I hope everyone goes out and has a fun (and safe) celebration in their city for St. Patrick's Day.
But seriously is this a strictly NE US tradition or do other cities around the country go crazy for this?

In Suffolk County (Boston) we have something called Evacuation Day. It celebrates the British leaving Boston during the Revolutionary War. It just so happens that apparently all the British soldiers left on March 17th. An amazing coincidence.
And that's the difference between how seriously this holiday is taken between Boston and the rest of the country.

That's actually way cooler. At least there is historical context to the celebration in that case. I'd love to get up to Boston one year for the holiday. From everything I hear Boston, Chicago, and Pittsburgh have the best celebrations.
I think Pitt is second only to Boston in terms of % of population with Irish ancestry.

The partying got so destructive here over the years that Penn State decided to always make St. Patty's during Spring Break. Of course, they made their own holiday (State Patty's Day) two weeks earlier, which is way worse than anything that existed before.

The parade in New York is older than the United States itself. But's it's always on the day of, so this thread surprised me.

I used to hate this day as a kid. It seemed like it was made for the adults. Plus I never used to wear green, so my family would run around pinching the f*ck outta me.

I like it much better now that I'm past drinking age. :pimp:

It's undergrad hell if you're an adult. We had kids across the street throwing their recycling and trash bins into the street hoping cars would hit them as they drove by.

What? I thought it was on Tuesday. Btw, it's St. Paddy's Day, not f*cking St. Krabby "Patty".
I think some places in the US celebrate St. Patrick's Day better than most places here in Ireland. I know where I live, a pretty big city in the country, the celebrations are definitely not as big as some in the US. The getting drunk part is a different story though.

I had never heard of people actually celebrating (read: getting drunk on) St. Patrick's day before this thread.

All the bars have the usual St. Patrick's day stuff, but I'm not aware of any huge celebrations or anything. I choose to pass. St. Patty's day, much like New Years eve, is "amateur hour" at it's finest.
