View Full Version : Oklahoma banning atheists from getting married *article*

It's been a good month for completely absurd law changes. Last week, Ireland quite suddenly legalised ecstasy and ketamine, and this week Oklahoma has seen fit to restrict marriage to people of faith.
A bill that would restrict the right to marry to people of faith and require all marriage licenses to be approved by a member of clergy was approved by the Oklahoma state House on Tuuesday.
House Bill 1125, which would effectively ban all secular marriages in the state, was passed by a Republican majority and will now go to the state Senate for consideration.
"Marriage was not instituted by government. It was instituted by God. There is no reason for Oklahoma or any state to be involved in marriage," said one of the bill's Republican supporters Rep. Dennis Johnson, though marriage is a legal contract.
I'm actually inclined to agree with him despite being an atheist myself. Marriage is interwoven with religion and I'd sooner see secular people reject it and come up with their own commitments, though admittedly I'd rather we came to that realisation naturally than where forced into it by Republicans.
It seems this bill isn't fuelled by a desire to segregate atheists however but is a thinly-veiled attack on gay marriage. By restricting the issuing of marriage licenses to the clergy and not judges and court clerks, the bill would make it harder for same-sex marriages to take place.
Oklahomans for Equality described the proposal as an "all-out assault on the LGBT citizens of Oklahoma."

State senate will likely not pass this, if they do than **** those mouth breathers.
I knew that area was ****ed up when I saw on National Television that they say group prayers before every game at OKC arena, most awkward shit I've ever seen. 20 some thousand people all saying a prayer together. I'll never move to Oklahoma.

It's pretty tight to piss off the believers though.
the other day at the Bulls game some old lady confronted me because I was talking during the prayer. I told her I don't believe in God and to mind her ****ing business. Almost duked it out with her husband. :pimp:
But you have to be tough to make it in Oklahoma. We breed athletes. Unfortunately your awkward and uncoordinated ass wouldn't cut it. :oldlol:

You're mistaking breeding for inbreeding.

Forget separation of church and state, this is state being fully dependent on church. :facepalm

Though I don't agree with the ruling I see their point. Marriage is a religious institution. If you don't believe in God/religion, why do you want to get married?

Marriage has been around before Christians adopted it you know. Originally, "Marriage" was just a contract between two families, usually involving trading of land or goods/services for the spouse's "name."

Well, there are legal ramifications, including taxes. It would be one thing if a church doesn't acknowledge the marriage between two non-religious people, but the problem is when the church is required for legal issues.

The institution of marriage is such a joke. While atheists are scum in all sense of the word, who wants to deal with the repercussions of marriage??

Who cares what the angle is? Everyone should be allowed the same legal protections of said institution. If that's the only way the God-thumpers will let it go, so be it.

Because the word "Originally" means things have changed?
Marriage is far older than the concept of romantic love.

Since when do religious people have to follow all religious beliefs? That's called fanaticism. You don't get out much do you?

Find me an atheist who doesn't go out of his way to make his non-belief known, and doesn't go out of his way to discredit believers, and I'll show you an honest man.
Till then, may you all eat shit.

Then you must not be hanging out around a lot of Christians. Being faithful to one partner is something else, and not being married is not an excuse for infidelity.
Let's put it this way, does not wanting to get married make be a bad person?
Does it make me less likeable in the eyes of God?

If marriage is truly a religious institution, why is it part of our government? What happened to separation of church and state?
