1994 Bulls: A Story of How the Greatest Team Ever Was Once 2nd Round Losers

CLIFFS: The Bulls' drop-off in 1994 is one of the biggest drop-offs of all time - they went from being the greatest team since the 60's Celtics, to an ordinary 2nd round exit team.

The 1994 Bulls were down 2-0 to the Knicks in the 2nd Round, and about to be down 3-0, before Kukoc hit one of those Ray Allen face-saver miracles with 1.7 left to turn the series around.. This was the same game Pippen famously pouted on the bench and watched while Kukoc saved the day.. Then two games later in Game 5, Pippen chokes again by fouling Hubert Davis, a rookie mistake.

Of course, just 4 years earlier in 1990, Pippen famously choked in Game 7 of ECF and cost the Bulls a trip to the Finals - he actually admitted to this (http://www.insidehoops.com/forum/showthread.php?t=367910), saying "Maybe it was the pressure.. As the pressure grew, the pounding (in his head) grew".

Fast forward 7 years to the 1997 Finals, when Pippen let Jordan make every single clutch play in that series to ensure victory (walk-off GW in Game 1, Flu Game and GW in Game 5, GW assist to Kerr in Game 6)... Then in 1998, he disappears late in the series, forcing Jordan to take 27 shots per game, score a Finals record 38% of his team's points, and carry the Bulls with GOAT clutch play.

No wonder the Bulls dropped off so severly and were lost without Jordan in 1994 - Pippen proved to be an unreliable, inept #1 option in the playoffs.. And regarding his #2 status alongside Jordan, he's easily a worse number 2 than the Magic/Kareem Lakers, Shaq/Kobe Lakers, Wade/Shaq Heat, Wade/Lebron Heat.

And why is this shocking? Up until that point Pippen was cemented in his role of being the 2nd option. In fact, he played the role so perfectly that it resulted in a 3 peat. Then in 94 he's asked to be a #1 option? It takes time to transition. All things considered, Pippen did better in 94 than anyone else in his position could or would ever do, period.
