View Full Version : When Wilt Chamberlain entered the league in 1960..

.....There were only 4 players taller than 6'8

and 2 of them were Wilt and Russell

The rest of the big guys were NBA small forward size

This means that theoretically someone like Chandler Parsons would be seen as a dominant inside presence (Shaq). Klay Thompson would have been a Center back then.

Proof: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/441840-bill-russell-an-overrated-nba-legend

Also goes into interesting details how Russell would be a non-factor in today's league.

Someone try and defend this.

Assists were left out for some reason. He averaged 4.3 over his career, which is really good for an NBA center. Assists are one stat which wasn't inflated due to pace.

Also, there was no mention of the difference between how the heights of players are measured today (in shoes) and exaggerated vs back then.

Russell at his current age doesn't look short for a center.

And then there is the fact that Russell had a very long standing reach. He was a freak in his own right.

Anyway, there were other HOF centers who entered the league soon after Wilt and Russell.

So let's just grant that articles estimate and say Russell is putting up Mutombo numbers today, plus 4 assists a game, and he has more intangibles.

That leaves off some of his finals performances back then.

There was the 17.8/25/5.8 on 70.2% shooting in the 65 finals. The next year, he went for 23.6/24.3/3.7 on 53.8%. Russell also had a 20/26/5.3 finals in 63.

Those look better than playoff numbers Mutombo would put up. And then you have the fact that Russell was 10-0 in game 7s, and most of them were very close affairs against Wilt, Baylor and West teams. One I believe was against Oscar's team.

And two were against Pettit's Hawks.

These non Wilt, Russell players were in the league in 1960.

Walter Dukes- 7'0"
Ray Felix- 6'11"
Chuck Share- 6'11"
Phil Jordan- 6'10"

On top of that, there were countless players listed at 6'9" in 1960 who would easily be listed at 6'10+ today. If you are going to troll, at least don't make it so easy.

Just got to this.

Thanks Jlip.

Of course that article was a complete joke.

Incidently, the 54-55 Oregon St. Beavers fielded the original "Twin Towers" with 7-0 Phil Shadoin, and 7-3 Swede Halbrook, who still owns Oregon St. rebounding records, including a 35 rebound game, and had high school scoring games of 71. 66, and 57.

Halbrook quit school after his junior season, and played AAU ball for five years, before joining Syracuse in the NBA in the 60-61 season. He was billed as the tallest basketball player in the world up until 1982.

BTW, Bill Russell battled that Oregon St. team in the NCAA tournament that year, and destroyed them.

How about this article...

https://books.google.com/books?id=Ssf7PaArud0C&pg=PA108&lpg=PA108&dq=swede+halbrook+at+oregon+st.&source=bl&ots=o6tMR2eBU6&sig=2A1qRX9wcmhF1ILoZm8kNf0H3KM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=czMOVeOSDYaxyATj_oGwBg&ved=0CFQQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&q=swede%20halbrook%20at%20oregon%20st.&f=false

Interesting reading. Halbrook held the ball as high as he could, and Russell calmly reached out his long arms and placed his hand on top of the basketball.

Continuing...

as he often did Russell began the game with his intimidation tactics. With his warmup suit on, Russell leaped high over the basket, sometimes with his armpits over the rim.

In any case, and as you claimed, the NBA had multiple players 6-11 and over, and within a couple of years the average starting center was 6-10.5...which is about what it is today.

These bashers continue to make complete fools of themselves.

Wilt is actually the GOAT among losers. So these 2/5 stans want to tear him down. :lol

Sorry, Bird only winning one more ring, but in one less Finals makes him the "GOAT loser." Furthermore, in one of his rings, he averaged 15 ppg on a .419 FG%, and didn't even win the FMVP. He also led his teams down in flames in SEVEN series in which they had HCA, most of them with awful performances.

Of course, you could make a case that Kareem was a far greater "loser." In their four years in the league together, Chamberlain had more team success, and held a 3-1 Finals margin. Furthermore, a PRIME Kareem, in his first ten years in the league, only went to two Finals, and only won one ring. Furthermore, he had two teams butchered in the first round, including a 60 win team that lost to a 47 win team. Even more hilarious...he played on two teams that missed the playoffs altogether. Thank god Magic arrived, or Kareem would likely have retired with one ring, and been considered the greatest loser of all-time.

Kobe deserves a mention, as well. No other "GOAT" candidate ever played so poorly in their Finals. Kobe was a sidekick on three of his rings, and did all he could do to lose another one in 2010, with a game seven performance of 6-24 from the field. So, you can remove four rings from his resume. Then, you can claim that Kobe COST his team's two more rings with his horrific shooting in the 2004 and 2008 Finals.

Of course, we all know who the real "GOAT loser" really was. Hakeem, "King of the First Round Exit" Olajuwon...who only played on five teams, in his 18 seasons, that even won 50+ games, with a high of only 58. Furthermore, he won a ring in a season in which MJ took the year off, and another ring the next year, when his teammates murdered Shaq's, in a series in which Shaq outplayed Hakeem. But beyond all of that...EIGHT First Round Exits, most all of them blowout losses, in his 15 post-seasons.

So, next time someone asks you who the "GOAT losers" were...you now have all the info you need. Wilt was nowhere near a "GOAT" loser.

Wilt was a great regular season player, maybe the best, but his pace adjusted playoff and finals stats aren't top 10. Dude was a straight choker, probably the best example there is when it comes to elite players.

If you're good enough to get to the playoffs, regular season stats don't matter at all. Wilt and Russell are the 2 most overrated players on this board, mainly because people just look at the regular season 60s inflated stats and ring counts.
