NBA teams using internal data are projecting the salary cap to jump to between $88-92 million per team, sources told ESPN. To compare, this season the cap is set at $63 million

There's a pretty good chance we see another lockout in 2017 :banghead:

The league is is big trouble when this happens. Mid-tier players are going to be so overpaid it will be comical. When you are paying non all star players 16-18 Mil things will be so out of hand. Agents and strippers are ready though...

That sets LeBron up to earn $30.8-32.2 million/year on a max deal when he re-signs, right? (not sure if my math/percentages for a max deal are right). Goddamn, too much ****ing money.

This will mess up both the 2015 and 2016 free agency periods.

Noone will want top sign a longterm deal in 2015, because it would be for so much less money than they could get a year latter. That means players will mostly be staying put, or maybe signing 1-year extensions.

Meanwhile in 2016 almost every team in the league will have capspace, and every free agent will be looking for a massive payday.

And Chandler Parsons will get 20 million instead of 14

In case of a lockout could the NBA ever just have replacement teams play? The "scabs" of professional sports. I really don't like the players having so much power. I think unions are good in general but not for workers getting paid in the range of 4 million a year to 30 million.

Yeah, Lebron is set to sign the biggest contract in history, which is quite amazing when you consider that Kobe set the current record with a 7-year deal, which Lebron will be breaking with a 5-year deal.

If my estimate was correct it's guaranteed that he'll be signing the largest contract in history across all major professional sports as far as AAV (discounting racing/boxing, not a great comparison). Clayton Kershaw is currently #1, making $30.7 million/year, even if the cap only goes to $88 million LeBron is locked onto top spot.

I'm amazed that basketball salaries will be trumping baseball's.

Owners issue...

If they cannot control their spending...there is no one else to blame but themselves.

If there are teams willing the put big money down on a mid tier player... Let them. when other teams are capped out, then you can go in with a fair offer.

I do hope they take away the mid level exception with the new increased salary cap because it doesn't make sense

I think the NBA would tarnish it's own legacy a bit if they ran a full season with replacement players.

Imagine Philly winning the championship in 2017 because they happened to field the best team of Euroleague / D-League players? It wouldn't be officially recognized by the fans and would be a big waste of time and money.

How old will Lebron be when the new cap hits? 32?

That means you're signing Lebron for 5 years on a max deal to be the best player on your team up until he turns 37. Just don't see it.

Harden on the other hand is gonna get paid the max, he's well worth it.

Until he gets hurt...

Guaranteed contract is gonna be a huge issue in the league. Too many players will not play even if they get a bruise.

Players not willing to go on minor injuries are increasing and the league are paying these guys a premium. Take the guaranteed contracts away and get these guys workin a little harder. If they deserve more, let a arbitration system in there that works both ways.

The players get ~50% of basketball related income (TV deals, merchandise rights, ticket revenue, etc).

Two CBAs ago that % was 67%. Last CBA it was 59%.

Players are overpaid now

:facepalm  :facepalm

You can't compare what they get paid now to what they'll be paid with a higher cap

you can't say xyz the role player will be overpaid at such and such amount..

the cap is rising, so that new contract will be basically right along lines percentage wise as it was percentage wise with a lower cap... the biggest difference is you'll have a span of two to three years where you have a glut of players on old cap contracts being underpaid compared to what the new contracts are bringing in

besides even if the owners were to say no we're not paying that much to the players it doesn't matter because the players are guaranteed 50% of the money... either way the same amount goes out to the players as a whole in the end and the owners as a whole spend the same amount

plus the minimum will go up too, teams now that won't go over the cap will be spending a hell of a lot more.. you have to spend it sooner or latter, may as well spend it on putting a good team on the floor

LOL wut!? Teams would kill to have LeBron. Just the revenue he brings would be MASSIVE. Also, he's gonna put up 25+/5+/6+ for the next 4-5 years at the least.

This is great for the players, coaches, and owners, but TERRIBLE for the fans. Trust me, because of this huge increase, you're likely going to see many mediocre players sign ridiculously overpaid contracts (example:$40m/4 years for a 7th or 8th man on an average team) and then totally drop the ball until the final year of the contract.

That said, the quality of play will likely decrease drastically.

It shouldn't be that surprising, NBA rosters have half the players of an MLB roster and Kershaw only plays once every 5 games.

The players are going to be making the same percentage of revenue has they did this year...
