View Full Version : I developed fear of flying when I turned 21

Short backround:

I flew for the first time when I was 13. I used to enjoy flying up until I was 20. I flew 3 or 4 times a year and I could not wait to get on a plane. In fact, I used to pray I had a connection flight so I can take off twice in the same day. Perfectly calm, sometimes I would sleep until we landed.

Then I turned 21 and I started getting more anxious every time I flew. Now it is so bad, every time I fly is like someone is holding a loaded gun on my head until we land. The feeling of being all the way up in the air on a tube which is being held by two wings in the air with not escape is terrifying.

I tell myself every time I am a man and I would get through this at some point. Therefore, to beat the fear I normally choose flying over going somewhere 2000 km by car. Does not help though, I am still more scared than ever.

I go to the doctor, I tell him about this, he gives me diazepam pills. Then he tells me to take only 1 because they are very strong. I took two on the plane and no effect whatsoever, absolutely 0.

As last resort, in Holland, they do not give you valium so I had some imported from Italy. I thought this valium for sure will eliminate any anxiety I have while flying. Guess what? Valium does not got a thing on me, I could have taken 3 times the amount and still not feel any effect.

Anybody has any idea on what to do to conquer this stupid, childish fear I developed?

Play GTA V and fly in First Person. Crash a couple of times to mimic real flights.

As real as it gets.

It probably has to do something with you losing your testicles

For real tho, i was scared of flying when i was a teenager but since i'm quite a bit into automotive engineering i also decided to learn how planes work and i read a lot about statistics of plane crashes, common failures stuff like that, and ever since i can fully comprehend what exactly is happening i don't feel scared anymore, maybe you should try the same.

Just a take chance, theres a real possibility you could die in a plane crash, a very low chance. But then again whats the point fearing something you cant change? If shit is going to happen it will, regardless of your fear. Gotta tweak your brain around and program it that fear is an irrational and pointless emotion, nothing more.

As a family we moved and traveled a lot due to my dad's job, so we either drove long distances or took flights, and since as a four year old kid flying is much more cooler and exciting I have always loved flying by airplanes. It's the marvel of human tech, you get to your destination amazingly quick and you get to fly over mother****ing clouds.

Well diazepam and valium is the same thing.

You can try sleeping pills. Ambien or something.

Anxiety is a mother****er. I would not think that it's a childish fear.

I didn't enjoy flying ever. I mean, I didn't mind taking off or landing. I don't like general flight, though. I mean, 9/11 happened, plus I have been in some pretty crazy flight situations. Flying thru storms... I dunno. It's weird because you realize the anxiety of people as well as the pilot. They are real people. It's probably pretty hard to outright crash a plane because you are floating thru the air, but there can be a lot of fail, rough riding, etc.

They say it's a small chance, but on my list of deaths falling is the second worst behind some kind of suffocation/being trapped.

If you really want to fly, don't drink caffeine or anything. Just stay chill, take your lumps. i think also the inability to scream is a big issue. haha. I think if you were able to move around or scream it would be better, but you are belted in and nobody is going to take well to you being like ****KKING SHITTTT WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE. Even though that's completely human response to some of the feelings you get while flying.

Thank you all for your replies.

I am flying again in about 2 months. Will obviously take the flight and be scared shitless.:lol

I guess what bothers me is that I had no problems with it as a kid. I freaking loved flying.

I think I should just skydive. Take a plane a jump the **** out of it:lol

Maybe that will cure it

Maybe diving attached to a pro's back, will rid you of this, you just have to learn to appreciate the flight. I could hazard a guess and say you might have difficulty losing control now as an adult.

Well, generally, I am the type of person who tries to be in control of everything.

So, yes, I might feel like I am not in control when sitting in an airplane, but to reach such extreme anxiety and fear because of it?

I'm not a psychologist or anything, more like an enthusiast, your fear of losing control could be one factor not everything. On a related note, I think if you manage to successfully jump out of a plane and land on your feet, you will be definitely fit to stay in it the whole time.
ETA: Another important note is that you should remember that everybody gets scared and anxious sometime on every flight, that includes the captain, the rest of the crew, and the passengers. Every time an abrupt turbulence makes me jump out of my skin, I just look around then feel stupid and laugh at myself then lean back and keep on going about mu business.

It's rare you hear of gypsies flying. The ones that do are usually coming out of a cannon. Doesn't seem like it would be part of your culture. I think you should stick to wearing bright colors and thinking of delightful new ways of seperating tourists from their wallets.

I friggin hate flying. I'd rather bungee jump or take a solid punch than sit on dat plane. I took a domestic flight, that was about 45 mins and I was friggin' tense the whole time. I can't even imagine sitting there for hours.

Prolly has to do with lack of control. I'm a pussay when it comes to flying. :oldlol:

You think the captain is anxious?I have a friend who is a pilot and he gives absolutely no shit about it. He even flies in those small old airplanes with no stress.

I will consider skydiving and maybe I get over the fear.

I cleared it at the end, by saying at some point during the flight, it could last only a moment; you are not the only one who gets anxious on the plane. I hope you get to come to terms with your anxiety though, because flying is fun.

Take comfort in these:

1. You're way more likely to die in a car crash.

2. Dying in a plane crash is probably pretty painless and quick. No pain before the impact and the impact usually does the job.

3. On a plane you at least wouldn't be dying alone. You'd be together with your fellow mankind and possibly friends or family.
