View Full Version : Greatest sidekick of all time: Pippen vs Kobe

Who ya got?
For me, it's Kobe hands down. Pippen was more like a 1b option rather than a true 2nd option.
But yeah, Kobe Bryant is the GOAT 2nd option, 3-peat and lack of FMVP proved that.

I would go with kobe. Was the second option of 2 very succesful duos with 1st options, shaq and gasol. His ego did cost them some games tho. :facepalm

Both better than Bron in 2011. Flash deserved better than that.
During his legendary 8 point game in the finals, Wade had to alpha the shit out of him (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emXNsKw7a3w)... still didn't work.
But hey at least he played his sidekick role to a tee during Kyrie's ATG performance the other night :applause:

I would say Pippen is more of a 1b than a true sidekick.
If you look up sidekick in the dictionary it says "Scottie Pippen". That's no knock on him, he was a great player, but he was the consummate sidekick. Great floor game, defense, and intangibles, and he knew how to play his role perfectly. Kobe was much closer to a 1b than Pippen. 1a and 1b refers to scoring and Kobe was obviously the better scorer, but I think Pippen was a better overall sidekick.

Kobe 2000 vs pippens career? Pip easily. Pip could complement any....any, player. Can't really say that with Kobe.

Was going to make this exact point.
Pippen's all around game made him a legit 1st option type of player, he just happened to be paired up with MJ. Without MJ, Pippen still won 50+ and a playoff series.
Kobe is more of a true sidekick, in that he cannot lead a team anywhere as "the guy" but was a secondary contributor on a number of success teams.
Kobe > Pippen as a sidekick
Pippen > Kobe overall

Magic won Finals MVP his rookie season with one of the greatest performances in Sports History when Kareem went down and was out. Kareem was a shell of himself when Magic was leading them to championships/finals in the late 80s. And he won MVP and led the team to the finals after Kareem left. Then his career was cut short for obvious reasons.
Magic was the best player on the Lakers when Kareem was on the squad and when he wasn't... Bean was only the man when Shaq promoted him from intern.

What point are you trying to make exactly? And for the record, Magic did in fact win Finals MVP his rookie season playing alongside a Kareem coming off an MVP regular season. Saved the Lakers when Cap went down and it looked like they were finished.
But Bean winning the dunk contest is just as impressive.

But he didn't win because he went out with an injury and a rookie played all 5 positions (starting at center) and closed out the series when everyone had counted them out after they lost the regular season MVP.

Kareen was going to win Finals MVP even after Magic's Epic Game 6. The Voters picked Magic because Kareem wasn't at the Arena (he stayed behind after Game 5). They didn't want to give the award to an empty chair so Magic got it. Had Kareem just traveled with the Team and attended the Game he would've gotten the Finals MVP.

Because the original post I replied to claimed Magic was a sidekick for all of his 5 rings. I simply pointed out that Magic won 3 MVPs and 3 Finals MVPs with Kareem as a teammate while Kobe only won a dunk contest with Shaq as his. Sucks for Kobe that he played with a peak/past peak Shaq and was always the second fiddle and won no significant individual awards. But like I already pointed out, Magic won finals MVP in his rookie season when Kareem was coming off a regular season MVP... which still trumps Bean's dunk contest win... but only by a smidge :lol

Even if it's true (not saying it's not), has anyone besides Bill Livingston come forward with anything tangible? How does a TV broadcaster 'coerce' a journalist to change an MVP vote? Again, not saying it isn't true or that Kareem wasn't MVP worthy, obviously he was... Just sounds like a 9/11 trutheresque conspiracy to me.
But maybe I just need to do more research on the matter.

I ignored that post for obvious reasons. But you didn't "simply point it out", come on now lol. You were clearly taking a shot at Kobe not racking up the hardware during his time with Shaq. While intentionally leaving out the fact that the majority of Magic's awards with Kareem came when Kareem was in his mid-30s to early 40s, and Kobe's time with Shaq came during Shaq's prime/peak. No one is disputing that Magic's game 6 was legendary...but I just think it's pretty amusing how you're willing to bring up that game, and then on the other hand sum up Kobe's time with Shaq with that dunk contest joke :oldlol:

You realize the Pistons/Bulls rivalry was before Pippen really reached stardom right? As I pointed out before...Bill is basically saying you can't win championships with just one star...and the Bulls didn't. Pippen developed and became a star. What Laimbeer has to say here is irrevelent because the only season you could legitimately call Pippen a star during their rivalry was 91. (and the pistons were raped)
Now stop being such a stupid bastard.
