backlash and uproar from the fans. Surely they're not that stupid?
I still enjoyed TPP a whole lot. Lots of fun to play, but there was a lot of filler stuff there, a lot of missing content, and a pretty anti-climatic ending that didn't tie the whole series together like it was supposed to at all. As well, there was hardly anything in the whole game that wasn't shown in the trailers. Most, if not all, cutscenes, I was thinking "I saw that in the trailer".
MGS 2 was controversial, MGS V is an unfinished product with a messy story.
This is my favourite review of the game out of everything I've watched. Doesn't hate on the game because "EVERYTHING SUCKED WOAT GAME" and doesn't eat everything up like a fanboy, but puts out his points in a reasonable, logical manner.

This is my favourite review of the game out of everything I've watched. Doesn't hate on the game because "EVERYTHING SUCKED WOAT GAME" and doesn't eat everything up like a fanboy, but puts out his points in a reasonable, logical manner.

Basically sums up what I think. Kind of opened my eyes a little actually.
Spoilers in white:
The game is about the emptiness of revenge. Miller tells you at the beginning of the game that Diamond Dogs exist solely to get revenge on Skull Face and XOF. So you build up this army, and you finally kill Skull Face (actually Huey does, you just shoot off his limbs)...but it's at this point that Diamond Dogs basically loses it's purpose. Miller and Venom Snake don't gain anything from it. Yeah, Skull Face was a threat because of his vocal cord parasites and warped plan to sell nukes to everybody as deterrence. But killing him did nothing for Miller and Snake in terms of personal fulfillment. It didn't bring back any of the dead from 9 years ago. As a result, Miller starts looking for "phantoms"...threats that aren't really there. He tells the men that Cipher planted spies, but there are no spies, except for Quiet, who had a change of heart and is no longer a threat.
The game also deals with Big Boss's turn to villainy, just not in the way anybody expected. He goes along with Zero's plan to turn the medic into his doppelganger. He uses and manipulates you, the player. You go through the game thinking you're Big Boss, but you're actually just a pawn being used to take the heat off the real BB. He uses you as a means to an end, similarly to how the US government used the Boss in MGS 3.
I understand why some people are disappointed, and it is horse shit that they cut mission 51. But personally, I enjoyed the story as a whole.

Spoilers in white:
I like how Kojima handled the turn. It was unexpected in that we all expected Boss to go "nuclear", but the twist itself wasn't unexpected, which is the thing. I liked that story point, but the execution was crap. No build-up, no big payoff, just another mission replay, and credits. I knew Mission 46 was the final story mission beforehand, so it wasn't as abrupt an ending as I say it was, but once I thought over it, I was wondering how the fvck they got away with that. It's so out of no where and absurd, especially when you compared it to the endings of other MGS games.
I really think I'd love the story a whole lot more if we even got the one Mission 51. Without it, Chapter 2 is complete horseshit that is incredibly lazy on the part of KojiPro/Konami. Still is horseshit with Mission 51. Still leaves a lot of strings untied.
I just think that the ending could have been much more impactful. As well, most missions in this game have no purpose but to extend the life of the game. Look at older MGS games. Everything you did had purpose. Most of this game is filled with "go here, extract this guy/blow this thing up, exfiltrate hot zone". I blame that on the TV-like episodic format of the game. Did more to hurt the game than help. Still, I much preferred Peace Walker's execution of that format.
Another thing completely gone is the boss fights. The only thing we got resembling a boss fight was the rock man bullet sponge fight which I found really uninspiring. What happened to those? Big crazy boss fights are MGS tradition, and we got ONE measly boss in the middle of the game?
And don't get me started on Mother Base. It looked so much more lively in the trailers, with soldiers driving in cars (more cut content I guess) and things to do, but it's as barebones as you can get here. Mother Base is just a huge ass shower room.
It really doesn't feel like an MGS game to me. I enjoyed it a lot as a game, but as an MGS game, it's just disappointing. Pre-release I thought it could have been the greatest yet, but after, it's really not. MGS 3 still reigns supreme, and has 10x better writing than The Phantom Story.
3 > 1 > 2 > PW > V: TPP > 4 (it's close between TPP and 4)
The more and more I talk about this game, the more and more flaws I see.

In terms of gameplay, TPP is GOAT. Can't say enough about how great the stealth is in this game.

And one last complaint in regards to the twist (spoilers in white):
How the **** is some random MSF Medic who's been in a coma for nine years as good as Big Boss (and probably Solid Snake too)? He shouldn't have been able to defeat Sahelanthropus (twice if you include cut boss)...
Ah whatever, it's a game.

I've only played 2 and 3 before TPP. I'd rank them:
V > 2 = 3
Can't decide between 2 and 3. MGS 2 definitely has my favorite story in the series, but the top down stealth gameplay is a bit archaic (but still charming in it's own way).
I know V is pretty controversial among hardcore MGS fans, but I would put it in my top 5 all time. I'm a big fan of stealth games, and TPP is just pure perfection in terms of stealth gameplay.
Absolutely loved Kiefer's performance too. I wish we could get another game with him.

Big Boss says the medic was his best soldier, so he wasn't just any random dude. They give him all of Big Boss' memories through hypnosis while he's in a coma, so he shares Big Boss' experience (just like the player).
Also, how does rookie Raiden take out 20 ****ing Metal Gears in MGS 2? As you said, because video games.
I will say the story isn't anywhere near as good as MGS 2...I can't believe that shit came out in 2001. The last act was unlike anything I've seen in any game, movie, or TV show.

You need to get on 1 and then 4 asap, just for the experience of the story 1st hand. Are you guys playing MGO?

Yeah, I have. Very mediocre. Not something I want to play much of, which I was originally planning to do.

Well, it is a product of its time. Can't really compare it to today's gameplay.
I agree with you on your last two paragraphs. Not that V is top 5 all-time, but that stealth gameplay is pure bliss. So much replayibility.
The complaints about Kiefer were always overblown. Enjoyed him in Ground Zeroes, LOVED him in The Phantom Pain. He is hundred percent Big Boss to me now. David Hayter is still Solid Snake, always, but he never should have been Boss in the first place, but whatever.
Kiefer was a great choice by Kojima. Sounded very menacing, sounded like a veteran leader. If they ever do an MG 1 and 2 remake on the Fox Engine, I want him back.

Yeah I guess that's fair, but it just sounds weird to me that (white) some "medic" with no real backstory is actually a stealth master who saves the world from nuclear destruction. He may have been Boss' best soldier, but he's still just an MSF medic. Raiden had been handpicked and trained by the "perfect clone" of Big Boss since he was a child and still ended up losing vs. those Metal Gears.
Whatever, vidya gaymes.
At first, I didn't love MGS 2 that much. Now, it's quickly rising up my list. I've started to warm up to it's crazy campy bosses and convoluted story after a few months since I played it.

I'll be back to finish off the storymode. It's been 2 weeks, I think. #ForSnake

Does anyone else think the online mode is pretty mediocre? Doesn't really matter since the single player is excellent but I'm pretty underwhelmed.

It's reeeally bland. Couldn't play it for more than a day.

Just got the FOB missions. Is there any point to this? I get that I can steal another person's soldiers but... sneaking around the base isn't that fun. Too much line of sight for enemy soldiers and repetition in the level.

No. In fact, I would play offline so I didn't get invaded.

Good to know.
Just beat Ep. 30 and started Chapter II.
They really gonna make me re-play all the Chapter I missions? Seriously? Seems like a BS way to extend the game's length.
Also does anyone ever play as a character other than Big Boss, I don't see the point?
Make sure you do this if you're interested in the story:
- do the side ops where you rescue former motherbase soldiers
- develop medical platform
- After building the medical platform, go there and climb up towards the top, you will see a blue door that will open for you. Walk through that door and straight ahead there will be another door with a button to push
Just do it. It will blow your ****ing mind.
Oh shit, I don't think I did the medical platform thing? Is it too late now?
Anyway, this game, as stated earlier, probably has GOAT mechanics. But some of the issues (enemies are blind to snake when he's prone, repetition, having to re-play old missions... seriously? do I seriously need to replay all those old missions on higher difficulty?) prevent it from being a 10/10.
Also I have no idea what the hell is going on in the story.

You don't have to do the replays. Totally optional.
And no, I don't think it's too late to do the thing on the medical platform. It's connected to the wandering motherbase soliders side ops.

do side ops instead of replays, story will still continue
