I'm a Canadian and grew up with metric, but as a structural engineer, I actually prefer the Imperial system for most things. The loadings are simple even numbers like 15 and 50 psf; inches is easier to picture than mm as well obviously. Your german invented temperature scale is dumb as shit though and needs to change to celsius.

Because it's too damn expensive to change EVERY road sign from English to metric. Then you have the problem of cars primarily showing MPH instead of KM, making the overall average quality of driving worse. Not the most sound idea. Murica too far deep to go back.

For stuff like food products and what not, the change is not as bad. Infrastructure is too damn difficult to change though.

no doubt......water freezes at 0 degrees celcius, much easier then the fahrenheit scale.........and 1000 meters is 1 kilometer, also easier then miles system..........then we have time, 24 hour clock is also better then 12 hour clock, too many misunderstandings can happen.......also why US military uses the 24 hour clock..........why has it not changed in the US, it would make things easier in the long run ..........:confusedshrug:

I think of it as learning a new language. It just makes it easier if everybody can communicate without having to translate everything. If every country in the world spoke French except us, it might be time to consider learning French and relying on it more.

how so? no one really has problems with distance. big distance is miles. medium feet. small inches

for temperature, 100 Fahrenheit is really f-ing hot and 0 is really cold

don't get me wrong, we could adjust but it really makes no difference either way. as long as all scientists and engineers are using metric, joe schmoe measuring it in other units in everyday life doesn't really make a diff

even the brits don't fully use metric in everyday life. they use some weird combo of imperial and metric. ppl just use what they're used to

They tried to switch us over years ago. Didn't take.

However, parts of the metric system are intertwined in our culture. Bottles of soda are in liters. They have 5k or 10k runs. The nutritional labels are in grams...like 10 grams of fat. Olympic races are in meters obviously.

It probably didn't take in America because conservatives thought it was a liberal, communist, socialist plot or something....

How would it take hundreds of millions of dollars? It's not like they need to do studies and research how to convert between the two systems- it is already known, and like I said before, 3rd graders are capable of doing it.

It isn't like it isn't already prevalent in the USA, for example most gyms have the weight in kg listed next to the weight in pounds

Across the entire united states, paying for materials and paying people to make these changes would cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

And for what? So we can be more like the rest of the world? Pretty pointless reason for my taxes to be speant on conforming.

For the sake of rationality, it is an one-time effort. several hundred millions of dollars (lets assume that would be the cost) is nothing compared to the military budget of the U.S. Not to mention the U.S. is already loosing money for not converting to the metric system.

KNOW1EDGE

Are you under the impression that road signs are extremely expensive?

You obviously underestimate the amount of road signs in the United states that would have to be changed. Easily a million, at maybe $10 a piece and gotta pay someone $10 to take the old one down and put the new ones up. There's atleast 20 million on road signs.

Then how many books do we have to change?
How many companies have to rehaul their whole systems.

If you actually put some thought into it, it's extremely obvious that it would cost hundreds of millions of dollars and is completely pointless.

Most ISH posters don't bother to actually think about it, or they can't grasp the concept and enormous amount of money it would cost

Last time I checked all speed limits in England are still in miles per hour and distances are in miles.

USA is 100% imperial. Australia is 100% metric. England uses both. Which country sounds the most ****ed and confusing? England.

Metric system is the best though and USA should switch over.
