After Balmer's purchase of the Clippers, the value of NBA franchises has skyrocketed. The majority of MJ's net worth probably is the estimated value of his stake in his team.

Jordan is the most marketable basketball player I think for sure. Shaq with all the endorsements he's done would have to be second. I think Magic, though he was back then as well, would have been extremely marketable if he played today.

I think Jordan is probably the most marketable athlete ever. The only three I can think of close would have been Tiger Woods (before the fall), Babe Ruth, and Muhammad Ali (had the most charisma, but was for sure totally controversial)

All said, looks like Lebron is quietly building something pretty big. I think he'll be the richest one day if he keeps working with guys like Buffett and keeps his goals where they apparently are.
