Nostalgia sells. Why do you think Stern gave us Lakers-Celtics roughly 20 years after the magic bird rivalry, and then Derrick Rose a MVP he clearly didn't deserve, ~20 years after the rise of MJ? The kids of those days now had kids of their own, so it was important to reach out to a new market.

Look at artists sampling old stuff, big budget movies being made out of comic books and cartoons like the avengers and transformers. Nostalgia sells.
