I'm 34, and a sports nut, and Westbrook is flat-out, one of the greatest athletes, competitors, and gamers I've ever seen in any sport...ever :applause:
I hope he stays healthy for his career, as we are watching something very special. I think he's the most athletic guard ever already, and his game will only improve. A great example why the NBA is, IMO, the greatest sports league on earth.

I am tempted buy into your cynicism, but GSW better hope that they don't face a healthy OKC in the playoffs, and I hate OKC with a passion. Apologies, if you are referring to the mVP race, as I'm intoxicated.

I saw a thread where a few posters thought he was comparable to '89 Jordan now because of these triple doubles. Like c'mon now.
Great performance (against the Sixers), and definitely one of the best athletes today, but lets not get carried away.

No man. MJ is GOAT for me, I didn't rank him in GOAT terms; just acknowledging his season and especially this recent stretch. I can't stand OKC, but I'm just appreciating basketball at an insanely high level.

Yeah he is special no doubt about it, but really what will he look like in 4-5 years when his athleticism fades? His athleticism is vital to his game, so he's really not the type who's game will age well.

As a raw athlete that guy is at least as athletic as Westbrook minus weight training of course.
Jordan is a better athlete than both of them.
If size counts for athleticism (which in my opinion it absolutely does because the greater your size and strength the more easily things in the game of basketball come to you athletically) even guys like Kobe and Wade. Does T-mac count as guard? How bout for sheer size and strength Oscar Robertson and Magic Johnson, both 220+lbs able to post up power forwards without ever touching a weight room.
Also guys like AI, pre injury Rose... I mean, there's so many great athletes past and present at the PG spot. Westbrook is a great athlete no doubt, but depending on your criteria of athleticism he's not the greatest ever guard, nor is he necessarily once in a lifetime, as many guys will recall players like David Thompson, Michael Jordan, etc who were visibly as good or better athletes.

This would be one of the plays of the year for Westbrook (assuming he could do it, which he can't)
Standard procedure for Jordan though.

Also, the stats show that Westbrook only gets about 50 dunks a season, which is a THIRD as many as prime MJ used to get (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=352399).
The best wing athletes are the tier of wings who routinely get over 100 dunks per season (MJ, Dominique, Dr. J, Wade, Lebron).

Eh he's becoming overrated now with this run. The fact of the matter is...he's extremely streaky. In january he averaged 21 points on a pathetic 20 shots...an entire month needing to take 20 shots to average 21 points. Then in february this past month he averaged 31 points on 22 shots. That's a huge difference...
In these four games that he's had a triple double...he's averaging 37 points on 30 shots. That isn't exactly impressive. I honestly don't believe a team will win anything if he is their best player and first option. He's just too streaky. He also has a lot of trouble coexisting as a 2nd option. I'm positive that he'd be his happiest in a Jerry Stackhouse 2001 Pistons situation...where he could shoot 30 times a game, every game.

Not necessarily disagreeing CavsTHW, but I've never seen a player (watching since early 90s), that looks as strong, as fast, and explosive for his relative size as Westbrook.
It's alright fellas, there are great players here right now, and it doesn't diminish past greats. :applause:

even if you choose to ignore the stats showing that Jordan dunked literally 3 times as often, we have proof that westbrook is an inferior athlete to MJ:
Westbrook can't dunk from the FT line, whereas Jordan did it with ease... /end thread
So for people to look back now and say "Westbrook can **** with MJ" is sheer recency bias, plain and simple.
MJ was bigger, stronger, more powerful, with WAY more hops.. any other assessment is simply a delusion and wishful thinking.

Westbrook is most certainly NOT a better athlete than Jordan, but in CERTAIN athletic areas (mostly straight line acceleration), he is his equal and perhaps even slightly better. But as a leaper - both in terms of versatility of leaping (one foot, two foot, hop step etc.) and elevation - and in terms of body control, first step, and strength, he is well below Jordan.

Watching him and Harden go this year kind of makes me wish the 'young guns' edition of the Thunder never existed. All this talent pretty much wasted for a playoff treadmill team that got dismantled in the finals.
If WB, Harden and Durant had been on different teams from the start I feel like the NBA's star power would have shone much more brightly over the past 5 seasons or so.
Hard to imagine WB will go back to second option when KD returns but I guess it makes sense given he's a bit of a chucker and the Thunder haven't been THAT great this year.
Obviously Thunder fans will disagree but I think either KD or WB going to a big market next year would do wonders for the league and for both players.
